  1. Sounds like a fantastic hunt!!. Kudos on sticking to you self imposed limit. Only you know what you can confidently kill a deer at. I love my grunt call. I have shot quite a few deer I can directly contribute to the use of a grunt call. Not just bucks either. Just this year ,during the early season, I shot a large doe out of a group of 6 and the rest all took off across the field, they paused before stepping into the woods 100 yds away or so. I grunted , and they all turned around walked right back to where they were and voila 2 deer for the freezer.
  2. There is a ton of state land up this way. Not sure about the tug hill area. I have never hunted there. Not sure what the exact #s are ,but the land I hunt In the foothills of the adirondacks has 10-15000 acres ..Besides the chance of getting lost, it is very lightly pressured for the most part. Lots of room to roam .
  3. Gotchya.. So then it is just me. They are some nice deer!...
  4. LOl . You have eyes like mine when I'm hunting. I have stared holes in bushes and trees trying to make them move because they had a helova set of horns. .. Do you mean the one facing away feeding on the bush to the right of the 2 ?
  5. Glad you r ok . I know you have to be careful where you place your weight on some climbers. I have a summit viper. The 1st time I used it last year I was sitting down with my rifle across my lap.I shifted my but around little bit, ... and the next thing I know I am sitting on the foot platform with my gun between my knees and my chest and the upper platform sitting on the lower one..Of coarse this was 30' in the air. Need less to say it sped my heart rate up a little.
  6. Rarely. On the rare occasion that I have an opportunity to try a stalk on a deer, I will knock an arrow.
  7. You forgot the gps coordinates.lol... Beautiful deer!
  8. While I for the most part like what I have seen with AR areas, I would have to agree with what you said here. On a side note , I am leaving the house right now! To set in my tree stand and harvest with my bow the 1st deer that weighs 120# +. Tonight and 2 more days to use up a left over tag from last year.lol
  9. If you do not change your shooting position(anchor ,arm position, etc) ,ime the arrows hit pretty dam close to where you are aiming. It is actually pretty hard to get high enough and far enough away for there to be much difference in trajectory. Bend at the waist. Do not drop your arm or shoulder. Practice from an elevated position to see for your self. I know some people have a difficult time maintaining proper form , and this will change how you shoot.
  10. Not to blatantly advertise but ... give me a shout ..pm would work... We just built a small 2 bedroom 28x40 home. There was under $55,000 in materials for a finished product .cement pad, crawl space ,septic, well ,etc... ready to move in.
  11. Hey don't not do it. Where a harness!! lol. I started wearing a harness last year, if for no other reason than my family's peace of mind.
  12. I lived in the nw corner of CT for a few years ,fresh out of high school.I didn't deer hunt yet though. I remember there being deer everywhere. Yet nobody hunted .Nothing but city people, weekenders, and summer homes galore.... $$$$. I am thinking I should go back and take a new look at the hunting.
  13. Not sure about the back of the hand , but I can remember it feeling like I broke my wrist when they would kick. I do not remember if it was the old M or H but I rarely I got her around the 1st time.lol
  14. Ahh the good ol days.lol .. I remember taking a shower everytime we got a hard rain (esp.. thunderstorms) under the valley on the house .It beat the heck out of sharing the tub with my little brother while mom poured boiling(at least that is how I remember it) water off the cookstove over our heads. We lived on a small 100 acre farm and there was nowhere that we could not hear dad's whistle .When he whistled you best be home in 5 min or less or it wasn't good. Hell, I am 41 years old and I still run 1/2 the time to go get a tool or what ever else I may need to work.Lollygagging wasn't allowed. Starting the old hand crank tractors when I was 12, throwing the bucket down the dug well and pulling it back out..Do you know many gallons 17 horses, 2 cows, and 3 pigs can drink in a day? I cannot remember but it was a lot. Come to think of it I am really spoiling my 8 year old girl.
  15. Shotgun lottery applications are available now. http://nysparks.com/parks/attachments/LetchworthShotgunHuntingInformationApplication-2012.pdf
  16. I was told today ,while on the phone with the park people, that the shotgun permit application would be available Tuesday.
  17. I have an extra 300 win mag barrel for an encore that I just took in trade. It is the 28" fluted ss prohunter barrel. It is used but in good shape. I would like to trade for a 12 (would consider 20?)gauge slug barrel for my encore preferably ss also. Anybody's area just get changed from shotgun to rifle?
  18. I was curious how the new dates were going to work in the park. Post up what you find out Sunday.
  19. I did not grow up with family hunters. Mom and Dad both hunted when they were kids but did not continue the tradition. All of my friends hunted ,and I learned much from them and their fathers over my teen years hunting rabbits and grouse mainly. I had always said when invited to deer hunt or camp that "aaah I cannot shoot one of those cute deer". Sometime in my early 20s one of my friends finally convinced me to go .He gave me a 32 special lever action w/iron sights to use and away we went. After shooting every bullet I had (I think they held 7 shells?)at the 1st deer I saw ......a 90lb doe...... I was hooked.Nobody told me they wouldn't just pile up like a rabbit or bird lol. Perfect D/lung shot but she kept on flopping around .. never cut a hair with the other 6 shots. Now this very good friend and his family are not what we call by today's standards very ethical hunters. Poor , and if they needed meat they shot meat . Soo.. I didn't start out with the best roll models as far as modern hunters ethics or laws go. I have changed over the years to their chagrin to a "horn" hunter and maybe a doe during archery. I like the challenge of trying to target an older or harder to find deer. and my family only eats 2 deer a year. I still probably spend more time wandering around the woods just "scouting" or napping under or in a tree than I do actually seriously hunting .I probably have killed more deer in my blue jeans hiding in the brush..than I kill now with my $100s worth of camo and treestands.but that is what makes it great !!
  20. Any chance for a duel (all in one)class? Seems like ther would be a lot of cross-over between the 2 classes. Only thing I can remember from my archery class was that they hammered into our heads treestand safety. lol
  21. That was a great offer !! I have just passed my old bow off to my brother for his 1st bow hunt this year.
  22. I would agree for the most part...3d comp are great practice too. Another thing I forgot to add.... I now like to practice at 50 yds most of the time . after getting proficient at this it has greatly increased my confidence at hunting ranges. A 20 yd shot seems like a chip shot now..
  23. Practice.Drill it into your head that you can only take broadside double lung shots at 20 yds or less (at least for 1st year on the yardage) bows are NOT guns. Do not begin to track a poorly shot deer for at least 6hrs .Practice in awkward positions. If you are going to shoot sitting down practice sitting down.Do not over-bow yourself.( draw length or poundage).Climb a tree. I have shot a lot of deer with my bow off the ground but it seems like it is 10x as difficult. Make sure your bow is sighted in with your broadheads (an out of tune bow will not hit the same point).Practice ...Lol These are all things that I should have done more of when I 1st started bow hunting. Have fun , and welcome to the best part of hunting !
  24. So true..Advantech or equivalent t&g osb is a great product.
