  1. I have not hunted rabbit in years.. Seems like I am seeing a lot more in the woods though. You r correct. The Indian river lakes are great. We have a camp on yellow lake.I won't tell you how many 20"+ bass I caught In some of them last year.lol. Biggest stringer of bass I have ever seen out of a northern lake came out of Moon.
  2. Broncos vs 49rs. ....35-27.. I have been a 49r since the 80s but I like Peyton Manning . Not sure if the 49rs have the offense ....yet.
  3. That's great.! Always fun to share ones interest with the little ones. My 8 year old daughter is learning this year too....
  4. Hate to say it but there is truth to this..When they changed the rules and started issuing dmps up here deer started disappearing . Bad enough that everyone had 2-3 (their own, their mothers, their sisters etc..)buck tags to use on every 1 1/2 year old buck they see. At the same time the hunting culture up here is changing. In the past a guy could get permission from any # of small farmers to hunt. These smaller farmers are disappearing quickly. Bought up by a few hand fulls of larger farms farming thousands of acres. They for the most part hate deer and they and their help use many destroy permits. More than one has been caught in the past dumping dead deer by the dozens into the farms dump. There is also a trend of paying to hunt. Either by out of the area guys buying up land or leasing it.....With some work private land is still available just harder to find without costing money..
  5. I live 15 minutes south of Ogdensburg. Deer hunting is hit or miss depending on the piece of property. We do not have the deer #s of ten years ago,but there are still plenty to be found. If unpressured state land is what you are looking for there are 10s of thousands of acres within a 15-45 minute drive. I hunt every day I possible can ,including a 10 day trip to Letchworth south of Rochester. For sure my best chances at a mature deer are downstate . Hunting around home I see less people all season than I have seen in one day downstate though..lol...I have always thought we have an outdoors persons paradise up here. Rivers ,streams, ponds, lakes , and state land up the wazoo!! I have fished at least 40 different rivers and learned 5000 acres of state land pretty well and have not even scratched the surface in the last30 years... On the other hand you better enjoy hunting and fishing because we is lacking in cultural opurtoonities...
  6. Have not made it to Jay in a 10 years, awesome area. I am going to ski Whiteface,Gore, and Titus a few times anyway this year.Titus is small and would not know a black diamond trail if it was hit with one ,lol, but the price is right and an hour away. Still skiing on K2 4x4s and Lange banshees.
  7. I think he has many good things to say or help the TC ,but not all of them need any help. My encore muzzleloader will make one large clover shaped hole after another at 100 yds . Well after 3-4 shots I may have to break her down and give it a thorough cleaning( the barrel tolerances are tight ,because she is a bear to load after a few shots.) I did use his trigger and hammer spring kit though. You cannot beat a 2# trigger.
  8. There are some nice deer there. Not a huge deer but a decent buck we spotted a couple of years ago. This was below the upper falls just past the RR bridge. He was all banged up. We were guessing that he somehow fell over the falls.
  9. Lol... That's not right!
  10. Welcome! Good luck with the ml.
  11. With the lower poundage, I would stay away from mechanicals.. imo ..I know my arrow penetration is less now that I shoot Grim reapers and I shoot a fairly fast bow. Slick trick makes a very good broadhead ,They fly true, and are sharp and tough. If you had the budget I hear great things about Solids and German Kenetics extremely tough and sharp cut on contact heads .Pricey though. In the past I shot all my deer with muzzy ,not as glamorous but they always did the job. I just always hated to resight in my out of tune bow..lol
  12. I am sure the 2 deer I saw this year with broken legs were not born that way either. As well as the all the the other grazed and wounded deer in the woods.Personally, I am not real keen on the head shot(prefer neck /more chance for hydraulic shock to work its magic). With that said, I would rather see a well placed shot in the head or neck by a well practiced shooter than all the wily nilly shooting done by a good % of the shooters at that "HUGE" kill zone. When I am talking oh head/neck shots I am thinking 100yds or less. 90% of mine were sub 50 yds
  13. In my early hunting years, I hunted with a 308 reloaded with 47 gr 4064 powder and 125 gr siera boat-tails. It was an older Mauser action that someone had done a lot of work on "glass bedding and the works". I lucked out and picked it up cheap and it was my 1st gun and only gun for years. Never missed ..lol.. In those days I shot most of the deer in the neck (spinal region) .Always resulted in an instantly downed deer that never moved again. I think ,due to the "explosiveness" of the light bullet and high speeds this was very effective. Now that I have moved on to different gun/s and do not practice anywhere near as much as in the past I have moved on to the behind the shoulder shots, a lot bigger target ..lol.
  14. I hear you there..lol. I spent the the last 12 days /with 3 of them being the opening of shotgun downstate.. It was ridiculous ..sounded like opening of duck season up here. This was in an AR area too.. I could have harvested a deer (Waaay before legal shooting hours) but let her pass at 5' horizontally 30 vertically. It was not even close to being legal hours. Moments later the banging started.I have no idea how they could count antler points at those times. We came home with a truckload anyway. 50/50 mix bow /firearm kills.
  15. I like the legal hunting hours the way they are. Similar to our speed limits.. If one is reasonably close to the limit then you aren't likely to get in trouble. Flagrant disregard for the "spirit" of the law ought to end in tickets. If a nice deer comes out under my treestand 30 yds away 10 minutes before legal hours , I most likely will harvest that deer. Only an idiot would shoot 100 yds through the woods or fields , where they when they cannot clearly see the background. A little off topic but antler restrictions would probably slow down the brown is down mentality a little.
  16. Good shot, great deer dude!!. Imagine , if you left him until next year........... Lol.. all kidding aside . that is a nice buck.
  17. Nice deer! Looks like the area behind c cabins. But then again the whole park kinda drops right off .lol
  18. Is your neighbor home? Maybe you can get a friend with a snowplow or tractor push that rootball onto your neighbor's property, and swear the storm did it. Tell him you cut everything up on your side and that mess is his..lol...just kidding..well sort of
  19. Good luck , and be careful. Looks terrible on the tv. Not sure how much experience you have with a chainsaw, but always treat that sharp end with respect.... they kick and bite ...lol
  20. Yeah Yeah ....grind it in ......lol ...2 1/2 weeks and counting.
  21. Lol.. I have a "trophy" dead stick i shot a few years back , from Letchworth. It happened to be hiding in a little tall grass between me and a nice 8 point. We arrive Nov 8th this year in C cabins.
  22. I know how you feel. Being self-employed and only just starting out (again)I cannot turn down any work. This year fortunately (not for my hunting though) we are swamped. You know the old feast or famine thing. I go on a 10 day hunt early to mid Nov every year. Come hell or high water I'm goin even if the homeowner has to use a watering trough and hose for a bath ....JK ....sort of...lol
