Will be building a couple of boxes this year, the sawmill I bought is coming in very handy, marked a few jack pine for framing, larch for siding, and some black locust for post legs.. will be making sawdust soon.

Upcoming Legislation Changes email from NDA
G-Man replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Would love to see this pass unfortunately I have reservations that it will. I still see no reason to remove restrictions on drawweight an limb width now, if your hunting in ny with one now it should be compliant.. making the archery course mandatory for it would be a priority for me personally -
I have one friend that bow hunts all gun season ,he's in his 70s it's nice having a choice, a crossbow in archery with same kill rate effects no one choosing to hunt with a bow.. one new hunter I know one used x bow 1ST year and was afraid of using a Bow because it was hard ( everyone told him that).. set him up and he prefers bow because it seems easier to him as its much lighter and more maneuverable ( his words not mine) . Killed his 1st deer with bow, still hasn't killed one with crossbow.

It's not the using the bow but the art of learning to get close to game and when to move , when to draw, and where to aim. the whole reason a archery class should be mandatory for crossbow. It's a shame that nybh made it so It's " just like a gun" that narrative is the worse thing going for game. It's arrows deflect the same as a bows , kill the same way by hemoraging and require the same aiming spots and close ethical shots. That's the main reason I want inbinnfull inclusion , so that those that don't want to take a course can't just sign a piece of paper and go just because like a gun ... that's the biggest fallacy going.

Unless your shooing a traditional recurve or long bow your using same technology, and archery equipment when drawn by hand , which would be glove, tab or fingers... 99% all use a trigger release today.
-
Busted moving into position, never drawing .. if your busted drawing you drawing wrong time, or bow makes noise. Easier from a blind yes off a rest yes.. from normal ladder or hang on ,same if not harder as tree gets in way of horizontal limbs.. one of the reasons I have no issue with limits on limb with or draw weight. It's a trade off.

About anyone who thinks crossbows are easy..target vs hunting situations are totally different, can be great target shooter but shale like a leaf with game in front and not be able to hit broadside of barn...
-
I'd give the 1st 2 weeks of November to traditional archery and oct 1st 2 week as compound , traditional only then open up crossbow traditional compound for last 2 weeks oct.. if it's truly about preserving "archery " then the hardest to use should have the best time, bonus is tons of bucks would make it thru season and be available for gun hunters.
-
They kill by hemoraging and are propelled by a string. Same as a bow. What does it matter if they are included in all season harvest rates are the same. You can use a recurve or long bow in same season. You still have to move into position for a shot 35 yards and in for 90% of shot taken most under 20 yards.. just admit you fear someone killing a deer , that's it.. most on here hunt private land so won't effect us at all. And requiring the archery course instead of a piece of paper signed would deter many from even taking it up , as it is now ,nybh has created a free for all with the idea they are a gun.. arrows don't fly like a bullet at all.. shots will deflect same as any arrow..

The let offs now are so high that the weight of a riser will keep it drawn , with modern cams there is no reason to draw high weights. The arrows kill fine at reasonable hunting distances.

Most guys pick up a compound maybe a month before season shot a few dozen arrows and then never shoot another all season unless it's at a deer.. most are not avid archers that practice year round, of all the members here ( who already have a bias as they are more avid and choose to participate in a forum) its still the same 20 guys that post.. the 1st shot post are the same group, you cannot say all bow hunters practice all the time. I will say most do not .

Same wounding rates, and shot didtances were the same.. They also had to submit daily reports after hunting. The average wounding rate from 1989–2006 was 18 percent, with no difference between compound bow and crossbow users. As a side note, hunters who harvested the most deer had the lowest wounding rate. https://www.bowhuntingmag.com › ... Do Crossbows Wound More or Less Deer? - Petersen's Bowhunting

I have several friends that shot junior and senior Olympics, best shots I ever saw at targets couldn't kill a deer if it wanted to die, hunting is far differnt from target shooting.
-
At a target , not hunting situation 35 yards here in the woods and your arrow will deflect off anything , same for crossbow
-
Yes using My old bow and sights set up for him at proshop. Once they are set , it's not hard stay still and release. Guys consisitany shoot 3 in groups at 75 to hunt muledeer pronghorn and elk out west.. here a shot over 35 in woods is ill-advised , bow or crossbow. The interesting part of the article is crossbows were shot from lead sled.. try off hand .. make a huge difference you would see compounds pass crossbow in accuracy if that was done apples to apples , most are 2 or 3x as heavey as a bow and front heavy.. ( reverse limbs help but still heavier) plus try shooting behind the tree your sitting against.. the horizontal limbs get in the way and decrease your killing angle field significantly, when compared to a compound.. off a rest I will say yes more accurate at range in hunting situations they are statistically the same . Many studies have been done on wounding and kill rate..

From a rest .. try shooting around a tree or holding up it for a minute waiting for a deer to step out, target and hunting situations are totally different
