  1. Easyist call to learn is a box, or push box, then slate or pot call, i don't even use a mouth call. Learn where the turkeys roost, learn lay of the land and how to get close to a roosted bird quietly, with minimal/no use of a light. Calling is only 10% of turkey hunting, I've killed many birds just setting in a travel/feed area scratching leaves. Most importantly do not fall into the i have to sound perfect while calling(cadence is the only important thing), some of the worst callers out there are real hens!!!! Calling contests are not a good place to learn. see if you can find "America's wild turkey" on video from netflix or amazon. will teach life cycle of the bird and uses actual video of hens calling, toms , ect.
  2. It will help, find roost areas, strutting areas, travel areas, 2 ft is a good height. You canget some amazing strutting photos..

    first ice fishing

Been cold all week here, ice is building at about 1/2 in a day, should be 4in or better by the weekend. Would help it it stopped snowiing....
  4. frost seeding is good but the ground should of been cleared of vegatative matter in fall... Ordered seed today for spring, never to early as a lot of the good mixes sell out fast! especially with drought in most of th ecountry this year.
  5. I would believe it cows are pretty dumb and can be snuck up on pretty easily, face it they don't get hunted by predators much if at all anymore in the east. bears are strong and fast, seen their damage to a barn they wanted to get in at the cow feed(corn and oats n such) rip a 2x6 in half with one swipe, wouldn't take much to rip a cow's neck to shreds.

    first ice fishing

Case and harwood are usually first to freeze, been in low teens here at night, ice is about 2 in thick now.. little to thin for me personally
  7. Saw 3 different ice fishing huts on case lake today on my way into work. Guess ice fishing season has begun!
  8. Its not the bullet. its the diameter of the sabot you need to change if your shooting sabots. they may be .495 .498 .499 or .501 or .502,.503,.504 then you need to see what size bullet they take .44 or .45 and again bullet are not exact .452 is a 45 cal bullet as is a .454. same for 44 cal bullets. muzzleloading is not dropping down a couple of bullets a sabot and shooting , to get true accuracy you need to find the right powder, cap or primer, load, sabot or bullet that works in your gun! Kind of like setting a bow up properly , you can shoot arrows from the box but to acheive the best accuracy you need to find broadhead/fletching and legnth of fletching , spine stiffness, legnth of shaft , weight of all components, ect.
  9. Chineese is disese free and is a low growing orchard tree, Pure American will succum to the blight and is a tall fast growing timber tree. They have hybrids available 99% american ect. the american chestnut foundation has good info on them www.acf.org hybrids are available thru many nurserys http://www.chestnuthillnursery.com/Dunstan-Chestnut-Trees-1918.Category.html?gclid=CNChssrkv7QCFQyk4AodLAUAsw Americans produce very fast and are very good to eat (taste like cashews to me). they will gorw anywhere and were once the dominant tree in the northeast over 1/4 of the forest was chestnut.
  10. There is a small pocket of them in java according to dec. Kind of wish they would ban them from nys game farms, if they get out and they do... they are uncontrolable mibile destroyers of habitat.

    deer and bear

I have had bear and deer on the same camera numerous times, but those bear seem to be passing thru the area and it would be months before i got a pic of that bear again, i think this is different with such a large male bear denning in a small area. Maybe i'm trying to piece to much together but nothing has changed food, pressure or funnel wise in the area of the treestands except this bear taking up residence in this den.
  12. Was wondering what others think of this. I have 2 stands that have always been great for deer hunting especially bow. 2 years ago that stopped and this year deer movement was almost nonexistent by the stands ( they are both in a natural funnel along with being on edge of cover break/change). Two years ago i started getting a lot of bear pics in the area, and this year killed a bear out of tree tops only 75 yards from either stand that upon further investigation i believe was being used as a den for at least 2 years.. Do you think deer will avoid an area that smells of bear? I know bears will kill and eat fawns. But would this be main reason the deer movement dropped off so dramatically? I am hoping with the resident bear gone the deer movement will return to normal, guess it will be a wait and see...
  13. 18in on the ground, but ground isn't froze melting from bottom up
  14. Not lazy... just waste of money... if your going to clear the vegetation away. You can do it much cheaper
  15. Most people bashing crossbows have never shot one..they are loud and equivalent to a modern compound. Range and accuracy wise. They still require practice especially pulling it to cock it evenly and consistently. I truly believe their biggest complaint is others will be joining their season, possibly taking their deer..

    Deer/culling

Just open it for bow hunters, kill 2 does to get a buck tag.. people will line up to hunt
  17. Damn!, just realised my last meal before the end of the world was bean and wieners.... should of splurged for dinner i guess... What did you have?
  18. Good job! and way better than an amish built shed in my opinion.
  19. no gun or crossbow during archery would of eliminated all smallgame hunting as well as duck goose.. was a bad bill from the get go....
  20. They are considered livestock, dec concerns are probably over diseases that can be transfered to wild game. You would need permission from gamefarm not dec
  21. If you take the time to read the link i first posted most have been stopped be an armed civillian, and again most were stopped with minimal loss of life. Seems the worse or highest victim counts occored when no armed civillians were present.
  22. I get out for grouse 4-5 times a year after big game, birds are spooky now and flush a lot further so its a 12 ga,mod or full choke with 7.5 or 6 shot
  23. spring is still a long way away... hope he makes it
  24. bet he has a no smoking sign on his door, fine cedar and a spark....
