  1. Depends how thick an area we are pushing 20 yards between drivers sometimes. The standers are all in elevated stands, and have to wait to shoot till deer are past them, and do not leave the stand till the drive is done and all drivers are out, even if they shoot a world record! Safety first! Drivers can only shoot straight ahead, or maybe strait ahead or off to one side if driving on a diagonal. Setting up a well coordinated drive is like creating a painting. Escape routes are learned and must be covered, as well as coordinated movement of the drives at the correct pace, not to slow but not to fast. It really is a thing of beauty when it all comes together.
  2. Ask if you can change the fence line to exclude the area you want to plot. Cattle will eat anything you plant
  3. No one has hunted here since opening week , except myself. the deer are returning to normal patterns. i like to do pushes or drives during last weekend of muzzloader, as the woods are devoid of everyone but my group. i will not do them on reg gun season weekends as surrounding properties push them all to us any way. Best way to have deer late in the season is to have a thick area as large as you can and stay out of it all year!! no scouting, no hunting, deer retrival only after dark. perhaps cutting some trees in the dead of winter mid day to keep it thick. any pressured deer will find this unpressured area and move in and stay through the whole season. find an unpressured area(way in on state land / close to houses, that clump of trees in the middle of a huge field, that everyone walks by cause its so obvious, and you will find the deer...
  4. Maybe he could retire from being stupid, obviously the second time he approached it he did so head on....
  5. That is/was the main reason the proposal to decrease the minimum distance to 100' for bow was tried last year. It was defeated. The large lot sizes in some suburbs need this to control populations. Instead they use more of our tax dollars to hire sharpshooters to bait and shoot in populated areas, rather than gain revenue from bow hunters who would purchase licenses and perhaps buck tags in an earn a buck situation.....
  6. If an air gun can kill a deer, wild hog(i've seen it) there is no difference between them an a regular gun and all existing gun laws should apply. For urban areas, bow/crossbow are only viable options even with 500' rule.
  7. Had a friend that used one this year, got a doe with it, don't know what kind of bullet. A. 223 is a little light imo.
  8. Never liked to ask during season, did once though and it got me the best piece of turkey hunting land in walton. Knock, at a respectable time, ask and explain what your intentions are, have some references ready, written down(not family). Be polite and respectful. If they say flat out no, ask for next year. We asked for turkey hunting and 5 years later had run of the property including deer season, although we never hunt deer there. Even when the owner leased it out for hunting he reserved the first week of turkey for us no charge. Of course the christmas ham and cards prolly helped every year..
  9. A wise man once told me you have to hunt where the game is... not getting deer or few sightings find a new place to hunt! A little change of even a half mile can make a big difference. Food source, mast availability, cover, undisturbed areas, all play a roll in where the deer will be, my neighbor cant understand how we shoot so many deer and he sees so few, but his stands are based on summer sightings in fields, after opening day the deer aren't there..

  11. yeah my corn planter has been rebuilt 2x already since i owned 95' its jd 2 row from 1948. works but chains are getting wore, and opener s are wore down bad. cracked the holder for the seed bucket this year, either braze or weld it to fix.. tractors are in good shape thankfully, and i need to fix a cracked disk on my harrow..
  12. Yeah, we always got along with neighbors and it was good to go on their property and good for them on ours. some where in the mid 90's people decided it was their deer, and now complain nothing is moving..no deer seen, the "lost guy walking around sure moved a lot of deer" miss those days of cooperative drives, though we have rekindled that in muzzleloader with the surrounding camps..
  13. Just cause land is private doesn't mean its safe, unless you can patrol 24/7 stuff like this will happen. I'd get a bear box and secure a camera to the tree and then put another one up not to far away. catch the basterd(s) and then threaten prosecution if you ever see them on the peoperty again.. if they get one cam, they will probably miss the other, amazing how scared they get when u show them a pic of them in the act...
  14. Well, i've tagged out until late season(have an anterless only tag) so i started working on some equipment that needs repair from late plantings... corn planter needs an overhaul, including some cast iron brazing/welding. And a 3 bottom plow needs the pins changed from cat 2 to cat 1(field find for price of scrap) guess its never to early to start on this stuff and get a jump on spring. Not to mention some pruning of apples (not much of a mast crop and deer are really looking for food)though i might wait till after christmas for that.
  15. I would think if you see herds of does you have to many....shoot them!
  16. I have killed 2 big bucks off the ground, one during gun by tracking it on snowshoes, 140class 8pt. And the second with bow still hunting to a stand. 130 class 10pt. I have shot numerous deer off the ground including a nice 8pt this year. And almost prefer it although i have 37 stands set for bow and gun on my 274 acres. Go slow while still hunting and keep those eyes moving, you will most likely see only part of a deer not the whole thing. It then becomes a stalk to get into range. Practice in the summer stalking woodchucks, with your. 22rifle. If you have access try to stalk deer on land you don't hunt in summer. Practice makes perfect! Over time you will consistently learn where deer will be on the property you hunt and can be more careful and ready on your approach to those areas... i also got my bear off the ground(would of never jumped it out of a tree) try it! You'll like it!
  17. They proved one walked thru nys, got killed in vermont i believe last year . if he has one there better tell him to pick you winning numbers for the powerball as well!
  18. No fat on my bow buck, nov 3rd 7pt 2.5 year old. and no fat on my 7pt gun nov19th 2.5 year old. bear was loaded with fat as well as worms... Had 0 mast crop this yeard hard or soft, deer had 5 acres of corn cleaned out by end of october.. all the stomach contents have been greens(i assume some have been my turnip tops...
  19. Your 29, doesn't impress me, i was 27 with 274 acres of my own.. not family property. A compound bow with release and sights can be learned very quickly, obiously it doesn't take years as your 29... learn a long bow 150lb pull, no let off, or how about keeping the powder dry in a flintlock in the middle of a hurricane?. the group you belong to is selfish, a crossbow will not ruin any season, or are you that bad a hunter you don't know how to hunt pressure? lots of people here hunt stateland big woods and wilderness and are very sucessful. A young guy like you should learn som humilitey and step back listen, watch, and learn!! I'm still learning and hope to my whole life! The game belongs to the state all game sorry thats the way it is...
  20. Been an odd year in that we have had no apples, no nuts, no mast of anykind! Stomachs are full of greens. Cleaned out 5 acres of corn before the end of october. Lots of bucks around and camp has taken 7 so far (10 guys) with a few misses. Lots were passed up during bow, and guys still passing small one and does( we get most our doe take during muzzleloader) but have 4 in the freezer already. Lots of east wind has things screwed up more than anything i think, our stands are set for west winds(south or north) as that is predominant direction 99% of time except this year...maybe 20%. Nice its been cold the last week but was very warm during bow, and rut peaked opening weekend of gun season.! For me personally one of my best seasons in recent memory.got my buck during bow and gun as well as a big bear.not to mention the deer i passed...
