Cant eat horns anyway..but an archer shooting a bb is bad imo unless the archer is a new one (first deer or two), running deer with gun.. mistakes are made.
-
Kill em both and donate meat, deer are overpopulated. And non monogamous... don't need a lot of bucks

woolys "true euro" attempt..
G-Man replied to wooly's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
great 1st attempt, yep center nasal bone(cartilage should of stayed) great top see true euro's and not western skull mounts(what everyone calls euro) -
color phase. redish. smoky is also possible i've seen mounts of each, cool to see..

id would make the corn cross the centerline of field so deer can staand at on end and look down the middle, make it reach far enought across field so you can get a bow shot from opposite tree line, when deer round the corner of corn.

yep they've been gobbling on and off for a week now, soon they will be on my lawn waking me up after working all night, my favorite time of year, and least favorite at the same time. have heard a few shots from cuba lake(as some open water)

i use and still use a moped and blow the horn while going silently thru the woods works well, one bird use to gobble to the neighbors horse whinnining...he is no longer with us

I really think is a player/ head office problem, just a mechanic that needs round bolts cant fix the car if you give him square ones... plus its a shortend season, no conditioning / practice except a week before, sure some players worked out but i guarentee they didn't work as hard as they woud with trainers hounding them... watch this bite us in the ass.....

i like a 50 black powder pistol 12 in barrel, does well out to 100 yrds with opensights, killed a few deer with it and a wild boar. you have to watch for older tc encore and contender barrels they are not the legal 15 in but 15 and 1/4 they are sold as 15 in barrels. nobody ever turned them down to 15 in. you can get pinched for barrels to long especially if eco has had a bad day.

I am A hunter and a conservationist, and have got in many arguments with nyscc council as well, as for the surpluss in conservation fund, licences were raised to create this several years ago. I have argued with people from phesants forever and even participated in a banded bird project (yes some do make it thru for following seasons) i just have a problem , putting more fish in the tank instead for people to catch instead of making the tank bigger so to say. Most field dec personall seem to agree with me, saying the funding isnt there, the way the program is now it is awaste. i have been improving my own habitat and have tried to secure pheasants to release,(to see if they would become self sustaining here.)most people that have birds are like i'll give them to you then we'll go hunt them... NOT what i want to do if i was home i'd try to raise them myself(i know what i can or can't do.. they are a beautiful and tasty bird, not much of a challange to get in my own experiance, they are giant kites.... but the nwtf has done it the right way find suitable habitat and once breeding can support a hunt open season on them. why pheasant forever doesn't push this approach is beyond me. it would be limited to the northern lake ontario plane, and fingerlakes region as most suitable habitat, and i'm sure hunters would travel to hunt birds if thats what they like to hunt.

No no habitat management but you can get that from a good forester, they will work with you to manage for timber, wildlife or both. You can get info from forestlandowners orginazation. Or from the nwtf wildlife biologist (kip adams) if your a member. As well as your countys soil and water conservation district, will have assessment and fees listed on their website. A lot are free or at low cost.

As for economic input in to general fund, yes dollars can be matched, but we have no personal/equipment to carry out project let alone do economic studies, the few thousand 8000 is the closest number i can find die hard pheasant hunters should pay for the pheasant program rather than the general hunting community. Or eliminate it and they can pay for the birds they want at a game farm. Average cost is 25- 28 per bird to raise, we could buy them cheaper from another state (this was even proposed a few years ago) if your buisness is failing do you keep getting loans to keep it afloat? No... especially when the outlook isnt changing. Habitat work may allow pheasants to reproduce naturally here but none is done.... its a poor plan, to keep pumping money into a failing system. Same goes for fish, how many fish have been destroyed to contamination in the hatcherys... waste of money...

No i do not, care for the fish stocking programs either, i am not a put and take hunter or fisherman. If pheasants forever would work on habitat and then reintroduce birds. Trap n transfer like the nwtf, and fisheries we closed and allowed natural spawning to take place. I wouldn't have a problem spending moneys on those programs. They want a new power project in the lower niagra river, might effect salmon fishing (not native to the lake) go with new power i say. The dec want eradication of wild pigs no question asked, but release pheasant that carry black head disease that kills turkey, trout and salmon stocking that carry whirling and other things.. money should be better spent on enforement and habitat/ native game management. As for letting someone in the door, do it ourselves and shut them up! Non- native is non native weather is be bird/fish/plant/animal policy should be uniform. If we are raising fish to reintroduce them in an acid/pollutant killed river or lake, or reintroduce an native animal to a reclaimed mining area or for native habitat that is different, raising them so that they can be slaughtered by hunter/ fisherman in a put n take is not good management. The hunters fishermen that want non native species should pay out of pocket themselves on a game/fish farm..

I use an elk bugle to locate stubborn bird, (sick of hearing owls/ crow calls in middle of the day plus it scares the crap out of other hunters i'll put my slate against anyone's box, or diaphram, 3 strilers can make hundreds of different sounds and tones and pitches and loudness or softness . seems everyone uses diaphrams, i use slates, wingbones, and a box or two (pushbox is in there).

the land pays for itself with logging as well a i do live on the property. the electric is on in my house anyway. freezer is one i inherited but say i got it used for 50$, and wrappig supplies are minimal 10000 ft wrapping paper(professional roll) last 3-5 years for me for 40$.even if i write off a whole months electric bill at 75$ a deer take me about an hr from hanging to freezer. 5 hrs charge out of a month but put the rest toward keeping it frozen(though you still have to keep yours frozen from a butcher as well uinless you go to the store every other day or so to buy meat)., i'm still under a dollar a pound. as for a pro if your doing to make income your charging a lot for what your giving, 1 hr to butcher bonless cuts, you sell the hide.$65 plus? as for my time hunting its only on days i don't work, getting deer is not hard they are like fleas on an old hound. as for starving no i wouldn't but it sure saves a lot of money. and the butcher as a buisness is writing off a ton on taxes i'm sure . some guys i know were getting charged 80$ plus not including sausage making.. if you do it yourself and get 2-3 deer a year you'll beat the butchers price on any meat there is. i Stated doing my own when the charge went to 40 bucks a deer. 1989... so i've save thousands of dollars in this time.

They're tough, mine ended up in the worst multiflora rose patch, in 1 circle. It consists of 4 circles, ine in the center the others spaced out like a 3 bladed broadhead., another one hit the edge of a pond and they had to measure it to see if it counted as a water feature.interesting guys to talk to

should of kept the broken side, and a good glue would of fixed it..... you can make a new side for it. or buy a new one.

Lets see gun bought, 25 years ago= 185$, licences $100 (supersportsman), bullets sill have 20 boxes of slugs at 1.19 a box from the 80's (bought a case) 5 deer in freezer aproximatly 200 lbs of bonless cuts (do the cutting myself) writing the cost of gun off over 25 years, adding in licences, and slugs. i pay about .55 cents a pound for my meat. less is i write off the gun after fist year. i don't think i can get any meat for that price anywhere....and that doesnt include fish or small game take , 2-3 turkeys a year , and lots of fish...hmmmm guess meat hunting does pay...

They have a test plot on mine put it in 5 years ago, to see how land use/ timber species change. They come every 5 years remeasure trees, count seedlings/saplings, duff, fern and, berry types. Pretty interesting if you can spend the day with them while they do it. They are doing a grid across nys. You can cut remove, develop it. They just want to see whats changing in the woodlands.

Yep, during a shortened season that may be a bad idea... no training stamina building, or practice.. maybe the grass seems better on other side of the fence....wait n seee..

I really don't have a problem with this, perhaps if the money was spent on habitat improvement, and stocking done and season closed to established populations i would feel different. My opinion if you want to hunt pheasant go to a game farm and buy the birds you want to shoot yourself. Thats a lot of money that could hire e-con officers, and fund habitat improvement.

Just turkeys being turkeys... hens can hold sperm for almost 30 days, most breeding takes place in late march and april. (Thats why we don't have season then. Much to the horror of some hunters who hear them gobble like crazy in april and feel we should hunt them then.) By the time may comes you hope for a second peak of breeding activity from hens that have lost nests...

Why have you decided on state land? I travel from buffalo area to delaware county and have numerous places to hunt turkey, all private land and all just from knocking on doors. Now is the time to check fields and knock on doors. You'ld be surprised how many allow turkey hunting, (although they have deer hunting leased out or keep it for their family and friends) farmers are busy in spring and many don't seem to hunt birds in that area. The most they can do is tell you no.
