1st is the property actually legally posted, i mean not just at road but entire property! names / address with street number not for example, joe blow, new hudson... i wish we had laws like ohio all, land is posted and you need written permission. I know a lot of people that complain about tresspassers but they post the roads and a guy wanders in 1 mile back in the woods and there isn't a sign to be seen anywhere. In nys if you don't see a sign its assumed its ok to hunt there(usually its not ). my personal belief is if you yourself don't own it someone else does find out who before the hunt. its best to ask first, the person may be lost, looking for a dog, tracking a wounded deer, ext.... i'm sure you would want the same courtsey given to you if you have to look for something.

I'm sure people are on other peoples all the time, most people do not have large acreages, my neighbor kicked a guy off his property cause it was posted, didn't realise the guy owned property on 2 sides and was "cutting the corner" found out the hard way when he shot a brute of a buck and went to retrive it, on neighbors he kicked off property.. never did get to follow the blood trail to retrive it... asking around first is best before reacting, he my be neighbor 2 propertys over that owns 10000 acres taking short cut home or looking for hunting dog.

thats going rate here, about 50-60 and hr for tractor work, 100 for dozer. but this area is pretty depressed.. ave income is only 29500 for family of 4...according to census...

bobcat tractors are just kioti's with white paint..lol
-
Keep in mind there are 2 banks in wny that do land contracts on vacant land. bank of holland and bank of evans easier to get if you money is with them of course . 15 year higher rate than a morgage but can be rolled into one if you build on land.

i use a farmall 300 with narrow end in the woods, great for getting turned around in woods. they do tip easy and wouldn't use on hill sides.and you need good breaks. i grew up using this tractor and am very confidant with it. if your not familiar with driving a tractor i get one with a wide front end, and added weight to the front, the breaks on a tractor are not like a car, you need to have cluch in as well. a good used ford with low profile is what i would recomend. 2000,3000 or a jubilee or 8n can all be found in great shape for about 3000-4000$. they do sell logging winches for tractors according to hp. a waggon is best for hauling block wood out. less chance of getting hung up.

plowing , discing, draging field, ready to plant(no lime or fert, or rock remover.) is about 150-200 an acre for cleared fallow ground (about 3 hrs work with small tractor). dozer work around here is about 100 an hr. every acre is different,...

Doc, no not an attack on bow hunting, but reasoning why the statistics show what they do. Bows are very efficient in the hands of those that practice most guys at me camp if they loose an arrow at a deer it is dead deer. Our bow success rate at camp is 80% with the 20 % never having loosed an arrow. Our gun success is 95% or better. 5% miss / wounding loss. Way above state averages. Just trying to see why 5% more with crossbow. Obvious would be once set up its on no real practice required, eliminating misses due to improper form. Or maybe its not having to draw it. Just looking for the obvious.

Benefits from having an uncle who was an award winning taxidermist. Growing up around that stuff you learn quite a bit. glad to see a true European mount being done. -

Close, you should skin before you attempt to cut makes it a lot easier.. I use a sawzall the cut should be just below the nose opening and cut the entire upper pallet of the top of the mouth off. (Approximately 1/4 in below lower bone of eye orbit). This exposes the entire brain cavity and much of the nasal passages . Allowing for very easy cleaning after boiling. I have several true europeans and will try to post a side view pic when i get home. -
So basically the statistics that show a better success rate with crossbow are useless with out knowing experience or not before they were used... another way to manipulate numbers one way or another. .... guess it just comes down to this 99% of the deer are taken by 10% of the hunters will just be fine no matter what the weapon type used......

Plus what is the ratio of gun hunters taking up crossbow success vs former vertical bow shooter using crossbow success. I know a few gun hunters who took up archery to get those good bucks early..but have yet to get a deer, let alone a few that have given it up completely and went back to gun. I expect the same thing with those taking up crossbow. You still need to learn how to get close to get em bow or crossbow.

There is a sportsman show at seneca/allegany casino this sat sun (feb 16 ,17th) being as its a foreign country maybe they will have some 30 round clips as they do not recognise nys's law.

Good points steveb! i'd rather see more hunters even if it means sharing part of my season with them. (why do you think they extended bow 2 weeks? maybe 2 weeks xbow early then bow only or vise versa.. always an angle when changing seasons)
-
Do you think that the 5% more success is beacuse they are more consistant because you and i both know 90% of bow hunters do not practice like they should, so it results in missed and wounded deer? vs xbow that once sighted in is on and requires less practice? which is better for the game? a clean harvest or not? I really doesn't matter for me if its a seperate season i'll get one if not i'll stick with bow.

A rotational planting there is all he would need. A deal worked out for the farmer to cut half the field for his own use, is also a possibility. 7 acre field is large and large equipment will be needed. Depending on condition of field a no plow planting and herbiside application would be the most cost effective if the farmer has the equipment . my equipment 3 tractors , 10 'disk, 3 and 5 bottom plows, and corn planter still cost less than an new atv at todays prices... and i have had them for almost 20 years now and many were field finds just paid for value of scrap. They will be a large equipment auction again in angellica this spring and many excelent buys can be made there and at other auctions. as well as private sales. I f i were to charge 50$ an hr it would take 4 hrs to plow if fallow 30 year old sod, 2 to disk, 2 to plant. so for under 500$ this year he would have a 7 acre plot. plus he seems to be looking for equipment of his own as well for future plantings.

That is a true european mount, skull mounts with teeth are american or texas but everyone calls them european... ugh

wi clover is the best i have used, deer walk by biologic to get to it! Just watch seeding rates and make sure you have firm seed bed.. some of my wi clover fields are now 7 years old.

corn is not 0 % nutritional value. it is low in protein, high in carbs(the ears that is) the young plant are eaten as well (14%protein) and face it if deer have large amout of fat reserve from carbs they come out of winter in better shape, when protein is important for antler growth. many of us are not antler growers. i leave at least 7 acre of corn every year and the deer are much healthier for it. especially in deep snows. thats why acorns are eaten like crazy high in carbs deer know what they need to make it through winter.... CARBS!!

Early May is best time if you already have soil prep work done. DO NOT OVERSEED seed is very small and tough to see if you see it its prolly too much.follow directions then take 1/2 of what they recomend per acre and cover your acre, then go back and use second half to cover again. that is biggest problem with clover overseeding and it chokes itself out... Cant get it in in may? Think about planting with oats or wheat or rye, cerial grains will grow faster and provide some shade for they young clover plants. The field can then be left to mature, or you can cut when 8 in high or so. worst thing for clover is for young plant to be exposed to excessive heat and dry.

You can get soil test for free, so not really a cost.... but fert, nitrogen, seed need to be figured in as well as spray for weed control or mechanical cultivating
