  1. Mine is just what the guys i hunt with call me...you'ld have to ask them why.....
  2. So if a seperate season was created oct 1-15 for crossbow was started you would not have a problem with it.....
  3. I have a neighbor who can lift hay, wood and lumber but cannot draw a bow back past the breaking point, my nephew has the same problem (yes there are genisis bows) fact is a crossbow is a good step into archery i can sit and help my nephew aim and hold a crossbow how do i do that with a vertical?? He wants to shoot a vertical bow and some day he will (wants to be like his father and uncles). But untill that time he is unable to join the ranks of hunters or target shooters. There are more out there than you think? For those lucky enough to have a woman in their life who hunts or wants to hunt wouldn't it be nice to be able to sit with them help them aim/hold a xbow when the weather is warmer and they actuall would want to hunt. rather than in the cold and snow?? just sayin'
  4. Arrow, as for your comment "Crossbow pusher", I am a bowhunter i have taken numerous deer with bow, and would like to see an atatl season, i do not and will probably never own a crossbow having shot many different models and knowing my bow is a more effecient, longer ranged and more versitile weapon. I understand you feel xbows are just like your shotgun i even think you are the only one who doesn't want crossbows I am trying to have you state your case! i have read up on ,shot, and have personally experianced them and do not see a theat to my fellow archers and fully would like to see some elderly/disabled and women and Kids!! get involved with the sport of archery. Some Kids and Women cannot draw a vertical bow back of suffient weight to effectivly harvest game but are of age! Wouldn't you want them to have a choice to join those who enjoy the early bow season?? Crossbows allow this!! Obviously you don't see the big picture and imo just are concerned about more hunters entering the wood to take your game!
  5. I think a reasonable solution can be reached by extending archery season to oct 1, and giving the xbow a 2 or 3 week full inclusion within the season, allowing disabled full access with a xbow for the whole season. The ohio hunters i work with hunt with both or prefer a vertical bow over a crossbow but they don't see a difference between them, I still don't see or understand how a xbow impeeds on a vertical bowhunters experiance,i dont think i would even know they are in the woods. I still think the underlying setiment against the xbow is i don't want more people in the woods when i am bowhunting.... As i have yet to hear or see documentation as to the contrary.
  6. Can't say for sure looking at your pictures but it looks like you have orchard grass, very tough to kill without spraying. It can be done by turning the ground disking and then harrowing it or disking it every few days for a couple of weeks. I dont think spraying will cost you as much as you think, you do not need to use a brand name like roundup, just find the active ingrediant and by a knock off. Tractor supply has several different brands. A 2 1/2 gallon jug of concentrated mix will do more than 7 acres at a cost of around 70$. As for a one time planting clover/alfalfa can have the weeds controlled in them by brushhogging. Corn would be tough without equipment, you said you have a farmer in the area? You might have him farm the larger open areas and concentrate on the edge and smaller hidden areas, perhaps letting him do the large area for free if he works up the smaller areas for you((always good to have a farmer friend,he'll have the equipment but they don't like to leave harvestable crops (it costs a lot of money to plow and plant and harvest even more as gas prices go up!) and he benifits as well as you!)). You don't need to mow down every field and plant it as well goldenrod fields and tall native grass fields are great bedding areas for deer and nesting areas for turkey, as well as songbirds. Of course for your own plots you might want to do a soil test, but if cash is a issue skip it just don't spend big $ for seed that may or might not grow.. try putting out oats(get them from a feed mill about 2 bushell an acre brodcast and dragged in and see how they grow cost you around 10-20$for 2 bushell last i bought some. If they seem to grow well overseed with a clover/or alfalfa mix. They will not grow as well without proper ph,and fert, but doing something is better than doing nothing.....
  7. Yes, i have a farm of sorts, and yes i have a lot of people hunt with me usually 8 during bow and 10 for gun. More over thanksgiving weekend and upward of 10 for muzzleloader, and yes we all get deer.
  8. And if you would read the article he reworks the article and admits the crossbow has a slight advantage but again you have to read ... this artiicle was written in florida to i don't see why or how he was pushing for crossbow when in effect the author was against it.. took the time did some research and wrote his findings..
  9. Well the ohio dnr does keep track of bow and crossbow, do you know they have a mandatory , deer check and it is written down what was used, as for the statistics i am not a stadisticion, but i can read what is complied by agencys, i also have the ability to look up other opinions and state my own same as you do, i haven't seen you post any articles or sites that are agreement with your opinion. you refer to studie s but when i look them up i don't see what your trying to convey written there. Again to you as you said in an earlier post the bow hunters are dissappearing in ohio to crossbow hunters... how did u get that when as you just said ohio doesn't seperate the stamp?? your are you just saying..obiously you are getting your info from somewhere...i presented my opinion based on experiance and was even able to back it up.. Sorry but as i said its the hunter that makes the difference not the type of bow....
  10. For those of you that want to hear some facts and how spin is put on them try this article. http://hunting.about.com/od/arch/l/aa020716a.htm
  11. Well, he's my inaccurate data.......More current information obtained from the Ohio Department of Wildlife (ODOW) for the year of 2001 says this: "Of the 155,000 archery participants, 70,000 used a crossbow, 55,000 use a vertical bow and 30,000 used both. Of seniors who apply for and receive a free license, 4,000 used a crossbow, 1,000 used a vertical bow and 1,000 used both. Success rates for 2001 were identical for crossbow hunters and vertical bow hunters at 14%." Not quite sure your being polite......
  12. Has anyone who is against these "weapons of mass destruction" actually shot a crossbow that is considered legal in ny? They have the same trajectorys as modern compounds although the new hoyt composite bow far surpasses the ones i've seen posted. I don't see the difference... its still up to the hunter the sucess rates are still below 20% for archers in nys and amazingly they are the same in ohio where these "wmd" are legal so it doesnt seem to give an advantage in any capacity .....
  13. I remember the party permits i seem to remember when they did away with that the number of licences fell as well...
  14. I thought you hunt kodak park by special permit?
  15. so a few thousand each year not really a big problem hurting the buck population then is it.....at least not as big as it would be if more people started killing more deer.... and reporting them.
  16. Anyone know any statistics on how many people actually take 2 buck a year?(not bonus dmp's just regular tags) I've seen the archery sucess rate is about 16% but that is for all deer. So i know a lot of people want ny to reduce to 1 buck any method, i just don't see 2 buck as being a huge problem.... jmo
  17. unless it's a trophy head b&c their not worth much.. 100-150, yoour better off lending them to a sport shop or club when you get room you can get them back.
  18. one vote, but they should be able to sway to vote(convince) the way they want the council with sound facts and arguments, like a debate... if their position is strong enough and based with fact.
  19. All the gamey taste i have ever had is from deer or pork fat, if you add anything add beef fat, deer fat does not disolve(liquify) at body temp so it gives a tallow taste to your meat or jerky, pork does at body temp but does not freeze at 32dregees so the whole time it sits in your freezer it is putrifying.(the whole you can only keep venison 3-5 months myth is based because of this). beef fat freezes at 32 and dissolves at body temp. if your making jerky use trimed venision no silverskin or fat, sliced or ground, don't show your deer off for 2-3 day before you get it cut up!! aging is only a option if you can control the temp(walk in cooler) I have had friends who know venison as gamey and don't care for it devower jerky and steak and ground properly cared for and never know what they are eating .
  20. sounds like you need to create some browse in the nearby woods theos eshrubs are expensive!!
  21. Pat, I plant 2 different kinds of food plots one for hunting over and another for helping the deer/wildlife thru the winter. my hunting plots are small less than an acre, my other plots are large 5 acres plus. my hunting plots has stands on the edge of them, my feed plots do not have a stand within 5 acres of them. A food plot may or mayv not draw the deer in for a shot(mostly bow season) where a bait pile brings them into a specfic spot. the dominate deer will chase away the other deer from a bait pile where a large food plot will give easy acess to the entire deer herd. the cost of putting in a large food plot is between 2 and 3 grand. fertilizer, seed, lime, spray to control weeds, not to mention gas time and equipment. baiting would be a in season thing where a food plot will continually feed deer in season and out. Before the ban on feeding deer was placed by the state i fed from deer season end till at least spring green up and some times beyond. i went thru 20 to 30 ton of corn at 10$ a 100 lbs. A food plot creates the same. if not a bigger draw for deer and other wildlife at a lot less expence and labor. When feeding deer it was nessary to have 4-5 stations to allow the less dominant deer a place to feed as a single dominant doe would chase bucks and doe away from a single feeder.
  22. Good idea guy but if the state operate like my company....to steal i line... all we are is dust in the wind.....
  23. MY understandiong is the pelts are better in may, the cubs are with their mother so protected under nys regs (no bear in a group) I've only had bear meat from sprin hunts in new brunswick and it's good !!
