  1. Doc, check with the buffalo museum of science they use to and probably still to have classes to teach flintknapping. was a nominal cost 25$ for 8 weeks when i went, i am sure you could do the pressure flaking, percussion takes a little more practice.
  2. it is funny.. had 15 deer walk thru my yard today snow not quite that deep but it was crusted they looked like they were walking on pins and needles almost up to their brisket in spots
  3. I should say that right now i would be against ar's but would be in favor of them if the DEC could come up with a comprehensive plan that would not only benifit the age structure of the deer herd but the habitat in general as well.
  4. At least 3 or 4 years ago at least thats as far as i can remember seeing it...
  5. The DEC still claims that there is no biological need for the implementation of statewide AR. This is a true statement as a yearling bucks can and will breed doe, as will a small number of button buck, the state needs to manage numbers not size or quality, plus their management areas are huge, hate to say it but ar's will be up to the individuals in this state. Pa, had a overpopulation and had to get the does undercontrol,i believe the ar's were only able to be put in place state wide there do to biologists running the show, this is not the case here in ny as everything here is political and money motivated......
  6. Best of luck moving onto real flint, onondaga chert(native to wny) is tough stuff to work with, you might want to heat treat it first. There is a flintnappers "convention" rendavous every year in letchworth statepark in august, its a great place to buy trade raw materials,As well as the ataltl compitition. I've used onondaga to make folsom points, cumberland as well as iroquois bird points. My favorite to use is jasper heat treated out of pa. Have you tried to work with a spall yet, or flute a point?
  7. well it's relevent in that it is definatley archery equipment, fact is if not outlawed in england the crossbow would be as common as the english language and history proves that the bow out performed the crossbow at range thus the reason for england's dominance thru out history in war. As for shooting it same as a gun not at all, having shot bow, gun, and crossbow(which is usually very front heavy). Further the argument for a bow season underwent the same arguments that the crossbow is now. It was considerd as inhumane and in effecient for harvesting game which we know is not truethanks to people like saxon and pope. You may shoot you bow year round but you and i know that there are many who pick it up a month or less before the season if at all. That scares me a lot more than a person using a crossbow. The advantage of having it already drawn is so minute that its not worth mentioning, you still need to practice, and be able to get close to your game, and the disavantage of recocking it for a second shot is immense and the fact that they are loud. How many of us take a field point to take a practice shot out of a tree? do that with a crossbow and all the game in the area will vacate.
  8. 1500bc -1066 mention of the crossbow in chinese history, 1508 the crossbow was outlawed in england to promote the use of the longbow, and in 1520 henry VIII demonstrated the effectiveness of the longbow to the french king repededly hitting the center of a target 240yards away. ... seems the bow has the further range and acuracy over the crossbow. taken from http://www.centenaryarchers.gil.com.au/history.htm seems like the historians belive the crossbow is archery equipment, of course there are those who would rewrite history to their favor, like the holicaust never happenend......
  9. Wish i could pinpoint when society changed, when i went to school most boys had a pocket or sheath knife, i remember bringing my 22 to school to hunt squirrels after with friends and the shop teacher...not that long ago, now metal detectors and cops seem to be the rule. Sad in my opinion.
  10. I suggest you read the bill allowing crossbows in gun and late archey season, then read this bill to allow use of them in the eary archery season for Disabled Hunters. i believe this is benifical for them and you should be supporting it. And don't give me the crap if you give em an inch they will make it legal for everyone. I would fight that as well (i personal would like a seperate season for them) This bill is for DISABLED HUNTERS and i don't think them as lazy not wanting to try a compoundbow they are disabled!

  12. The bill that allows crossbow now limits the drawweight, and size of them so i don't see what advantage a disabled person will have other than being able to get out in better weather during the archery season with equipment that allows them to overcome their disablity of not being able to draw and release a standard bow. so the maybe few thousand disable people that may.. join the ranks of bowhunters.
  13. unless you want a fingers only archery season you pull or release a trigger to relaese your bow..sounds like pulling a trigger on a gun to me...
  14. I think many people don't try them because the conception is that a bow it hard and you need to practice all the time, truth is once you set your (fiber optic pins) it really isn't that hard at all, and if you think crossbows are easy "as lot of people do" try sighting one in! you still need to be steady, get a good sight picture, estimate range(or spend more $ for a range finder) the BIG difference is a crossbow is easier to draw and hold for disabled(shoulder, amputation for example) people which is what this bill is for allowing them a chance to hunt with a bow in archery season!
  15. well arrowslinger then state why you don't feel a crossbow isn't a bow... they have almost been around for 2000 years, first as a recuve or strait limb, later as a compound. Seems to me about the same development a a "bow" especially todays's 80 % let off and release aids.
  16. tac would not be illlegal...kind of like pistol legnth..who cuts down an encore barrel to be legal (factory barrels are a quarter in to long) and like the model 12 shotgun illegal without a plug. My guess people will be using them anyway.
  17. Well arrowslinger, all i can tell is your afraid of more hunters entering archery season if crossbows are allowed... Beyond that bows and crossbows are both effective at killing game.. perhap you want a seperate season for longbow.recurve, compound bow, crossbow, flintlock, percussion muzzleloader, smoothbore muzzleloader, rifle, shotgunand pistol. They are both archery equipment and thus both belong in an archery season..
  18. Have and love a marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70, so fun to shoot and plink with! they came out with one with a larger loop for gloves..guess i'm buying another one!!
  19. 3 1/2 + would be even easier to tel lif the pic was from nov, awesome looking deer for september
  20. Doc, when gas was almost 4.00 dollars a gallon the price asphalt was so high it was almost cheaper to do concrete..i know i built a house during that time..
  21. exactly bubba!...to those of you that use a compound i guess you need to back to a long bow or recurve with 0% let off and see what archery use to be, this crossbow bill is designed for the disabled, and the crossbow bill in place now limits the drawweight and size of the crossbow it will never be a 100yrd weapon in ny...
  22. I think in areas they might be, but i'll hold off judgement till spring, had a good thaw in january but end of febuary/beginning of march is more important need a thaw then, turkeys have a much mor difficult time with a crust on hte snow...cant scratch thru.
