Good 2 1-2 second pic tells story...
-
That buck was 8 1-2 years old have his sheds going back to spring 94' was twice as tall the previous year..guess he was past his prime, missed him 2 weeks before with bow. Everytime i saw him his head was down like that pose..guess his horns were to heavy!! lol! its my best buck 24" inside with 27" main beams.

Here some mounts, some pics are from camera phone...

Anyone out there actually know how to determine your buck to do ratio? I've seen trail camera counts over bait in a given time period(can't feed deer in NY) I see the dec buck take per square mile...no idea how they determine that... Well any thoughts on how to. I have my camps harvest data for the last 15 years and we are seeing lots of bucks and harvesting them as well but I am trying to figure out if our doe take (10 a year right now) needs to be adjusted.

Doc, couldn't agree with you more. my neighbor to the north is a hunting camp sits in a elevated box blind overlooking a field, he says there are no deer and if he gets one its everyother year or so, we take 15-20 deer a year every year since 1995 his "no deer" sure seem to be reproducing all the time.. i live on the property i hunt and in spring and summer i see herds of 50 or more in good hayfields and we consistantly pass up deer everyseason. I've told him to get back into the woods a little as the deer here seem to vacate the fields just before season starts(lot of road hunters out there) but he won't so he sees no deer....

Thoughts on the value of a sanctuary...
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Splitg2, Yeah its amazing how fast guys that would shoot any buck start to hold out for a better buck once they see a few in the woods. -
I had food plots for several years and though they drew in game, the group i hunt with never saw a huge improvement untill we decided to set an area aside as a sanctuary. We located it toward the center of the property, on a piece that was almost clearcut by the former owner. we now see 20 to 30 deer heading to it every opening day including 6-7 buck. We never hunt it and only enter it in winter to further cut undesirable trees to help keep it thick. We now consistantly take 1-2 nys"book bucks" off the land, as well as see many more decent bucks, our neighbors benifit as well as one took his best buck in over 50 years of hunting this past season! We have no point or spread restrictions and just post trail cam pics of our better bucks to our hunters e-mails... i guess just knowing that there are better bucks around seems to make them hold out for one of the better ones on camera! This way all the hunters in camp are making their own decision on what they wish to harvest and are happy as a result. Anyone else try something like this?
-
will a spread restriction actually work? here's a mature deer harvested with a 13 1/2 in inside spread...would that make the grade? i have shot and seen harvested 1 1/2 year olds with grater spread than this. I think its up to the individual to determine what a good or great buck is to them.

Anyone else actually read the original book Bambi by felix salten?
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in General Chit Chat
Hey eddie if you get it and read it maybe we could start a book club!! lol -
if your going to be serious get the best camera you can buy with the lowest lux rating this is what lets you tape in low light. it is tough to film yourself and get the kill, i use a camera tree mount and tape my friends, for turkey a tripod on the ground with a good piviot head. extra batteries are a must! Digital hi def is in right now but most of us can get by with standard def. the price of these cameras has come way down and you can get a cannon gl2 for example very reasonable. I have as much or more fun filiming my friends as much as hunting myself!!

Anyone else actually read the original book Bambi by felix salten?
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in General Chit Chat
Actually it is a very good read, it is a natural histoy of the red stag in austria, written around 1890's i believe, The stag bambi hates the rabbits and squirrls because they eat his food, the Squirrls only live 6 months or so and the one bambi meets at the beginning of the story is actually the great great great grandfather of the one he talks to at the end.(the original get its throat ripped out by a ferret). the owl hunts mice and such, the fox hunt and kill the phesants, and inturn are run by the hunters dogs. A fawn is captured and raised by man and released back into the wild by man. there are poachers, hunters and bambi's father in it as well and does teach him how to avoid the hunters dogs. Definatly not what disney turned it into... -
This is the problem with disney "humanfying" animals....... eveyting is just so cute and cuddly.. well lesson learned.

Well i think ar's are going to have to be an individual thing, the state wants to manage numbers not age. For those of you that say well if i pass it some one else will shoot it...maybe but maybe not i know that my neighbors benifit from me passing deer as the deer they are getting are getting bigger as well. If you own land i think the best way to protect the younger deer is make a sancuary(the thickest nastiest stuff you have avaiable,or cut stuff down and make it thick!) and then stay out of it all the time! you'd be amazed at the number of deer that will head there for safety from your "kill em all neighbors" property. Most important don't hunt your sanctuary at all! wait the deer will leave and the one you want will eventually come out.. just my opinion......

Most still have their horns here...guess i wait a bit longer.

I use skyline and have used it for over 10 years, would use asat or predator if that wasn't availiable when my skyline wears out, Big brand names look good but have you noticed they show their treestand patterns from eye level? Get on the ground and look up at realtree or mossy oak= blob, Maybe they work on those southern deer in dark woods but i have a lot of mapletrees and snow to deal with.

A little to much technology goes a long way........
