  1. It seems people think a xbow is a super weapon. They have the same range and capability as a modern compound! The bolt is shorter an lose energy and therfoe velocity faster than an arrow. The only diff is the string is held via a trigger mech. And a vertical bow is held by the shooter although possibly at a much lessened weight "let off" . Fact is its the person who needs to be able to get into range undetected to place the killing shot.... I know a lot of good target archers who can group under 3in at 100yrds but have yet to kill a deer...
  2. Just wondering why there isn' t a spring season? With all the expanded fall area why isn't a spring season a viable option in certain areas?
  3. Amazing how nyb is a member and yet can't convince the counsel to take its opinion... just sayin'
  4. Well that would make to much sence to ask what everybody wants... of course the old addages will still take place : The squeaky wheel Gets the grease. And 10% of the hunters take 90% of the game....
  5. Yeah that xbow now legal under dec definition. If you were going to post a pic as an example I would of picked a legal one....
  6. Well its the landowners that let the snowmoblie trails thru their property that don't want it to open till after deer season. As for externding bow to oct 1 nyb and nyscc both are pushing for it and I ecpect it will happen, but why not give 2 weeks to the crossbow then or if it is infact as I think nyb will fight it as well can't let someone else get a shot at my deer. I admit I started bowhunting to get a better opportunity at deer. But I would also buy and use a crossbow if it afforded me the same opportunity!
  7. Looks like better weather this week so back to doing a little tsi, and maybe tap a few sugar maples
  8. I give the guy credit burned his tag on a 6 day old kill could of just called dec for tag for the find. A lot of determination and pride there!
  9. Looks like a pretty good browse line on your tree.....
  10. Ok no crossbow in early season then how about crossbow oct1 thru 14th then reg archery oct 15 to frir before 3 sat in nov. The bow season cam stay "pure" .
  11. I wonder how many people if allowed to try crossbow would eventually want to try bow? I know a lot of people that used rifle and a began looking for a harder method and switched to muzzleloader, and then onto pistol.. some even to blk powder pistol.. maybe instead of trying to stop the crossbow they shoould embrace it as a learning step to becoming an elite archer??? I am sure some people will do just that.
  12. Waitin for a febuary thaw....still have the snow that came in dec,jan on the ground...need a little meltdown.....
  13. Fact is it still takes the person to get close enough to the game, a 7mm rem will shoot to 500yrd very accuratly, a english longbow 250yards not that many or any of us coulds see or shhot that far accuratly, it doesn't matter the weapon used you still need to get close enough to your target, my neighbor devided to take up bow hunting over 10 years ago, he came over and the guys at camp were shooting and helped him out. He was in shock that we were shooting so close 20-30 yards as he wanted to shoot his bow 50-60 or more yards. We got him sighted in for 20 and 30. needless to say he tried it for a year or 2 and gave up couldn't get deer that close to him, tried a few further shots and the arrow was in the ground well before the deer. Its the same with a crossbow the range is the same as a compound bow. Not many of us will take a 50yd shot with a bow but i know a lot of 3d shooters that consistantly shoot that far on the range but never approach that while hunting. If you have never shot a crossbow you are in for a rude awakining, those bolts drop like rocks, yes they have a scope but so do bows if you choose to install the bow models. I think the concern i hear is about more hunters comming into archery season period and untill those that really feel that way admit it , the crossbow will be their crutch.....
  14. The banter back and forth here is childish, its america set up a poll that says yea or nay for or against majority wins....this topic was about diasbled use during the early season....
  15. Pat, along your line of reasoning why not shine the deer at night...that would let u be selective... I thought the concept was to hunt deer, not just shoot them... I get the feeling you would be just as content to shoot a farmers cows at pasture just to get your meat....
  16. Glad to hear another sound voice of reason and reading comprehension! Kudo's to you bill!!!
  17. Ok, after reading and rereading this topic and related. I can only say it seem those in favor of the crossbow know , care about those who or are themselves incapable of drawing a standard bow and agree that for disabled that is fine. The people going off topic and don't want them at all in early season seem to have the idea they create a big advantage over their skill as an archer. I get the feeling they are more concerned that someone with a crossbow will kill "their deer" . Last I knew we didn't use the european system where the landowners own the game,we use a system that the game belongs to everyone! As for the huge advantage the xbow has over the bow, there is more to hunting than pulling a trigger or releasing a string, I know quite a few great archers who can robinhood arrows all day long that cannnot kill a deer or get close enough to one to harvest one. The same will hold true for those who will use a xbow it is not a miracle bow the person pulling the trigger is the one that ultimatly will be the factor in harvesting game!
  18. Actually bone was used quite a bit for points and fish hooks. For exacty that reason, even ivory was used. I've done paleontology and archeology for over 20years and it is amazing to see the craftsmanship that was done thousands of years ago.
  19. Here's a jasper point and arrow I made. The shaft is ceder with a deer leg bone insert, with dyed goose feather fletching. got a rabbit with it.
  20. www.amazon.com/Flintknapping-Making-Understanding-Stone-Tools/dp/029279083X goo book if anyone is interested.
  21. I have some old diagrams around i'll have to scan and post. As for letchworth it is usually the 3rd or 4th weekend in august. Usually same weekend as hot air baloons if i remember correctly. I get a mailing and when i do i'll post it. Pressure flaking isn't that hard and you will be able to make small point and notches fairly quickly, the main pressure flaker to start with is a piece of solid copper wire 1/8 is good inserted in to and old handle from a shovel or old broom about the legnth of your hand( the top of the the handle is best as its already rounded) the wire needs to stick out of the handle about an inch and is ground to a point(almost) the indians used sandstone to grind the tip of an antler smaller (the copper being and antler and like an antler has some give to it unlike steel) a thick leather pad is placed in the opposite hand(or a nice thick glove)the chips you will make will be sharper than a razor so it protects the hand. If you have a piece of glass say 3/8 in thick by 2in wide by 4in long , you need to imagine a centerline thru the thickness and flakes are removed from both sides of this centerline taking care not to go from one side say top to bottom of the thickness, or stay below the centerline and push on the edge so that the flake will come off between the pad and the piece of glass get to high on centerline and you will break the piece in half most likley. there is more to prepping the edge or creating a platform to strike off of and there are longer sticks that u can brace and use leg stregnth to push a longer flake used for thinning a thicker piece down. There are other techniques and methods but thats what i started with(you have to start some where) You can drop me a pm if you want and i would be glad to show you if you not to far away ...winter is pretty long here in wny.
  22. Didn't know the state wanted to make people happy...
  23. Dan Long attends the knappin at letchworth i learned from him, and jack holland, the glass is nice to work with but the natural stone is a lot harder to pressure flake and flute, i have snapped a lot of points in two trying to flute them(usually make small points out of the remainders) obsidion is just as easy as glass, i've seen some great glass points made with copper tipped pressure flakers(i learned with one as well) but have tried to use antler for pressure, and a moose horn bur, and granite stone for precussion. Gives me a lot of respect for the primiative indian trying to survive..
  24. I stick with a mossberg 835, 3 1/2 in mag.
  25. Pat, you need to get age on deer before you could bait them in to determine size...right now 90% or more of what u would see will be 1 1/2 years
