  1. Look for tax sales from each county, large properties tend to go. Pretty inexpensive , drawback is funds are usually due in 30 days with a deposit down at time of auction. . Penny savers local papers are a good source as well as drives down coubtry road for sale by owners..
  2. Ive killed more deer walking solo, many times bumping them a little and shooting them as they attepmt to escape. Thick cover is best for this as is a short gun.
  3. Up early today 330, look out window and see deer silhouettes out in the small corn field, snow still falling looks like a few inches on the car from last night. Glad im inside. Moon is crazy bright through the clouds. Look lik sno ending about 5 am.. maybe ill go out a track one this am
  4. Having close stateland around and my own private , the determing factor for deer and heard health is simply habitat. A plave that is safe , provides sufficient food/ nutrition is the biggest factor for age of a herd. Unfortunately we are constantly compared to other states that have short gun seasons, and far fewer hunters. Not a apple to apple.comparison. the best we can do here is create sanctuarys , do an honest accessment of nutrition and habitat needs and attempt.to limit take on private land within the regulations and permits issued in a wmu. Far to many time i hear well there were deer everywhere 10 or 15 or 20 years ago.. ive hunted same spot for years.. the brushy draw you once hunted is now mature timber. The brushy thucket that was bedding is now grown into pole timber.. deer are creatures of edge and successional habitat. It take work and a good management plan to get the most out of your property.. i am.always accessing what a properrt lacks and try to address it .many times its a long range solution sucj as thermal winter cover. It can be done it just take some work and you may need to recruit help if your on a budget , if this means opening your land to others for manpower so be it, set some rules or guidelines and do it!!
  5. I dont care.about your hickory tree , the question is why do you feel a 2 week.fall.turkey season is worth hunting but not a 2 week crossbow season that falls during prime rut hunting.. do you comprehend what the question is?? Its not about hickory trees a state away
  6. They do have plans in place like in hanging bog where they clearcut 50 acre.parcles every year. The patchwork creates great grouse ,deer and turkey habitat. Unfortunately state parks are not in a managemant plan. They have used funds raised from timber cutting to replace culverts and road and trail maintenance. As for planting a food plot not gonna happen but browse is prefered anyway. Look for wma to hunt in after opening weekend they are sparcly used.
  7. Ypu didnt explain your logic at all. As for the hickory i am.nor ever was fit to be tied ,just trying to understand your logic when xbow has best 2 weeks for season now and you dont think twice about a 2 week Turkey season
  8. I dont understand, you. Go all out for the shortened 2 week fall turkey season, can currently use crossbow during the best 2 weeks of rut , but wont consider it unless its in whole season. That logic would mean you shouldnt fall turkey hunt unless the season was put back to oct 1 as it once was.. this isnt an attack i just dont see a difference logically.
  9. Those are numbers from 2019 Still waiting for you to tell me using these numbers why 1 buck will make a huge difference in our buck and age structure?? Habitat and shortening seasons would do a lot more or closing hunting season completely perhaps ... these archer swhis state wide success rate is lower than 10 % buck and doe harvest( includingnbuttons and fawns) are killing all the buck?
  10. Ok. Here are numbers 65 k antlered buck shot during gun in southern zone gun last year 30 k antlered buck in southern zone during archery last year , so your telling me 30 k archers are taking 2 buck so 30 k of the 65 k shot in gun are 2 buck takers.. the number is statistically low. Or there are just a lot of bad hunters out there. Do you really think 2 buck is a problem ??? Is your whole worry some one shot a buck and you didnt see one? Most hunter i know and have seen that get two buck. Are usually shooting mature buck for both. And spend a lot of time in the woods. A lot of time scouting and even more on prep.. Seriously stop watching hunting shows that are on private ranches with 1 hunter per square mile.
  11. It killed the economy of many small towns as well as camp comroderie the weekend before. You visited neighboring camps , made.plans for drived later in the week, went into town for dinner and drinks, and supplies.
  12. Still no where near any number take 1 buck each, 560 k plus dont get one. We do not have a short gunseason like states with 1 buck limit and biologicaly its not necessary for reproduction. If you have hunted any legnth of time you should know how hard bowhunters paid extra and recieved no tag. , and like your 1 buck states most buck are now taken during archery. So either take up archery or crossbow pay more money anf get your buck if that is what bothers you so much. And the saying is pretty much true 10% kill 90% of game. Perhaps your assuming that out of 113 k buck taken 50 k hunters shot 100k of them? The success rate for archers is pretty low across the state ( you can google that if you want) not.many are taking 2 buck and not enough statistically to warrent a 1 buck rule at all. Look at oast changes hell before 91 you could take a buck on a party permit...
  13. Included in the new 5 year deer management plan is an appendix of changes made to our seasons and harvest limits.. for those of you that only read the cliff notes or havent hunted deer for a long time some of these may shock you.
  14. So explain how 650k hunters take 50k buck a year. What is one buck doing when 600 k. Go buckless anyway? Passing up deer voluntarily for an older age is best way. Making habitat better is a great way. If you read the proposal they list all the dates changes were made including the elimination of either sex extra permits you use to shoot buck on as well to antlerless only.. heck one buck and most hunter i know would be tagged out in archery and gun season would be a ghosttown with deer never leaving property of hunters who taggged out meaning less movent then their is already. Most deer would die of old age in good habitat. Only shooting 1 buck doesn't mean others will shoot them they dont get one now.
  15. Only a day or so if stored outside in dry place. Powder inherently draws moisture , you dont want to miss an opportunity with a hang fire or no fire...
  16. This is in referance to high population areas like 9f. If you had unlimited tags. What do you do with all the deer.. personally they would be better off giveing a tax credit for donation to food bank
  17. Only 60 k buck taken now with 650k hunters 1 buck isnt going to change anything. Less than 2 % now take 2 buck , as the saying goes 10% hunters take 90% of game... time and skill are what is needed to kill deer more than anything.
  18. I just do A skull cap and that can be covered with felt or leather. Neat way to display sheds
  19. Thats sad. Cause theve been around for centuries.. to bad. If they made spears legal id try it. I just saw a bow with 90% let off.. crazy.. kudos to the traditional archers.
  20. Have you shot or hunted with a xbow? if not your point is moot.. saw more guys blown up this year by being kept cocked . It needs to be archery course required , and if you read this proposal you see a ton of dtes archery allowed compounds, lighted pins, release, extra tag, traditional archers got screwed imo
  21. I have a freidn that shoots nearly all sept in west seneca on his nursery and they keep giving him more tags as he is very close to stiglemeyer park a d deer travel to his nursey to feed along the creek. Hes basically pop control for the park but if urban areas are opened for hunting he would have a lot less to shoot.
  22. Why move ar to other areas of state when they are not needed.. check out nyantler.com and look at the mature bucks being shot around the state with no ars. When deer get older they get smarter, i can have 5 mature buck on camera and we are lucky to kill 1 a year. More will just die of old age as most hunters are not skilled nor have enough time to consisitantly harvest them. As the saying goes 10 % of hunters kill 90% of the game.
