Steve I totally agree, they may think the dec is listening. I must admit if I saw a nice buck 10 min before or after the legal time I would shoot it too. As long as it was a clear shot and I could see through my scope or pee sight.Dave

Pygmy, by me it's already dark at 5:00pm. I usually start to leave my stand by 4:30 sih.Dave

Day Time

Antler did you ever hunt in the woods and the fog rolls in, not a good situation but it's legal hunting time. I have many times and have just been able to make out the legs of a deer so according to you I should shoot because it's legal hunting time. It is a decision to shoot or not to shoot depends on lots of things and good shooting light is the main concern. See your target and beyond and you can only do that if you have enough light. I don't recall many times that it isn't legal shooting light that I have seen deer.Dave

Doc there was another thread that was about traditions at deer camp and where I hunt and the surrounding clubs all follow this one. They get into the woods in the dark, try to be in stand about an hr before it gets light. To me shooting time would be, being able to see clearly at a target either through my scope or be able to line up my pin with a bow. I have never since 1968 looked at my watch before I shot at a deer. You simply don't have the time to fiddle around looking for what time it is. But I have looked at my watch when I hear the first shots on opening day especially if I think it is rather early and I can't make things out in the woods. Those shots to me are dangerous I feel if you have a hard time seeing then you will have a hard time finding the deer. I have had deer under my stand as light was fading and didn't shoot because I couldn't see them through my scope or get the pin on the deer. Though I could count them moving past, so I just sit till they are out of sight then I get out of my stand and head for home.Dave

Is it legal? No. If you would shoot....shame on you. Give me a break, it all sounds good or that's what you would like us to believe.Dave

What about those J hooks. They are usually rubber coated to last especially if you use the stand year after year. Takes only a minute to screw it into the tree. Dave -

For all the guys who hunt on state land it's 6:45 am and there it is the biggest buck you have ever seen but it's not 6:49 am the legal hunting time by just 4 minutes do you shoot or not? Be honest.Dave

I think you are right , I know a few hunters who never wear a watch. I personally never look at my watch before I take the shot and I don't think most hunters do either. If I can see 50 yards from my stand and a big buck comes by I will take the shot. I figure if I can see 50 yards and beyond it must be legal shooting time. I am in my stand in the dark and I leave it when it's dark.Dave

On Long Island we just had a covering on the lawns and cars. Didn't have any on the roads or sidewalks. All melted by end of the day. Dave

Illegal is illegal, friend. I would take no joy in killing a nice 8pt illegally.....or any deer, for that matter. I know it is illegal. It was a question what would you do in this situation.Dave
-
Question you see a buck clear as day 50 yards from your stand. You put him in your sights and he is a nice 8pt. But wait it's not legal shooting time, what do you do? Dave
-
often had that same thought especially on opening day. There are only so many bucks in a given area and you hear many shots. Does that mean all the bucks have been killed? Are my chances for success diminished because of the shots I have heard? Or are they shooting at does to fill dmp? No one really knows for sure but it does put some negative thoughts in ones head. Something to contemplate!! Dave

I think any obsticels you put on hunters will hurt hunting in general. With the numbers going down with out any new regulations adding a refresher would only encourage some hunters to give up on the sport all together. Why hunt if there is refresher courses , antler restrictions, increased fees for dmp's and increases in hunting license fees. The only one to benefit is the STATE. Dave

Guy's just remember more people get injured or die playing football every year. I could add more sports to the list but it would be too long. Hunting is much safer than just about any other sport. But just have one hunting accident and its on the News. Look at how many people die driving every year about 40,000 per year where is the outrage? Dave

DEC Formulating Their "5 Year Deer Management Plan"
Dave replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
I hunt in 4W and this past season I saw more does than I have seen in awhile. But we saw few bucks, Where are the bucks? Our gang has about 450 acres what we can hunt and not much to show for it. Saw two 6tp bucks during bow season and my brother shot one in gun season. I took a doe in bow but that's it for about 13 hunters. We don't shoot does in our club and neither do the people around us. Also we don't shoot spikes and this had been our policy for many years. Dave -
I have make many venison stews all in crock pots and the meat melts in your mouth. Weather I slow cook it for 8 hrs or 10 hrs the result is the same. I don't believe you can over cook in the crock pot. Dave

Thought this was a hunting site!!! Lets stick to what this site was developed for. What does martial arts have to do with hunting? Dave -
The crocus are popping up on Long Island and the Daffadil stems are starting to push up through the ground. Robins have been here all winter. Starting to hear the birds singing in the early morning spring can't be far behind. All the snow is gone!!!!!!!!! Dave
