take a look at the remington pump action carbines.. Iv3e had mine for years, they come with like an 19 inch barrel, which makes the overall gun very compact

I have one and love it. After several years of hunting and several guns, I have found this one to be best for me here in NY.

Mine is the synthetic version and the barrel is 18.5".

Those Remington pumps have a reputation of being dependable and accurate. They are very popular in Pennsylvania..

Only one problem with the short barrel..It is LOUD !! Muzzle blast is distictly louder than a 22" or 24" barrel, especially in the '06 or .270.

Agree ... Those Remmy pumps are real good, if you can find one. A friend has an old one in .35 Rem. I've been offering to buy it off him for the past 20 years...he wont sell it. I'll keep trying

Haven't heard anyone mention the 25-06 yet. Great gun, light recoil, tack driver, and affordable for new hunters. Check out the H&R single shot. Can probably get the gun topped with 3-9 Leupold for under $500 with tax. Just a thought...

My first deer rifle was a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. That was 22 years ago and it's still my first choice. Now with the new Hornady Flex Tip rounds you can reach out to 300 yards if you had to. But for a brush/woods gun .35 is a very solid choice. Like others have said the .35 is better than the 30/30. In my opinion I think the .35 rem is the ideal rifle for the woods and brush of NY.

When we hunted the state land near the Delaware river,Most of the fellows that were walkers carried a 35 marlin.The liked them because they were good for deer and bear.

The .243 is a great starter gun for deer season it's a good gun in general. And im pretty sure you can get a nice .243 a lot cheaper than say a 30-30 lever action. Goodluck with your choice.
