Anybody mess with a 25-06 for deer? I have a Sako 25-06 Remington inbound and I'm looking for load suggestions.

Crunched some deer sized game with 120gr A-frames.

Hit hard and can mash some bone from any angle.

Just sayin'.

Traded my 25-06 barrel for a scope mount and spare bolt......maybe I need another;<)

Dan...Other: AV hunter, left hand. Wood (yikes!) stock. Looks to be a good value but all I've seen is pics, actually made the deal without seeing the pics first. Took a flyer on a weak moment the other night and am hoping for the best. <<grin>>

120 A Frame wouldn't be a bad idea if furry black critters were lurking and a tag was in hand. Hmmmm......

Larry...The 25-06 is an azz kickin' round for deer...The only thing I have against it is you need a 24" BBL to realize it's potential...I had one in a Ruger M77 Tang safety and it was a shootin' SOB.

115 or 120 grain bullets work fine, but with bullets that heavy it is basically just a .270.. Not that there is anything WRONG with a .270, but if you want to ELECTROCUTE deer, go with tough, light for caliber bullets, like the 90 or 100 grain Barnes or Nosler BT... They shoot straight, kick little, and drop deer like lightning as far as you might want to shoot them.

P.s. I'll check my loading log and let you know what worked for me when I had my .25 ought...

Next barrel for my Encore is going to be a quarter bore....just haven't decided which one. I am leaning this way though.

Here is my data from my encore. 115 grain nosler partition bullet 52.4 grain Imr 4831 26 inch barrel cci large rifle primers and winchester brass. length just off the lands. About 3200 fps. Deadly accurate and deadly. My only advice is to stay away from non premium bullets. They tend to fragment a lot more at the higher speeds. For example I started out using 117 grain sierra game kings. I shot a nice doe at 167 yards nice quarter sized entrance through the ribs and tore the opposite shoulder off all but a piece of hide holding it on. The should was not salvageable at all. I shot the nicest buck I have ever gotten an 8 point weighing 197 2 days after being shot with the above load. he went 20 yards and piled up. Quarter sized entrance a little bigger exit and lungs were mush. It rapidly became my go to rifle for deer. Go with IMR 4831. It was developed for the 270 and 25-06 if you plan to reload.

Thanks bubba. Sounds like you and Pygmy both had good results. Yes, I'll be reloading for it, that's the best part of a new gun IMO!

It'll could be a week or two before it is here. Then I'll need to source some rings for the unique dovetailed receiver on Sako rifles. As for a scope, I have two available in mothballs right now. A varix II 2-7 and a varix III 2.5-8. I think the second one will go on it until I can come up with a smokin' deal on a varix III 3.5-10.

The hunt is on now for dies (Redding or RCBS) brass and bullets. I'll be so cash poor I won't be able to afford paper targets...........<<grin>>

Leupold has a rebate starting for the 40 and 50 diameters in that vx III scope.........$80 IRRC.

I have never even shot this round but an old timer who hunts property near ours has been using a 25-06 for a while, and he drops deer ( at a distance) all the time. His is a bolt gun ....I think its a Win. 70. Knowing him he just shoots the cheapest factory ammo. So hand loads would be that much better..

I never played around with many powders...The 25-06 is a classic overbore cartridge and typically does well with slow burners...My first loads were with 117 and 120 grain boattails and H4831 and shot sub MOA. I think I was burning 52 grains.

Later I went to 100 grainers with the same powder, and they also shot sub MOA a couple hundred FPS faster and also seemed to have a more dramatic effect on the game....I'll look up the charge and get back to you. I sold the rifle before I got into Barnes bullets, but I'll bet a 90-100 grain Barnes TTSX at around 3300 FPS would be a winner..

I've never shot a 25-06 and you could count all the 30-06 rounds I've shot on two hands, all at the bench for my father.

270 & 280 are a different story as I had a Rem 700 LH 270 and a Rem LH KS 280 that have both had plenty of rounds sparked down the barrel. Killed enough deer and a few antelope to fill a couple Tacoma's to capacity!

Must be something about lefties and the 25-06. My crooked(lefty) shooting father has been shooting and swearing by that round for 40 yrs. Whenever he tells people he shoots a 25, people just always seem to nod and grin. It's a sweet ride...A memory i will never forget was watching a big mulie in my binos as Dad drilled him from 300 yrds. I could see the impact clearly as the deer popped all fours off the ground and went down. He scrambled to his feet, only to make it another 40yrds and it was over. I can still hear that crack of the rifle going off in that Rocky Mountain canyon. Good memories. He has always been fond of the Rugers.

I have the H&R ultra hunter in 25-06 that I bought about 12 years ago. Topped it off with the 4-12 VXII. Don't shoot it much, but enjoy smoking some chucks with it every summer. I shoot Hornady's 75 grain v-max and can cover the group with a dime at 100 yards (factory loads). Probably only put 40 rounds through it, but man is it sweet!
