First-light
We had hell of a weekend. Bucks were still in bachelor groups. We saw a total of 6 does and get this 9 bucks. My brother took the only shot and missed a 6pt Saturday morning. I did not see a deer all day Saturday. My brother saw a few doe and two bucks in the morning and saw a button buck and another buck in the evening. Sunday morning was awesome. I had deer by my stand from first light. A couple of does and two small bucks. Could of shot any of them but will wait for Mr. big (he comes later). When I left the cabin and looked back at my clover field and on the skyline was a nice buck just looking at me. I knew it would be a good morning. 7:30 and I get a text that my brother is watching 4 bucks cross the same field. They are headed my way and he says the last one is real big. I never see these deer but I do hear them off to my left coming through the woods. At one point two of the bucks start sparring with each other and I can hear the horns rattling. I never do see them. It was about 10:00 and across the field from where I am set up I hear a branch break. This area is real thick with blowdowns, the deer love it. Well I know something is over there and I wait. Out comes a buck very grey looking with a decent rack, it was very tall. Behind him was the deer we all look for. It was another very grey big looking deer. He was a 10 point with sweeping beams and long tine length. He was perfect on both sides. They are about 50-60 yards from me, heading towards me but a bit high up the hill to shoot. The lead buck turns towards me and starts heading my way and stops. He decides to go into my pines and cross just below another stand I have up. I was going to get in that stand but decided at the last minute to move further down the hill, go figure. I watched as they moved off into the bedding area on my property. I did not catch either of these two bucks on my cam. He is huge, big body and if I had to guess a 150 class buck. I put a cam out when we left today to see if this is a normal routine. I kind of like this early season opener!!! I hope to have another encounter with him soon!!!

First-light
Headed up to camp tomorrow afternoon with my brother. We will be staying until Monday and hope to bag something this weekend. Weather looks good, slightly warm mid 50's but cool mornings. The place is overrun with bucks this year, the rubs are everywhere. I would like a crack at a doe this weekend and of course Mr. big. Little bucks get a pass. I am going to have some people tagging along with me Thanksgiving weekend and the weekend after that. Hope to save my doe tag for those weekends. Good luck everyone! First-light
Just got back in from the most exciting three day hunt I have ever had! I was at camp with my brother this weekend. Weather was great and the game was abundant! Saturday morning I saw 6 doe, 4 buck, 4 bear and 1 coyote!!! Two doe came by my stand around 7 and a big buck was following in the thick brush. He was grunting the whole time and stunk of the rut. I didn't get a shot but saw him for a few minutes and could tell it was the tall buck from two weeks ago. around 8 a sow and three cubs came through and they were moving, something was bothering them. A yote came by with a haircut my brother gave him! lol. About 10:30 I got down and made a mock scrape about twenty yards above my stand. When I got back in around 2 I freshened it up with doe and buck pee. So what do you think happens??? At 2:10 a black bear comes down to the scrpe and is licking and pawing at the dirt, never saw this before. He was small about 100lbs. I didn't shoot, just watched. Well he came back 3 times in the next two hours. At one point he was right under my stand smelling the scent trail. He was acting real odd. About 5:30 I see black in the brush from wher the small bear was coming and going, it wasn't him but his big brother. He didn't come to the scrape by was bent on following the trail made by the sow and cubs. He was about 30 yards out and I got full draw on him and he winded me. I never saw a bear move so fast. It was an amazing day. My brother had an extra video camera with him and gave it to me before the afternoon hunt and I forgot it at the cabin. Would of made some nice video. I see a nice buck Sunday morning but nothing in the afternoon. My brother sees some deer but no shots. We did notice that the deer were feeding in the middle of the afternoon in the field behind my cabin. They were out Sat-Mon afternoon around 1 each day. A couple-three doe each day. This morning did not end the way I wanted it to. I had a broken rack 8 pt come in at 20 yrds. I settled the pin on his chest and hit him very low in the brisket. Little blood on the fletchings but a lot of white hair. He bled real good for about 100 yards and then it was on and off. We tracked that deer for 4 hrs. He actually went by a number of scrapes and rubs and never bedded down. He finally started to clot and it got real spotty then eventually stopped. We both talked about the lack of bedding down and the scrapes he was visiting maybe it didn't bother him too much. Don't know but I'm sure he is fine. The bears were amazing, their numbers are growing in 8P. While tracking the deer we went through some real thick pines and there was bear scat everywhere. Will be back up in two weeks. The smaller bucks seem to not respond to much calling or scent. That one big buck was all rutted up, he was ready! Won't be long now!! dave6x6
Nothing beats hunting at camp.. Team Legend needs to quit drinking in the stand though. 3 shots-3 misses.
First-light
Dave I know we suck but it was two misses. Too much buck fever going around, lol.

steve863
Burt, I really think me and Doe need to come up there again and cull some of those deer for you. Seems like you are overrun with deer up there. We'd be more than happy to help you out!!
dave6x6
Sorry Burt, i thought i read a coyote with a haircut and two bucks that got spared. I've yet to get down to our camp in 9p but hope the action is half as good as ya'll are having at your place. I'm sure there will be some blood spilled soon. I also think it's mighty big to open your place up to people of all walks of life and even let them shoot your deer when your not there. Looking forward to the pics of Doe and Steve's successful hunt.
Doewhacker
Dave its an ongoing joke that Steve and I hunt Burts place when he isn't there, with out permission..lol

dave6x6
yea, i've read about that in the past. LOL . And he doesn't even get mad or anything. Women and African are both welcome at his place.
First-light
I am cracking up in my office right now! You guys are too funny. Yes we need to bring the kill average up, that's why the kid I mentored comes back every year, he won't miss.
steve863
See, we knew that Burt was a democrat, thus we knew he would be open to having Africans on his property. We knew not to even bother with a typical redneck hunter, because we knew we'd never be welcome. LOL He welcomes everyone. Blacks, women, the disabled, you name it. I can just see some of the redneck hunters here putting a bullet thru their foot and then claiming a disability just to get invited to hunt Burt's red hot hunting property! Wouldn't pass it by them. LOL
