irish_redneck
Hi there So I took the time to read my safety instructions on the new Viper SD XXX Climber I picked up, it states not to use on trees with loose or slippery bark, or on trees coated in ice, all logical statements. It then proceeded to say not to use in the rain... or to use hang-ons in the rain either. I've used hang-ons in the rain for years, but with this being my first climber thought I should ask your opinion on use. Is this a liability clearing statement rather than an official policy? Surely a climber must be ok to use in the rain / after the rain, otherwise thee'll be very very few days I can actually use this thing. Opinions please

132 eight pointer
I have never heard not to use a hang-on stand in the rain.Any smooth bark tree is dangerous with a climber especially when wet..I will be sitting in a hang-on this evening (hopefully) rain or shine with safety harness attached. ants
I have 2 summit vipers that I have been using for the past 12 years. On one occasion, while climbing up, the seat slid down about 3-4". It was a real hard smooth tree that was wet. Just make sure the seat is biting down good into the tree before you put all your weight on it. deerpassion
Just make sure u take the time to put ur weight on it n sink the teeth in before moving one or the other... I have the open shot n love it.. Took a file to the teeth n put a little better point on em, they bite real well now even on smooth slippery stuff... biggamefish
I have the summit open shot. Great stand. Use it all the time. Any climber you have to be careful in smooth barked trees. Just use common sense

virgil
Probably just a disclaimer that they include to avoid responsibility if anyone gets hurt.
irish_redneck
That was my guess. Thanks for all the input. How do you guys manage all your gear in the climber? Dont really wanna be screwing things in and out of random trees. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
Fletch
I have no issues with my API climber except on one kind of tree around here and it has rock hard smooth bark. I take my backpack with me and I try to climb trees with other trees in a clump to block me, if so I just hang on the tree right next to me. If not I hang above and behind me on the tree I climbed. Not as easy to access but works. My stand also has a bag that hangs from it I can put a couple things in. And newbreed that is a nice job on that stand! What does it weigh? moog5050
Agreed. Very nice newbreed. I had similar concerns since I weigh a few more lbs than you, but went with the Goliath. Working good so far.
NYbuck50
stay off of the birch trees and find one with some bark, you'll be ok
