New to reloading

hey guys im thinking of getting into reloading and am just wondering what you guys think of the hornady lock-n-load classic kit.... natchezss shooters supplys has it for 259.99 plus a mail in rebate for 500 free bullets from hornady, is this a good kit for a starter like me? (i no ALMOST nothing about reloading) here is the link:

That looks like a good kit for a good price. I use mostly RCBS components, but Hornady stuff should be nice. Just remember to start at the low range of what the manual shows for powder requirements and work your way up. You'll love reloading.

the main reason im looking at this one is cause it comes w the dies and some other nice stuff the rcbs rock chucker supreme master kit dosent plus im to cheap to pass up on 500 free bullets... LOL

and i like hornady

THis is what I bought to start at the begining of the year. Love it. I am reloading 38 sp, 357, 223 Rem, 270 Win, 308 Win and 30-06 sprg,I can switch calibers in about 2 minutes. and can load pistol rounds at about 150 an hour. Pifle I load in single stage operations but I never have to adjust my dies because of the turret set up, unless i switch bullets.

Oh forgot...brass, bullets, primers and powder....step one is read...read...then read some more before you start. It isn't hard to do it is just detailed and you shoulndn't be distracted when doing it.

Wow thanks!!! Looks like I can get into the hobby for $4-$500 to start with the extras you listed, it would pay for itself rather quickly with the cost of ammo and a whole family of shooters. I bet I have spent at least that much over the last year on ammo. When I get home I will make my wish list and start aquiring supplies.

as far as i can see this is whats included in the kit....

mostly the stuff that i dont REALLY need is not included.......... i was thinking of the rcbs kit but im cheap and want the free bullets, i already have two friends commited to buying from me.... so i very well might get it

RCBS is good stuf from what I am told. I liked the turret system and the ability to change caliges and not have to adjust dies. I am loading pistol and rifle and it was the best compromise for me.

Go on youtube and watch a few videos of the different presses in operation. that will give you a feel for how each operation goes. I found that helpful.

You'll likely want to buy powder &primers locally as there's a hazardous material charge on top of shipping.

I've started trying out Midsouth Shooters Supply. Prices seem competitive but I've only placed one order so far.

i still cant decide...... i dought i will reload over 100 rounds per yr per guy unless we buy or find some more brass, we are not big shooters just mostly hunters... (between us all this yr we used about 20 rounds of ammo, mostly me missing deer lol) any fresh opinions? i like the option of buying everything in one kit also, i dont wanna buy everything seperate... another thing if i would wanna reload more do most shooting ranges have brass that i could get for cheap or for free? also where is a good place to get powder primers ect would, gander mountain, dicks sporting goods or herb phillipsons have it? i do my shopping in watertown if that helps.....

The thing to consider is that with the turret style reloading machine, you never have to reset dies, etc. You install them into the plate and swap out plates (one for each caliber) as needed. Simplifies things. You can get most of what you need in a kit, then separate dies and plates for each different caliber. Its right here...

You are still going to need dies, bases, etc for the lock and load kit as well, and the Lee setup is less money to start with.

Your decision in the end, but I personally think youd be making a mistake with the lock and load kit.

The only time you would have to adjust a die with the turret is if you change bullet type.....might fit the seating die differently....or you want to change the OAL for a specific gun. I run the 4 hole turret because I like having the full length sizing die and neck sizing die all set up. I only use one or the other depending on the gun but I don't have to add it then.

Adjusting a die for different bullet types is pretty quick if you make up a dummy round for each bullet type. Just back off the seater, put it in the dummy round and lightly screw down the seater until you feel it touch. Should put you within a few thousanth's of the overall length on the first try.
