BaldguyLee
Hi, people. Silly question here. Aside from memory, what's an easy way to remind myself which choke tube is in my shotgun? I switch up on different trips, but I find myself looking at which chokes are left, to know which one must be in my gun. Any quick and easy tips ? Thanks. --Lee
Lawdwaz
I thought all chokes (at least mine do for my Rem and Benelli) have notches on the top and you just have to know what they designate. PS......I think my Rem's do? Its been awhile.............. What gun are using?
Lawdwaz
And......a very simple way to tell if it a full or IC would be to just look at the thickness of it when it is installed and flush with the top of the barrel. Crud but I've done that before in a pinch.
Lawdwaz
I just checked my Remington chokes and they are not notched like I thought. Dremel is the answer...........!!
Early
I, too, forget which choke is in my gun....No problem to back it out just far enough to read the writing on it. No choke tool....use a quarter.
BaldguyLee
My gun is a Mossberg 500. I'll buy all extended chokes in the future, since they mostly have something written on the outside, but the ones that came with the gun are flush. waterweasle
winchester used to have dots on the edges of the choke to tel you what they were, all the chokes I have for my 870 tell you right on the side of it what choke it is
Early
The notch and dot systems for identifying choke tubes are worthless if one forgets the system.
ants
The chokes for my 870 come in plastic tubes, like pill bottles. If I forget which one is in the gun, I just see which of the tubes are empty in the gun locker.
dirt_a_KISS
What shotgun are you using?
jr.deerslayer
I just checked my Remington chokes and they are not notched like I thought. Dremel is the answer...........!! Browning shotguns use the notches.
Pygmy
My Browning choke tubes and my Remington choke tubes both have the choke stamped on the side of the tubes. The Brownings also have notches to indicate the choke when it is installed in the barrel. Edited January 13, 2013 by Pygmy
BaldguyLee
Yeah, I may just notch ( very slightly ) my chokes. Thanks everyone.
adkbuck
I have a polychoke on one of my shotguns and love it especially for bird hunting under varying conditions. I don't know why they are no langer popular. They are still very much in business: http://www.poly-choke.com/ Lee, with other shotguns I always put a small piece of colored duct tape on the bbl marked with with a sharpee to remind me of what choke I have installed. I also keep a hunting/shooting log and record any changes made to a firearm. Edited January 14, 2013 by adkbuck
Pygmy
Polychokes and other adjustable choke devices are very functional...Just yesterday I admired a Browning A-5 Light Twelve with a solid rib and a Cutts Compensator. How ever, many shooters just don't care for the big bulge on the end of the muzzle. Ever try to sell a shotgun with a polychoke on it ? It's like the kiss of death. Nothing will reduce the resale value of a quality vintage shotgun like a Win Model 12 or a Browning A-5 quicker than a polychoke.

Five Seasons
pretty sure my mossberg 835 has the type engraved.
josephmrtn
i can screw mine out w my fingers and check.... (of course my fingers are smaller than yours) my XX-Full turkey sticks out the end of the barrel so i can tell...
Uncle Nicky
I usually double check first that the gun is unloaded, then I stick my pinky down the barrel. The farther down I can get my finger, the more open the choke. I make it a point to mark all chokes with a permanent marker that don't come that way from the factory so I'm not guessing if I'm in the dark or in a hurry. birdman
I use HEVIShot choke tubes. They are extended so it is easy to read which tube is in the gun. They pattern really well too.
