opening day deception!

So opening morning starts off with the usual gobble or two first thing unprompted... There is a big ravein and a creek seperating myself and another hunter ( who def favors a box call ) we'll see who wins... So me and the other hunter as light progresses exchange a battle of the hens which both made em gobble countless times... It's just a matter of which side of the revein they decide to pitch down to... Well my fellow public hunter proceeds to wail away insistently as I think "u better tone it down some or ur screwed"! Gobbling shuts off, I wait for him to quit , and start in on my own, boom , immediately fire back up, multiple birds.... 6:05 rolls around and I see a hen in the timber , then two.... I make a few short cuts to see if I can get em talkin to pull these toms over my way and outa the corner of my eye I see four white heads at 60! Now, I'm leaned against a huge white oak fall with another at 90 degrees to it... I can only turn my head and eyes so far without moving and I see def three jakes and one struttin his a$$ off for two hens.... So the three jakes commit to the deaks, and can bailey see the strutted outa my periphery... He starts comin in and "game on" .... Now the three jakes are talkin $hit to my deaks and this strutter ducks behind this other big oak fall, sticks his head up n BOOM !!! Walk over and it's just a really BIG jake! Damnit.. Guess my contest is shot, but I've got some delicious turkey soup a brewen on opening day so I can't bitch... Good luck to all still in the contest, didn't even bother entering a jake.... But here's a pic ....

Exactly. Write up your card and take the pics of the beard and spurs, you never know!

Congrats!

i'd be more than happy to, but i don't wanna infringe on the rules ... i don't have the full bird, already in the crock pot for soup ( and yes grow, some FINE eaten ahead :) )  so i technically don't have the pic of the full bird with the contest card and the tag... have the beard, spurs, tag , and the card just not the whole bird... ??? what's your ruling sir?

One vote Aye. Clearly shown full bird this morning...he's got the parts.

ya man , my dam eye was twitchen so hard to see the beard etc. but all i could see was him struttin his but off for 15 minutes outa my side view they were so close... so i figured the others were the tag alongs and when he stuck that head up over that fallen oak " it was just like the whitest osceola tom i ever shot" ( grew up huntin in florida , tough bird to learn on lol...)  nice bonus though, dam jakes are as big as our 4 year olds down there... lotta good meat!!!!!!!!

and thanks for your vote

Most FL turkey hunters I know generally do well when they come up here. Easterns are much more vocal and the subtle calling technique the FL boys use works better here than the "call at will" most hunters employ in NY.

Wow thats a nice, bird. Are you going back out there?

naaa, tomorrow im tryin a spot down at canadaway... figured i got one out a the way, why not try out my other homework... see what happens,,, no offense guys, but some of (well most of the hunters up hear) call toooo damm much!!!!!!   glad i grew up on osceolas which are the most finicy least vocal suns a b's out there... yelping, haaaa, maybe two or three the whole morning, rest is clucks n purrs , especially on public land!  so i enjoyed myself alot today gettin a little agressive with some easterns, :) thank you NY !

P.S. dirt_a _kiss... you with the long bed or that stellar bumper job , haha... took a stroll past to see if you were still out on my way out....?  made it to my final with time to spare, couldn't a gone any better ...

As long as you can measure the beard and spurs, and get pics of those thats ok. We had a couple like that last year. You dont need the tape measure on the full bird. The tag needs to be shown as well. Make sure to include the above pic of you with the bird as well.

No problem, rather see you enter it and keep things interesting in the contest. I tell ya one thing, if I get a jake in front of me this year, Im laying him out. I have yet to pop my turkey cherry.

Agreed. Ive popped the cherry...but its been 3 years since i flopped one. Lookout jakes! I need a turkey sandwich!

Dead is dead...no need playing down the success. And, you were on public land, no? That's even more impressive beating out another hunter.

not knockin success man, i'll take it, it was a hell of a morning. down in south florida public is all you got, as well as the most dam finicky birds out there... but you certainly learn through trial and error over the years thats for dam sure...  i'll see if i can upload what i have left of it on my gopro which froze up just before the jakes swarmed my deak and the shot!  left the semi-open backdoor on it for better vocals, but i guess what little moisture was in the air messed with it , which i didn't think it was that bad this morning. pretty perfect morning if you ask me... but anyhow.... u'll clearly hear the other hunter's "box" probly 3 to 4 hundred yds away, but at that distance i almost welcome that, guaranteed they are far enough away and my calling is better than his that morning lol (diaphram)... had more luck messing with natural hens back n forth for the gobler to get mad or interested "chick fight" , hey , hey little ladies .... my calling to me seems a bit distorted in the video, but probly cause its on my head and too loud... would love to film or be filmed sometime... (minds OUT the gutter please :)  )
