Lawdwaz
I'm in a slump and need help! I blew it again yesterday. I worked a bird (s) for 90 minutes, moving three times to get them comfortable enough to commit. I was set up for the shot and they were inside of 60 yards and still out of sight but gobbling real strong. If they came straight in like I had it written up, all would be good because the gun was up and on my knee. Well, the pricks didn't read the plan and went silent for three or four minutes then the adult gobbled at 3:00 off my right shoulder. I dropped the gun to my lap and before I could swing over, I spotted the fan coming, soon followed by the blue head. Then, all of a sudden here come two jakes, straight at me, son of a B...... Now I'm in trouble. The gun is on my lap, pointing towards the Boss and the jakes are closing fast. The Boss goes behind a big tree but I can't pull up because the jakes are at 15 yards and all eyes.......... Ok, letting the big boy keep coming until he is totally in the clear and close then just pulling up and shooting fast is my only move. The jakes are standing and starring at me and now the adult is too, he is 30 yards, maybe...... I make my smooth move; pull up and shoot. Swing and a miss. My gut hurts from this, twice in a season, twice in my years as a turkey hunter. So, what do you guys recommend, red dots (where I'm leaning) scopes or fiber optic sights? Practice with my standard beads? Golf or fishing? Let me have it, I'm all ears and can take a public beating and it IS warranted,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
deerpassion
All I can say is it happens, but the big no no u made right off the bat is taking the gun off ur knee.. I'm sure it's no news to u but once u put that gun in ur lap ur stuck! When there in that close even if he is now to your right, doesn't mean he's not gonna work out in front of you at some point, especially with the jakes out in front of u... U can still pick the gun off ur knee and swing... It's happened to me before but when they come in silent n gobble right next to u when ur snoozing... Gotta love it ... TeeBugg
Gotta agree. Gun in the lap was a killer. Keep at em!
Lawdwaz
But, but.........I was going to swing my legs over after I dropped the gun and THEN bring the gun back up on a knee but he appeared out of the shadows & fog. <grin> I ain't looking for shoulda, woulda or coulda............just sympathy and a little feedback on optical crutches for FU's. Happy Memorial Day and thank you for your service if you served.
Deerthug
Sorry for your misfortune dude. At least you had them come in. I had one gobbling at 90 yds and hung up yesterday morning. Got it on video though!
landtracdeerhunter
Nah, it happens. Shake it off! That box of shells has this years date on it, right?
Lawdwaz
Nah, it happens. Shake it off! That box of shells has this years date on it, right? You know the funny thing is, yesterday morning I stuffed a Remington in the chamber and the two remaining Federal's in the magazine. The Rem's don't shoot near as good as the Fed's but I won't blame it on that. (This time!)AND I'll update the box this Friday at noon. ants
S... happens. If you could predict 100% of the time what the bastards will do, it wouldn't be any fun. Im no pro but I've been at it for a while. I think once the gun is up leave it there. They seem to just appear sometimes and if the gun is up at least its already shouldered and you have one less move to make if you decide to pull a quick shot. You still had a better day than me. I hunted the same area that was full of gobbles, the day before yesterday, but today not a sound..... 4 more days...
Pygmy
Tom Kelly said it best...I don't have my autographed copy of " The Tenth Legion" close at hand, but here's the quote " Or words to that effect." " Every minute you are in contact with an adult gobbler, events are occuring, any one of which can make the difference whether you win or lose ". I've missed my share over the years...Compost occurs... Mr. Murphy was most defintely a turkey hunter. The foliage in late season becomes problematic also..The woods are so dense that the bird has to come into JUST the right spot for you to shoot him, or even see him. I had two different gobblers so close this week that I could smell GRASSHOPPERS on thier breath, and both are still alive because I could not see them due to heavy foliage. Five Seasons
I missed early on too man. Happens and it sucks. I was thinking of getting one of those mad max blinds. they're a rest and cover and set up in seconds. Edited May 28, 2013 by Belo

Water Rat
Try the fiber optics sights. Sometimes the failures are more memorable than the successful hunts. That's why we love spring turkey hunting.
