CuseHunter
Any insight on the Brookfield hunting WMA. I am trying to find a spot to camp for 3 days and hunt. Curious to see what the deer population is like in that area. Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to message me if you have any info that you'd like to keep private
phade
Used to hunt a bit around Utica. Lots of turkey in spots. Why not look at a drive to Letchworth...its really built for your needs at the moment. camping and hunting. Good deer to be had too with a little digging. bowaholic
Tons of deer down in Brookfield! Big woods too, most of it is pretty thick but the pines are pretty open. The deer get a lot of pressure in some areas. One day with my buddy I almost stepped on a doe before she jumped in the thick stuff then a second later another deer jumped up and I could hear his rack hitting branches as he busted. Big old bucks way back in and if your not afraid to get in there for a couple days you have a good chance at one of them!

I think I'll have to make a good trip out of it with a buddy and bow hunt. Never tried bow hunting a place I haven't been and scouted a lot. Should be pretty hard. I just would hate to go to public land during regular season and see a woods full of guys

Might be a spot ill have to try out for myself muzzleloader or for the 2014 season.

SuperMag
I live in Ilion and i cannot think of any places where you would be able to camp around here. Most people hunt private land here.

So you are saying Brookfield is not a campable location? It seems very large. Anyone familiar with the location? I looked at the maps and it seems to be lots of access roads cutting through it, which for me would be bad as I want to walk some miles in and go to a spot to spend time where not many people venture
coonhunter
It is large, but is full of truck trails that are drivable until snow gets too deep. Bow season would be your best bet at not seeing a lot of people. You better check up on the regulations because I am not sure if there are any rules on camping. I can tell you there are lots of deer, but there are also a lot of people on the opener of gun season. After that first weekend, it is mostly people driving the roads and doing drives. Im sure there are places in brookfield to camp. I've personally never hunted there so i can't say for sure.
CuseHunter
Appreciate the feedback. Sounds like a decent place to go then. Definitely would pay off to do some scouting but the drive for me just wouldn't be worth it id say. I have a few local tricks up my sleeve for some seriously urban monsters. New York Hillbilly
My house and property are on the main road into Brookfield. About eight miles away. There are some big woods but surrounded by scattered parcels of private land. Access to the public land is pretty easy but you may have to park along the roads in a lot of places. Hunting pressure is mostly opening week then it dies down. The old days it was a war zone, and you had better find a wide tree for your back on opening day. Now days it has quieted down to the point of almost too quiet at times. Check the rules on camping so you don't get in trouble with the many conservation officers who police the area. Every year the sit at the end of my road and stop every body to check for violations. Although, the only ones who need worry about that are the dopes who like to try to get away with stuff, and they have it coming. Happy hunting, keep it safe!
