phade
I just don;'t get the "best" stand mentality. Sure, you have the best stand for the wind, for the entry/exit, for the time of year, etc. But there is no "best" stand to save because you hunt the best stand for the situation. You aren't saving anything. A rut funnel stand isn't a "best" stand now or in this situation. Just like an early season stand isn't going to be a "best" stand in early November. You may have a stand or two that see alot of action all season long, but again, it's probably not the best stand now because you burn ground, or have poor wind, etc. Hunt the best stand for the situation.
genesee_mohican
Just hunt the way you want and enjoy it. I agree, hunt the best stand for the situation and wind. Good advise for sure. I'm over fifty, 35 years of bow hunting. I don't claim to be an expert hunter in anyway, but I love it like nothing else. I work hard all year at it and save my precious time off so I can hunt like most guys on here. I'm blessed with having 15 stands up and dozens of places to hunt. I choose to hunt some of my stands now and to save some of my stands for later in the year. That's all. I'm not asking anyone else to hunt the way I do. I'm not saying you can't kill the biggest buck of your life on an 80 degree day. Hunt the way you want and have the time of your life! Doc
I have to admit that waiting for a deer with that little trickle of sweat running down your spine is not exactly the kind of hunting that I grew up with. Actually, it is downright disgusting.....lol. I did have the old mosquito thing going too. I was kind of wondering about this extra early start and had some misgivings about it. I know that in bowhunting not every shot ends with the picture perfect blood-trailing results. I have had a couple of gut shot deer where I decided that the prudent thing was to wait overnight rather than pushing them into an endless cat-and-mouse chase into the next township. But those occasions happened in sub-freezing weather and there was no sense of urgency. I just hope that one of those unfortunate hits doesn't occur while we are in this stretch of 80's. Being a state land hunter, the other thing that I have found out is that this weather has bumped up the activity levels of non deer hunting use. The bikers and hikers and now the target shooters has spiked. That is no fun to have someone set up a practice range right next to you and empty out box after box of ammo. As far as the deer moving, I don't think there is anyone arguing about that. I see lots of daylight movement on my cameras, but I don't think that is what the complaints are that I am reading here. phade
Oh I fully understand that. I'm not shooting does during the week because I won't take time off to process with my work schedule. A buck, I would burn that time as I won't be taking time off for the rut as a result. The problem I think most people who are raising the flag are saying that heat is making it not worth going out because of the deer movement rather than the indian's heat intolerance. Lucky, sometimes I wish I only had 15 stands to worry about/maintain/move. Once I hit 35 I stopped counting. I know I'm north of 40. Probably good that I don't know. vipertech
Heck, I like it better when it is warmer. I get no enjoyment from freezing my a$$ off. Then again, I do hate fighting with mosquitos but that's what a thermacell is for. If it is raining, I won't go. I want to enjoy my hunts, not endure them. blackradio
I got a lot of nice bucks on cam during the day this summer. Don't see why they wouldn't be moving now.
