Wow... people can admit that there have been a few cats in nys at some point in time recently, but when someone comes forth with a sighting they are immediatly liars... I do know the difference from a Bobcat and a Mountain Lion. Grow you even admit there may be a select few in the state at some point but you relate it to seeing a UFO?? I think the chances of seeing one are equivalent to winning the lotto.

The small world we live in, My guess is it was the tiger escaping from the zoo again in Argyle that you saw! (Jk)

But everyone don't forget about the mountain lion that went from SD to CT, unless he took a ferry or airplane, He had to cross through NY to get to CT.

Upstate, that was a certainly a thought, I don't know if they have ML in captivity there. I'm sure it would have made the news if one had indeed ecaped. If you know anyone from the Salem, East Geenwich ask them about sightings about 8-10 years ago. I wouldn't be suprised if you find someone who has heard about it, like I said it was in the Eagle.

I believe the cat that Buckandaquarter refers to was the one that was roadkilled in CT a couple of years ago.

That cat was linked to DNA samples found in Michigan, NY and possibly other places between here and the Dakotas, where it was thought to originate.

The main reason that people are so hesitant to believe cougar sighting stories is because such physical evidence is so very rare, and in most cases non-existant...

No trailcam picts ( other than the hoaxes such as the above picture)...No comfirmed tracks, kills, scat...NOTHING other than people saying they thought they saw a cougar.

Most of these people are not lying... They saw something that they thought was a cougar...Due to lack of hard evidence, I'd have to say that they were mistaken...

Here's an example... These stories have been going around for many years. Back when I was a kid, the cats that people saw were "panthers" and were nearly always black.

I was shown a picture by a good friend of mine of one such "black panther" wearing a collar, which he assumed was a tracking collar, presumably installed by the DEC spooks who are supposedly subversivly stocking these things. This man is a retired State Trooper and a very honest and rational man.

I looked at the photo...To me, it was obviuously a big black housecat wearing a red collar, somebody's PET.

Currently, eyeball witness accounts FAR outnumber cases where there is hard evidence...When the hard evidence starts to increase, I'll become a bit less skeptical of reports of cougars in NY.

The article states......" But some wildlife experts say there's a chance a small group of mountain lions lives in the state ".

Well ,well ,well,........how about that .

I personally don't know if I believe there are packs ( I don't know if that's what they are called or not) but I believe that we have cats like the one that was hit in CT that do roam into the area. We all know some who has seen this or that but what it really comes down to is either a first hand experience or actual hard evidence to make people believe it. Until then fingers will be pointed and the "liars"will be burned on a internet cross for speaking of such devil ideas. Ha

Grow, I agree with you on the attitudes. I guess part of the reason why so many people don't believe or question is the alarming rate of false reports given each year.

False reports is not the big reason for me, its that little thing called Proof.  No one has supplied that yet.  How many hunters, hikers, bird watchers, farmers, drivers, outdoor enthusiast heck anyone in NY carrying a camera, or a cell phone, or hang trail cams around this state and yet out of those millions of people Nothing nadda zilch with any credibility that hasnt lead to my cousins uncle Joes best friends brother in laws coworker got this picture only to be proven it was posted across half the country on the internet years ago.

If you read the article I posted, the DEC was able to find hair samples that matched the cat killed in CT and acknowledged that the cat was in the state

One of the carnies had a baby cougar at the county fair over the summer.

He was charging $2 to enter his tent like it was some kind of freak show inside.

The line of NY rednecks lined up for a peak looked like 12 o' clock madhouse outside a Walmart on Black Friday!

I payed the admission. I saw with my own two eyes. I even took pics. I am a believer they do exist in NY now, and there is obviously a breeding population! :fie:

We have all read that article a hundred times.  Its about a cat killed by a car that passed though many states supposedly including NY.   Which leads to even more credibility to what I was saying, if they can find a hair from a mountain lion that passed through the state why cant we find the proof that there is this illusive creature some want so badly to be residents of NY?

Not a few - ONE.

And no one is saying anyone is lying - just honestly mistaken.

There are more reports of sightings in the NE than in the states with documented wild populations.

Mountain lions are one of the most elusive creatures in North America. If by some chance a cat is spotted, I doubt anyone would have a camera ready and pointing at it before it hauled cat a$$ out of there.

Do I think there are resident cats? Not sure. I lean more towards yes based on what I hear from who I talk to. Maybe I'm being lied to but the people I'm speaking with have no reason to lie and I believe them.

I'd love to get a picture of one on my trail camera but unless it's wearing a Yankee hat or has a current NY Post in its hand I doubt anyone would believe it was from NY.

Here is a question, is it illegal to shoot a mountain lion in NY? I feel like I've heard it is.

Well to some extent I agree but not a lot.  I have hunted for them out west and agree they are elusive.  But just the evidence alone they leave not so much.  I stated in another thread a while ago just there kills alone of livestock would be easily observed by any farmer for that matter.  They eat fresh kill, just ask anyone with livestock out west.  Tracks are also very evident, and yes I seen them plenty long enough to take a camera out and take a picture.  Especially when they are in a tree.  There are also binoculars for long range viewing.  Aside from all that DEC says there are 750,000 hunters in NY, to say they are so elusive that not one out of those 750,000 annual hunters aside from the other hundreds of thousands of people that have trekked through this state have never had a chance to take a picture of, or capture one on a trail camera with evidence to back it up, or further proof as in a foot print, fresh kill, scat, etc but yet the DEC can find a couple hairs from the one that passed through the state?  If so then I guess we have a mountain lion population in NY state and there is not a living human being that can prove it.  I find that extremely hard to believe.

Grabbing at straws much?

Look, some "UFO experts" say theres a chance a small group of UFOs float around the world daily, whats your point? There are freaking TV "reality" shows about people chasing around an imaginary ape, does that make the creature really exist?

Bottom line, the one Cougar that was hit, left a trail of evidence. If there was a resident population, those animals would leave the same type of evidence, but none exists. Wish all you want, they arent there.

Dang WNY you just ruined xmas for all the UFO, Sasquatch and Mountain lion dreamers all in one post.  :santaclaus::biggrin:  Honestly the Sasquatch must be real, after all spell check demands the S to be capitalized, if that isnt enough proof then I dont know what would be.

I've read cougars will carry there kill up a tree and eat there.

I'm saying that it is very possible that cougars live in ny and could live in NY. I don't think that cougars know what state they are in. Based off of studies on them they TRAVEL all the time, 50-100miles a day has been documented.

Keep in mind, they are true predators.

Think of any animal you have ever experienced in the woods, none of them like human contact. We are a threat. Avoid us at all costs. So you take a creature that is a better hunter than all of us combined. Probably smarter than any animal we have ever hunted and some expect there to be more pictures then there are based on people in the woods?

Again I'm not saying there is a population in the state, simply that it is possible and I believe some sightings reported to be true.

And just for $hits and giggles,

It is illegal to shoot a Bigfoot or Sasquatch in Washington. Amazing law for a creature that doesn't exist...lol

Cougars dont carry their kills into trees. Anywhere they do actually live, you can find evidence of them. The ONE that was proven to be here left evidence, dont you think a population would as well? Heck, a kangaroo got loose out near Syracuse last year, there were people getting pics of it with their cell phone cameras from the thruway.

Are you insinuating that lawmakers are smart enough to make laws that make sense? Thats the silliest thing Ive read in this thread yet!
