Early
I am all for welfare.....I think we should take of those among us who are less fortunate. I do not, however, think we should give a "free ride" to anyone. We will help you when you are down...if you help yourself at the same time.

The problem is too many people abuse the system. For those, I have ZERO respect or tolerance.
BUCKANDAQUARTER
I can't believe that they can use EBT cards to buy beer and cigarettes. I threw up in my mouth when I saw a woman buying a pack of smokes on a "benefits" card. I really bit my tongue hard not to give her a lecture and say how she should be ashamed. I agree with Early though, there are some folks who have been dealt a crappy hand, and do need a leg up. There are so many people who don't have any pride and work the system. There should be some wayto prove you are putting in an effort to better yourself and your family while on these programs.

letinmfly
What Cuomo's crew wants to call welfare from now on..." The transitional living fund"...Why not just "Your hands in my pocket fund" Problem I have with that is the word "transitional". That would indicate that the people on welfare will transition from being on welfare into the work force. We've seen how that has worked out in the past. I don't have a problem with people needing help but I do have a problem with them being on the "state payroll" indefinitely.
BUCKANDAQUARTER
I didn't know this, you just ruined my night I had no idea either until this summer. A friend of mine does HVAC/Refer. work for Stewarts. He said whenever he is working down in Troy that he notices what seems to be 1 out of every 3 tansactions is for beer or smokes with an EBT card. He saw a dude buying HEINEKEN with an EBT card over the summer. How is that legal? Edited January 9, 2014 by BUCKANDAQUARTER
growalot
I know there are quite a few that transition...from being a kid from a family on WELFARE to an adult on WELFARE having never worked
vizslas
this transitional word is a load of crap. It will never happen. The democrats will never let people work...This is what keeps them in buisness. Taking from the haves and giving it to the have not's. Its a great way to get votes. Cuomo is doing a great job with damage control .Genomic medicine dishing money to who ever wants it making apperances ... lying to the public like he has ten minutes to live. Welcome to hell/NY a truly welfare i mean democratic state. The problem is overpopulation.infiltration and illegal's....Lets shut the doors on this country... You think you could move to another country.... Good luck with that... You better have some skills that would make it profitable for them to let you in..otherwise just move to the USA aka Freeloader Central. So lets see what makes this country work Welfare ,Unemployment, Prisons, The drug war. Taxing the poor..before you get paid and after while your spending it Double taxation its just the best.... I love my country........I just hate the fat cats that screwed it up for the rest of us ....GREED my friends and the loss of motivation to do anything about it stop watching government run news and find out the real truth and lets stand up for our rights.
ants
This whole welfare deal, unfortunately, has turned into a big scam for too many people. Not all people, don't get me wrong. I think that we can all agree that we would gladly help out people who really need help, and we would do so for how ever long it took for them to get back on their feet, as long as they were trying to find work and help themselves. But for too many it has become a "right" in their minds. It's automatic…" I GET A CHECK" Generational welfare is all too common. Wheres my welfare check? and Wheres my "Transitional" check? Is the same damn thing and everyone knows it.
Culvercreek hunt club
Add to that the push for the extension of the unemployment benefits. I know many need this but it too is being abused. I would be for the extension if employers had the option of reporting ones on it that turn down work. In the last two years I have offered to bring over two dozen back to work and were refused because they still had weeks left to collect. EspressoBuzz
"talking to someone that did some research..." "problem is too many people abuse the system..." "has turned into a big scam for too many people..." The percentages of abuse are small and there are LOADS of studies to prove it, but that doesn't make it news worthy so you'll always see the scammer or deadbeat but you'll hardly ever see the story about the person who used their "handout" to better themselves. The system has many checks and balances to avoid scams but like all things in this world if you really set yourself to scam the system you probably can. EBT cards are for welfare and unemployment and look identical.
WNYBuckHunter
You cant buy alcohol or tobacco with ebt or food stamps. Do you guys listen to everything people tell you, or do you check for yourselves?
BUCKANDAQUARTER
Umm you can use an EBT card for alcohol and tobacco. So the people I saw using an EBT card were probably on either welfare or unemployment. Food stamps is just for food I think. WNYBuckHunter
If its the unemployment card, its like a debit card. Who gives a rats ass what people do with that money. You pay into that system as you work, so as long as someone isnt turning jobs down that would pay them close to what they made previously, i dont care what they do with their unenjoyment money. WNYBuckHunter
Yes, they can use it to withdraw money at an atm. They cannot use it to directly purchase those things. The only way to stop that would be to do away with giving them cash at all. Read what you posted "“The Public Assistance Integrity Act,” would prevent welfare recipients from using their EBT cards to make ATM withdrawals from certain places, including liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs. BUCKANDAQUARTER
Currently, no law exists protecting public assistance cash benefits from being either used to purchase alcohol, tobacco or lottery tickets, or withdrawn or used in any liquor store, casino or establishment providing adult-oriented entertainment. BUCKANDAQUARTER
In the end people are withdrawing public assistance funds (such as welfare) to buy beer and tobacco. Stewarts has a HTM machine where they can wihdraw $ to buy beer and tobacco. I don't know what you are arguing for. BUCKANDAQUARTER
That aricle was from 6 months ago I don't know what became of it, but hopefully something. The legislation was prompted by media reports by the New York Post, NBC News and others that showed EBT cards were regularly being used in locations such as bars, liquor stores, tobacco shops and even strip clubs. Last month, Florida became the first state to enact such a ban.
Vince1
I know many people who grew up with their mothers getting public assistance, went to college off financial aid or military money, got great jobs, own their own homes, pay taxes like everyone else, send their kids to private schools, me being one of them. are their abuses of the system, damn straight. like a lotto winner who continued to draw benefits now she is broke and cant get em. but just like winning the lotto, the big abusers are rare, the small time ones are a bit easier to spot. Culvercreek hunt club
You cant buy alcohol or tobacco with ebt or food stamps. Do you guys listen to everything people tell you, or do you check for yourselves? Better rephrase that. You aren't supposed to be able to. But there are places that allow it contrary to the regulations.
