.243 Hunting

I hunt deer with a .243.   Works very well for deer.  I have been impressed by the knock down power.  What's the biggest animal you would hunt with a .243?

I wouldn't hesitate to hunt caribou with a .243 .They are non dangerous and no harder to kill than a deer.

 

If I were hunting elk , moose, or anything with that might eat  me, I'd buy or borrow a bigger rifle.

Deer for me.  Heavier constructed bullets do well for me.

Mule deer is probably the biggest i would take with it.

You can say the same thing about the .223, .222, or even the .22 LR( if you manage to get it between the ribs) but that doesn't make any of them a good choice for heavy game.

Nothing wrong with the .243 within it's limits.  But if you need to take a long shot, in the wind, and have enough energy left to drop a big animal, the .243 isn't the best choice.

Agreed. When you are using a caliber on the light side, shot placement and bullet selection are much more important.

Good heavier bullet and limited distance of say 100 yards I'd take anything except maybe moose and any bear bigger than a black bear.
