First-light
If I were to go buy one tomorrow what would I need to leave the store with my new hand gun?
burmjohn
Legally or illegally? But anyways, to leave to store tomorrow, legally, you wouldn't even with a permit unless you already did the paperwork ahead of time.
Jeremy K
A pistol permit would help , but you still would be leaving empty handed.

But anyways, to leave to store tomorrow, legally, you wouldn't even with a permit unless you already did the paperwork ahead of time. In the first case: you would need a permission slip signed by the judge in your county (the permit) and a bunch of other paperwork. In the second case: a very large pair of cajones and a desire to see the inside of a correctional facility.
MACHINIST
For my county paperwork already completed at the local county office. Then a nics check at the dealer or another FFL holder if you were buying a used gun FTF.And as long as your brady bill is up to date then you should be good. jrm
Pistol License is the obvious first requirement. The exact procedure will vary by county. In my county: 1. Go to gun store. Purchase gun. 2. Take paperwork to police headquarters. Get purchase document. 3. Return to gun store with purchase document. Receive gun. 4. Go back to police HQ with gun for inspection and have it added to license. You can do all in the same day. It can be a royal PITA if the gun store is not close to police HQ. Step # 3 must be completed within a certain time frame (14 days?) before the purchase document expires. I believe you have 10 days to complete step 4. That's the same procedure for suffolk county as well. The only difference was that I had to bring a $5 money order to precinct for them to add the gun to my license. Can be done in one day but is definitely a pain in the butt!!

HectorBuckBuster
First-Light it depends on what county you are in if you can leave the day you buy your pistol. In Schuyler County they give you a coupon and you leave the same day with your pistol from the seller, as long as you pass the background check. Also right now 390 ammo seems alittle harder to find, 9mm Ammo is all over

ants
The only thing you need to buy a hand gun is a valid NY pistol permit. Whether you leave with it, depends on what county you are in. Most counties require that the gun stays with the dealer until you have it put on your permit, receive a purchase coupon from the county and return to the dealer with a purchase coupon. But a few counties pre issue the coupon, allowing you to take the gun as soon as you buy it. You then have, I think its 5 days but I might be wrong on that, to put the gun on your permit. WNYBuckHunter
Ants got it for the most part. My county lets you buy purchase coupons and they are good till you use them. I have a couple in my pocket right now. You can take the pistol home but it's supposed to stay in the safe until you add it to your permit. They don't care if you wait a week or two, just dont let them find out you've been carrying it.
