Mr VJP
Agreed. I was simply responding to the OP's advice from his friend claiming the .30-06 isn't as good as the .308.
Culvercreek hunt club
The tests I spoke about were done with real rifles that could be carried from site to site, Not Rail Type Rifles that you would need a hand truck to move from place to place. We are talking Hunting type rifles here. And as said by me and others either the .308 or 30-06 caliber will be just fine for hunting in NY . I think VJP is agreeing with you. I believe his comments were directed at the posts about the cartridge itself. I haven't seen anyone here say that any of is would notice any difference in the cartridges in our NY hunting rifles. Elmo
To sum up the last few comments, unless you're planning on taking 600+ yard shots on deer, and you're using typical loads, the 308 and the 30-06 are practically identical. edbone
Well guys I went and bought a Savage model 111 30.06 with a Simmons scope with the accu trigger.I have not shot it because of my 84 per hr work week schedule and we got damn mosquitos so bad they will devour you but I really like it.Really kind of torqued at Bass Pro because I have bought three guns there since Feb and they would not match Dicks Sporting goods across the street.Dicks sold me the exact same gun for 120.00 cheaper.Same finish scope everything. They didn't even want to come down at all.I guess no more guns going to be bought at bass.Pretty anxious to shoot the 30 06

But anyway that rifle/caliber combo should be an excellent hunting rig. Good luck.

Sparke2
What are your feelings on the 25-06 ?
Culvercreek hunt club
What are your feelings on the 25-06 ? great round for varmits up to deer sized game. You give up the heaver bullets that are available with the 30-06 but it is flat shooting and less kick (in equal rifles of action and weights). if you don't reload I would check around for availability of ammo before you make a decision.
Sparke2
Just was wondering how many guy's know about it . I set it up with a big piece of glass to do just that varmit ( yote's) to deer . I can get 120gr fatory loaded rounds in a very wide rang of bullet types. not a problem get the amo tho . I will say she scream's !
NFA-ADK
Nice gun Edbone, I have the Savage model 110, great gun. The most accurate gun I have, I call it old reliable. (Better than my 308 Shhh.) Congrats and good luck with it! Bought mine in 88 and it still works like a charm. Usually 3-5 shots are all I need to confirm it is accurate. Some tips: Clean barrels perform best. Make sure you clean the barrel and put a light coat of oil for hunting season and after every shoot. Keep your scope on the lower power when hunting, you can always turn it up if they are far away. (Hope I never make that mistake again!) AaronBlaine
go with a weatherby vanguard with a series 2 trigger. Crisp accurate durable and you throw a 220 grain in and you can bring any large game in north America right down to hell! Go with the synthetic stocks. Ive had to use mine to beat down a pricker bush or two and your not gonna cry when the skuffs on the buttstock start matchin the heads on the wall! You should give it a try in the weatherby they work great together!
