Live From the Stand / Woods 2014!

Had a big buck come running in from a wide open alfalfa field. He was moving a good clip and I had no chance to line up on him. I though their was movement in a thicker spot in the woods, but just a flash. He definitely heading to that area.  One of the biggest bodied deer I 've seen since 2000. Rack was nice, about 140 ish.

On my way to town, i saw the same buck chasing a big doe. She was running along an uncut corn field, then diving into the cross rows. He headed to the headland running with the rows. I've seen a lot of deer action in my life , but the same buck 2 times within 3 hours, a few miles away, is a first for me.

Back in the saddle. 9h. Mid 30's light wind and drizzle. On a side note, helped a neighbor recover a non hitlist 8pt last night that came in my property. Gut shot, I was tracking gut slime but I knew where he wanted to go, and I was right. Nice recovery and first time I went off slime and not blood ! Was extremely hard to track since leaves had a layer of ice on them. He was happy I helped track and drag, I was happy it wasn't one of the big boys... my dad NEEDS to get one on the ground ! Maybe today is his day....

Got about an inch of snow last night that started while I was sitting watch. Between them and this morning it musta been a deer party, tracks all over lower end. I came out to the far end not a track. Maybe I shoulda stayed down there but I need to be where they are gonna be not were, hope.

40 snow will be gone soon

What a great morning...right at 7: 20 ..opening I'm doing the ole "owlhead turn" scanning from lane way through woods to lane way and back. When I go to the rt side of lane way there stood a huge spike...biggest spike(rack size) I have ever seen and we have had some large ones,,I have to measure the 9's main beam to tell you how long they were as it curved out past his ears...the bases were the size of.....hhmmm .. A Hormel bacon bit jar...lol... he was 40 yrds out when I saw him and had to glass him to just make sure there were no tines...some should have materialized out of my will power...lol...he had his nose down and was circling and zig  zagging my way then at 20 yrds he stopped and stared right through me for a moment...at 10 yrds he stopped again then turned and nosed around behind me a bit before hitting the swamp....There are going to be some nice buck around in a couple of years with these big wide curved spikes about.... I cam home and pulled the cards on the way and had another wide curved spike on the cams just smaller. plus the three point I passed the other day...then at 9 it started to drizzel a bit too much  so stopped watching fawns in the food plot 200yrds away and came in...nice red tail was hunting the squirrels near me,,,nice morning NO WIND :D

Yes it was grow. Kinda reminded me of October 1st opener, just a little cooler. Not near the action of yesterday for me, but still a great sit to look around to notice all that is great.

thunnus, this happened in 8G. Now is the third phase of the breeding season here which goes on typically till around the 10th. This is the time when we have harvested the best bucks. It's not about the number of buck now, it'sthe quality.

Passed up doe at first light, pushed a small thicket against my better thoughts , as one can push but need at least 3 watchers , not one. 5 doe came out to far from me ...... Resting in car round 2 .buddy wants me to drop a doe for him , well I'm still trying for a nice buck ....

Just went out and hung a stand in a area I have been seeing lots of traffic for tomorrow mornings hunt! Something strange about being out in the woods in the middle of the night!!! I know I go in and out in the dark... But being in the woods around midnight is totally different!

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
