Need some help with turkey loads ?

Recommended Posts

So I’m seeing lots of birds on my trail cam

I want to use my 20ga 1187 3” mag with 28” bird barrel

I have a full choke tube , do I need a turkey choke ?

I have 2-3/4 “ 4 Shot Remingtons or Kent 3” number 4 and 5 shot Turkey , assume the Kent’s would be best ?

Should I camo wrap my gun or doesn’t it really matter ?

Thanks for the help

The gun should tell you whether you need a turkey choke by patterning it. If you can get an even pattern and a minimum of 100 pellets in a 10” circle at 40-yds, you’re good to go. 100 pellets seems to be the sport’s standard and I use it. In addition, I would not assume one brand of shot is better than another without patterning. Some guns could be finicky with the load size and amount going down the barrel. Bottom line: Pattern your gun. Good luck to you

Wont hurt to try a turkey choke to see how much better it would be at that range or if you have a 35-40 yard shot

Turkey choke is the way to  go. I pattern at 40 yards, using 1 inch grid paper. Needs to be a minimum of 2 pellets in each square for me to be happy. Usually a lot more, using my 3 and 1/2 inch number 7 Hevi-shot.
