WNYBuckHunter
So Im going through and reading the exact wording of the bill. Here are some highlights... - No person shall hunt deer: WITH A CROSSBOW UNLESS SUCH CROSSBOW SHALL CONSIST OF A BOW AND STRING, EITHER COMPOUND OR RECURVE, THAT LAUNCHES A MINIMUM FOURTEEN INCH BOLT, NOT INCLUDING POINT, MOUNTED UPON A STOCK WITH A TRIGGER THAT HOLDS THE STRING AND LIMBS UNDER TENSION UNTIL RELEASED. THE TRIGGER UNIT OF SUCH CROSSBOW MUST HAVE A WORKING SAFETY. THE MINIMUM LIMB WIDTH OF SUCH CROSSBOW SHALL BE SEVENTEEN INCHES, HAVE A MINIMUM PEAK DRAW WEIGHT OF ONE HUNDRED POUNDS AND A MAXIMUM PEAK DRAW WEIGHT OF TWO HUNDRED POUNDS. THE MINIMUM OVERALL LENGTH OF SUCH CROSSBOW FROM BUTT TO STOCK TO FRONT OF LIMBS SHALL BE TWENTY-FOUR INCHES. - The use upon land inhabited by deer or bear of a jacklight, spot light or other type of artificial light by any person who is or is accompanied by a person who is in possession, at the time of such use, of a long bow, a crossbow or firearm of any kind, shall be presumptive evidence that such person is hunting deer or bear with the aid of such light, in violation of this subdivision, unless: (1) such long bow is unstrung, or such a firearm OR CROSSBOW is taken down, or securely fastened in a case, or locked in the trunk of a vehi cle, or (2) the firearm is a pistol or revolver, or (3) the firearm is not in or on a motor vehicle and is a rifle designed or adapted for use of rim-fire ammunition and neither the person in possession of the gun, nor any member of his party, has in his possession any twenty-two caliber ammunition other than twenty-two cali ber rim-fire ammunition, or (4) the firearm is not in or on a motor vehicle and is a shotgun and neither the person in possession of the gun, nor any member of his party, has in his possession ammunition other than shells loaded with scatter shot of size number four or smaller. - The crossbow will be implemented for use on all lands during regular season (gun season) and late archery/ml season. There is wording in the bill though that allows the use of a crossbow on PRIVATE land during any deer season.

Larry
I'm for the use of x-bows but it doesn't mean i'm going to use one i shoot my bow way to good to wast my money on a x-bow. in the late season if i have a choice of what to use it wouldn't be a bow or a x- bow. Str8shooter_USA
I hope Paterson signs the bill into law for a few reasons. Although I would prefer my compound bow over the crossbow for ease in handling, it would be nice to have an alternative should I lose more upper body strength. I suspect the law would encourage more archers to hunt the season thereby increasing revenue. The arguments used by that narrow minded organization (not mentioning names but the initials are NYB) are archaic. Comparatively speaking there is no sound basis that a crossbow has any advantage over compounds or recurves. In truth the opposite is true. They are heavier, more cumbersome, and louder. There are members here who would disagree and I'd welcome their responses if only to generate more activity on this new site. After all they believe they are "right." They are not "right"....just misguided. Rob
Chevy
Shooter, advantage has nothing to do with it. A spear has no advantage and it also should not be allowed in archery season. The issue is that nothing other than archery equipment should be used during archery season. A crossbow is not archery equipment and if you need to make comparisons it is more like a gun. If you want the disabled to use crossbows during archery season then support such a bill. Everything I have seen is pushing for total inclusion which is just not right. -signed...a guy happy with archery season as is but would prefer to go back to 10/15 opening day with regular season on monday. Larry
Here is the definition of a Cross Bow. This definition is out of the Webster’s Dictionary & Thesaurus copy rite 1999. Cross – Bow: A weapon consisting chiefly of a bow mounted crosswise near the end of a wooden stock. Sounds like archery equipment to me. SteveB
Yea, OK Larry. Have you seen the PSE AR15 crossbow. Looks like a gun to me. Over $2000.00 and does nothing a regular crossbow does not do. Only thing it has over any other crossbow in the "cool" factor for marketing - and at 2 grand isn't going to flood the market.
fasteddie
Hey , you can get a Bowtech Stryker for only $1500 and it shoots a Bolt at 405 fps . Not bad . Plus , it is capable of shooting "softball size" groups at 100 yards with a non magnification scope . Couple that with the information with the interview with Ottie Snyder ( the media specialist for Horton Industries ) from the July , 2006 edition of the Whitetail Journal magazine and there is little need to spend / waste time practicing with a vertical bow . 30 minutes and you are ready to go ! Sounds like a real winner !

Str8shooter_USA
Chevy- This is my second day on here and I promisied myself not to pi$$ anybody off for at least a week. Now I know you're entitled to your opinion but think about it, they call it a crossbow not a crossgun. Any questions? sits in trees - I like your sense of humor. Sounds like a real winner ! Sounds like you put a little too much into advertising claims. Nobody is proficient with even a gun in 30 minutes. A compound or longbow could possibly be that accurate at 100 yards with enough practice, there are competitions shot all the time at that distance. Whats your point? Oh and the 405fps is measured just like a bow, with a bolt that you cant use for hunting, no broadhead, under perfect conditions and a few feet off of the end of the crossbow. You will never see those speeds in a hunting setup.
WNYBuckHunter
Yea, OK Larry. Have you seen the PSE AR15 crossbow. Looks like a gun to me. Not many people are going to use that. You might want to look at the width of the TAC15 and see if it even conforms to the law being proposed. Add on to that, its not a gun, its a bow mounted on a trigger group. Nyhunter325
now i see all this agreement and disagreement with the possibility of the crossbows being legal i must agree that crossbows get away from the true nature of archery but the traditonal archers had the same disagreement with the compound bows but then again the crossbows will bring more "hunters" not archers into the sport but it will also help with the people who cant pull back a bow due to medical or physical reason whatever the reason there will be good and the bad to the cross bows being legalized my self i will stick to the good ol stick and string along with many others but you could look at it in a good way and think of how many people may get into hunting because of this im not picking sides im just explaining a situation that has been long disagreed on and agreed on correct me if im wrong but im just trying to help people see the good in this not just the bad...... sits in trees
below is an E-mail i just received from a anti crossbow guy in his feeble attempt to try and scare me..i think this shows who is really scared huh!! i really like the part about the coalition ;D PLEASE READ BELOW>>>>>> I was alerted to your push for crossbows in NY by a friend. He does a great job of monitoring all the crossbow forums for the coalition. AT, Excal, Crossbow Nation, etc. I gotta say that I like what I'm seeing. Thanks for the many posts and those of others that are going to help us as we make sure to keep the xguns out of the archery season. Be happy with what you got in NY. Keep posting up and make sure to have your friends post all the plans for your fight. Our guy in WI sends it onto us and we make sure our friends in the legislature understand your real plan. cheers! We'll be watching.

That boils down to that the guy is a professional salesman, and probably one of the better ones in the company. Its his job to make the product seem a certain way, whether its the truth or not. Im sure you have had experience with that type of thing.

Nyhunter325
but in the end of all of this the anti what ever it is is still going to try and find some thing to fight about but i think of this as step up for the huntin sport for a chance for people to see what it is about. bubba
and an inline muzzleloder isnt traditional and a sidelock isnt a flint lock. Bottom line is if it will generate money for the state, it will happen.
