opening day of Long Island shotgun

I hunt tomorrow at Otis Pike.  I heard from a friend that only two deer were taken today.  One was an 8 pointer.  Has anybody heard about any success or where the 8 was shot?

just heard that the rumor is that it was Rocky Point either spot 26 or 27.

Has anyone been down there trying to hunt stand-by yet?  I wonder whatthe availibilty is.

I went down there today.  Place was packed with people waiting on standby.  I signed up to hunt Martin luther king day so im guaranteed a day to hunt then in one of the spots i like.  Goodluck to everybody going out!!!!

Never hunted that spot before.  My advice would be to just sit till about 9:00 then take a slow walk around the property.  Once it warms up you should be able to sneak around quietly in the melting snow.  Good luck!!!

My buddy hunted the old Grumman's prop yesterday. Got a 2.5 year old 7 ptr.(had broken browe tine) and a 7.5 year old doe. Checked them in @ DEC and the only thing that came in was a shed buck taken from Rocky Point. Still had a arrow in its shoulder. I dont no what spot # he was in.    I'm hunting Jan 20th at H.Hills. Anyone have any info about that area other than its cold. Lol

passed on a doe and a spike at 15 yards but had a great day anyway. Hey what spot is considered the old grumman property?  Is that a numbered spot or private land?

By the way the antlers seem to be dropping early this year??????

That shed buck with the arrow in its shoulder was taken at Rocky point spot 15.It was taken by a co-worker of mine.

I got 2 in for butchering Monday night..both bucks, one was a really nice 8 with high tines...don't remember what area, though....

Congrats on the deer!!!  (longislandhunter) The Grumman hunt was only for Riverhead residents which really sucks. It is a two week hunt and i know a few guys that got in on the hunt.  They saw a ton of deer but didnt get any shots off.

Got out to Otis Pike for 3 hrs this evening.  Was not able to get one of my fav spots and settled for a spot i have never hunted before.  No deer and got soaked as the snow turned to sleet and rain. 

WHYYYYYYYYYYY no shotgun hunting on weekends, even on private land.  Just doesn't make sense to me.

I always understood that it was because the rich and famous don't really mind the hunting during the week when they aren't out there.  But on the weekend the east end belongs to them, and you the old saying about money talks!!  I can't verify that it is the case but it sure sounds like that's the case!!  :

That and DEC claims that non-hunters use the lands for hiking, fishing and bike riding.
