sick deer ?

My buddy was telling me last night that he and his wife were putting up snowmobile stakes sunday afternoon and the nastiest looking deer he ever saw walked right past them and didn't care they were there ,really scuzzy,fur all ruffled up ,skinny beyond belief. Next thing you know his dog runs up and knocks this thing over ,the doe is screaming so he gets the dog and she stood up and continued to walk away . He would have shot it but doesn't carry a gun when not hunting . Any idea what it could be?

Old age? Perhaps her teeth were worn down to where she could no longer chew her food?

Or a nagging injury from a car collision.  We all know how resilient deer can be, but sadly, some injuries will take quite a long time to kill the deer.

My first thought was an infection from a bad shot or internal injury from a car collision. I texted him to call the DEC ,I guess he is friends with the local officer so he is gonna give him a call today.

Lingering effects from a bullet or arrow would be my first thought. Certainly can't rule out a car either. But it could be anything really, deer get diseases like we do... Too bad he couldn't end her suffering right there...
