Gun storage in NY state

Hi fellow forum members,

 

I moved from Canada to Manhattan a couple years ago for work. I've hunted my whole life, and am hoping to pick things back up this spring in NY state during turkey season.

 

It seems that someone on a work visa cannot obtain a NYC firearms license, with the specific law being that a firearm cannot enter the city without a license. So I have been debating whether to just hunt turkey/deer with a crossbow, or buy a gun upstate NY and store it up there somewhere.

 

Does anyone have recommendations? I'd like to avoid putting it in a storage unit if possible, due to theft and conditions, but I don't have any family/friends upstate. What I'd really like to do is find a small gun shop that would keep the gun there for me, and allow me to pick it up during normal business hours for use. If you know of any good shops, please mention them here or PM me.

 

By the way, I'm hoping to hunt in the Catskills area, but am really open to anything at this point within 3-4 hours drive of Manhattan. Even if it's another state that somehow presents a better situation.

I think depending on the size of your place in the city, a small storage locker might not be a bad idea anyhow. You can store what ends up being quite a bit of gear for hunting in there and not taking up valuable storage space in your pad. Most storage areas are pretty secure these days and a shotgun fully equipped is going to be under $1k and can be insured for cheap or even free with an NRA membership. just my .02. good luck.

I dont think his concern is storage in his manhattan apt., his concern is that he cant keep a rifle or shotgun within NYC or the boroughs as it would require him to have a rifle and shotgun permit and that is unattainable due to his resident status.

They meant getting a storage unit upstate so the rifle never has to enter the city.

no I understand. I'm just assuming he doesn't have a ton of storage at his place. I have friends with million dollar pads in manhatten and they're tiny. Just thinking where I would begin to keep even 1/2 the crap i use for hunting just wouldn't even work.

 

So my point is a storage locker could be beneficial for not just the gun but lots of other crap we hunters accumulate.

I agree. I also work in Manhattan and yes most of those apartmemts are tiny.

I would think the storage unit route would be the best way to go as well. 24 hour access. I know you can get heated indoor storage that is secure at some locations and you wont have to worry about moisture if it is heated. Can you purchase a gun in the states if your from Canada?

Unfortunately, the law is one thing, and what the shops understand it to be is another. You won't be able to purchase a gun in most of NYS because of your residence without the NYC long gun permit.

You won't be able to own a crossbow either, as I believe it's illegal in NYC. You're left with a traditional bow or compound.

Bow hunting near NYC presents a lot of opportunities, and many have picked it up to extend their season. 30-45 mins in either direction and you're onto some decent bow areas. Something to think about.

The law means I can't bring it into NYC, so I think I'll get a storage unit somewhere upstate and keep it there. Otherwise, I'd have to speak to a gun shop owner and see if we could work out storage.

 

I live in the city because I work here and travel through the airports weekly, so it doesn't make much sense to live upstate and commute 10+ hours a week.

 

I do believe I'm fine storing a crossbow at my apt in NYC for hunting purposes. I can't find any documentation to support this being illegal, although others have mentioned it.

Being there's no paperwork involved with buying a crossbow purchasing one will not be an issue. As long as you travel in your own car, and not on public transportation with it, and it travels cased I see no reason to worry about living in NYC with a crossbow.

You'll find quickly that you'll not be able to purchase. A firearm in NYS, CT, NJ, or PA. It's not about storage to the gun shops, it's about not selling it to you because you don't posses such permit. Don't believe me? Call up the gun shops and tell them you want to purchase a gun and you live in Manhattan. See what they say.

Yes if there is indeed no paper work I guess he'd have to sneak it in and out of the place for hunting.

 

In any case, archery seasons starts on Oct 1, so is several weeks longer than crossbow anyway. If you cannot get a gun at this time, give that a go.

Unfortunately, I don't. It wasn't easy to figure it out through the NYC penal code, but once upon a time I read through it and found it unlawful to posses a crossbow in NYC, amongst other things.

My father bought a gun upstate and they never mentioned they would not sell to us because we live in one of the boroughs. We have the permit but it wasn't asked for at all. We did end up filling out the paper work to bring the gun into the city though.

Some sellers upstate will check, other don't.  I've had some who asked for my DL to run the background check and the moment they saw that it was a NYC address on it, asked to see my permit.  I've also had others who never checked.  It all depends on the person and their knowledge of the law and how much they want to make it their business.

 

As far as crossbows, it was mentioned to me before about it being illegal and I remember finding something about it online but now I can't seem to find anything about it.  Has things changed?  I tend to lean on the side of caution when there is uncertainty as I sure as heck don't want to have to lawyer up just to prove I'm innocent of any wrong doing.

I guess so. We are allowed to keep guns upstate with out a permit so we should be able to buy any where outside of the city. But i agree, the best course of action is to get the license even though that $300 every 3 years is a tough pill to swallow.
