airedale
Numerous variables preclude the possibility of exact burn rate comparisons. Exercise proper handloading techniques and safety precautions at all times when handloading ammunition. This is the most up to date complete listing I have come across, 266 smokeless powders from all the major manufacturers fastest to the slowest. Daveboone
Interesting, but not much help without a reloading book.. regardless of similarity it has no bearing on interchangeability
airedale
This information would definitely be used in conjunction with various reloading manuals. This kind of info would probably not be of much interest to the average reloader, for someone that has gone off the deep end it can be very enlightening. Larry
You can’t inter change powders. I reload 444 marlins and use reloader7, IMR- 4198 and H-4198 they all have close to the same burn rate. But you can’t inter change them grain for grain. That’s why you have a reloading book. It’s your recipe book even changing primers can increase pressure. Never use powder that’s not listed for the caliber your loading. There may be different powders you could use for that caliber that’s not listed in the book you’re using. That’s why most of us have more than one book and use the internet. Never make up your own shit.

I have been doing it for years with no over pressure signs and getting the same velocity they list on the package. Not saying anyone should do it but a couple local guys did it first and I went to the range to see for myself.Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
pitweiler
I’m just starting to jump into reloading. I was looking through the Winchester ball powder information and the fastest they had a 230gr .45 ACP loaded to was 771fps. Are some of these manuals loaded light for liability reasons? That was my guess.
airedale
The manuals of today have loading data that is more conservative than what was printed in loading manuals, and what was published by the gun and outdoor magazine writers 50 years ago, liability and safety the driving factors. Daveboone
this thread is getting old, but is still being viewed so will benefit from this warning. The past summer I arrived at my local range to find an individual staggering around in a daze, holding his L forearm up, with blood splattered across his face. He stated his rifle just blew up. I assisted him to his truck, where a friend was driving him to recieve medical care. The shooter did say he was shooting reloads from an unknown source., 30-06 out of a bolt action rifle. I picked up the magazine. floor plate and 1/2 of a reciever wall that was blown out. You never know what conditoin someone elses rifles are in, or the detail they payed to the loading process. Never trust someone elses loads or loading recommendations unless you can verify them in a manual.

I see guys passing around loading data to each other all the time on the web.To me working up passed max. loads is playing Russian roulette.I always seem to find the sweet spot just under max.anyway.

I once had one of my hunting buddies pissed off at me at camp when I would not lend him some of my handloads (which are not resized) because he was low on ammo. It wasn't until 3 other handloaders told him that was the right thing did he get over it.
