growalot
Next turkey hunt. Give me your nastiest predawn turkey hunting misadventure.... I'll start out with this...I was at camp and I was trying to be quiet going into a spot I hadn't set up for the day before...I get to a wide beech and sit down ..no gloves on yet and dark. I start to slowly move leaf litter away from me to set things down...my hand slide through a bigole greasy pile of raccoon dung..yep up around and in between my fingers...I about lost it...physically and mentally..you know how I love raccoons..end of hunt...

turkeyfeathers
Ya. I've sat in coon crap before. You pick the biggest tree blindly in the dark and I guarantee you'll find it. Years back my buddy came home from Seattle We used to hang out a lot when he was in town. Well next day I'm hunting spring birds but I can't say no to meeting him out for barley pops as its been awhile. With about an hour of sleep and running late I get into the woods about a half hour later than I want. Bird gobbles on roost and close. I quickly sit down. Right in a leek patch. I managed not to heave at the stank of them things and hungover. Didn't kill a bird that day but did get an early out of woods and a nap at home.
Lawdwaz
Growie.......If it makes you feel better, I can just about guarantee more than one coon has sat down or walked through my dung before. Oh and they DON'T have Dawn, Lava or hot water tanks.......IIRC they just lick their paws.

jjb4900
ok, here's one from this past season.....drove all night to get to our Cabin, get there at around 3:00 a.m., run inside get dressed and grab the decoys, while inside my brother hears something metallic hit the ground and says "what was that"...I say "who cares, let's get going". I drop him off and start racing to my spot and realize something doesn't feel right, I look down and realize my wedding ring is gone, at this point I totally forgot about that metallic sound earlier, so I race back to where I dropped him off and look around like a mental patient, nothing. I then race back to the house and look all over the ground between the parking area and the house, again nothing. I'm just about to give up when I remember that sound earlier and go inside and find it in a back corner under one of the bunk beds.....needless to say I got in a little later then planned. Lawdwaz
So I'm clearly happy we don't hunt in the same areas..lol Now this is about all hunters mishaps in the predawn hours during turkey,,,no one else out there with a tale to tell,,,misstep into a swamp hole ,run in with a skunk ....hide an seek with a bear...nothing? Three years in a row: 1993, 1994 and 1995 (I could be off a year at the start) I had encounters in Pennsylvania with bears while hunting spring gobblers. Once from the truck on a desolate two-track road, once on top of a mountain why hunting mid morning and another in the PITCH dark on the way up to the top of the mountain. That time in the darkness was no fun, serious business ensued. Momma sent the cubs (little fur balls maybe 40lbs???) up a pine tree then she circled around in the stillness, trying to get my sent. She eventually did and high tailed it far enough away as I tried to decide what I wanted to do. The cubs bawled for quite awhile but stayed in the tree. After a few minutes I figured I'd beat feet back down the hill and go hunt the other side of the valley. My plan worked, I killed a jake an hour or so later. When I got back down to the truck I could still hear those cubs crying............way to much action for me. I'd rather have a close up with a bear than a rattlesnake though................ turkeyfeathers
Trips and falls is the worste I got. I love doing that. As quiet as can be and all of a sudden. Oops , I trip over a log and a verbal four letter word gets spoken aloud as I'm trying to be as stealthy as possible.
