BB gun recommendations

I am looking to pick up a plinker for my 12 year old son. We live be in a very residential area and he will be doing most of his practice at a very short range in my basement/backyard (plenty of backstop). I'm leaning toward a break barrel with a scope....anything out there worth getting around $150???

Check out The Gamo whisper not sure on the price it is a break barrel shoots pellets.You well have a blast ...

Seriously though - My BIL and my neighbor both have the GAMO Big Cat 1250 and both are pretty serious for a pellet rifle. We also live in a residential area and my neighbor has taken a few shots at a pesky woodchuck only when it is in front of his shed (shed is a backstop) and it has been right on the money out to 35 to 40 yards. The Daisy Avanti is a good starter rifle to learn to shoot with especially in the house. It is a single shot with a receiver sight and it fires BBs very accurately at short range.

seriously though. I would NEVER get a kid a BB gun. Pellets yes but no BB's. They do ricochet too easily.

When I was a kid my brother made me and I'll try to describe as best as possible. Looked like a long window box you'd plant flowers in outside your living room window . It then had a sloped steel piece angling down. Box was filled with sand to catch deflected pellets. Wooden top to hang targets from. We used to shoot for hours and hours a week. We'd light Ohio blue tip matches , cut string and put pellets thru the same hole after hole. This was with a Crosman pump .177 pistol and peep sights. I still have that pellet pistol however it has a leaky seal I'm going to look into getting fixed. I  know for sure it helped me tremendously become a better pistol shooter today. This " shooting box " wouldn't take much to build. Never had one incident in basement.

Any of you guys ever shoot your eye out ? Not out but I shot a Crossman air pistol at a empty shampoo bottle at about 20 feet and it came straight back into my eye . When I opened my eyes,the BB fell out ,I had that solid red eye thing for a little while . Too bad they don't make some kind of protective apparatus that fits over the ears and protects the eyes.

BB gun, pellet guns, cartridge guns, no matter what a kid is taught to fire first thing on the agenda is everything about safety and having a good backstop no matter what shooting range one uses. That has to be taught and stressed right from the get-go! All guns can be safe if handled with respect and fired properly.

My dad worked for Crossman for 15 years when i was a kid. I think a pump action bb gun is plenty to get basics down and enjoy shooting. Then save the rest of the budget for a cricket or Marlin model 60 semi 22 for range days. My .02

And those break actions are powerful I would worry about ricochet in basements with them

I had a pump just like this. Shooting BB's at balloons that were stapled to a wooden picnic table. about 20-25'. shot #1 and balloon moved and heard a strange metal "ting". shot #2 and the same thing. with that second shot I felt a small vibration with the "ting". The BB was coming straight back and hitting the end of the barrel. up a fraction and it could have been bad.

It's a wonder I never lost a blinker as a kid.............I must have put 5000 BB's through the Crossman 760 as a young hoodlum, a few close calls too but no permanent damage.  I still have a couple 760 guns but neither of them is the first one I had, that particular gun is in the Air Rifle Hall of Fame.

Side note; a guy I work with IS missing a blinker from a BB gun incident.  Not that its funny or anything but his older brother lost a blinker too to a BB gun also.  I guess it was a case of tit for tat??
