What kind of hawk?

I have a cam behind my friends place mounted on pine looking out over field, mostly just see what wanders by. This hawk looks like its ready to go after the cam, but there is also a lot of red squirrel running around the pine trees. Anyone know what king hawk this is?

I'd guess it's a redtailed hawk. Cool pic! Although it also looks like a chicken trying to stay out of a deep-fryer, but I'm hungry and my thoughts are wandering.

It's a red tail....The "braiding" on the breast is a dead giveaway...They are probably the most common big hawk in NY and they are voracious predators...I have seen them attack adult turkeys and adult woodchucks..

Very cool...but it looks to me like an Accipiter. We have three of them here in Western NY, the Goshawk, the Cooper's hawk and the Sharp-shinned hawk. I would guess it's an immature female goshawk. Red-tails are more soaring hawks with broad, short tails. The Accipiters have longer tails to steer with and relatively shorter wings.   And it is after those rodents!

Red-tail, but not a huge one.  The braiding is a good clue, and the tail doesn't look narrow to me.

Goshawks can flair their tail, making it appear wider. IMO...more the length...shape of the tail. I had two for pets when I was a kid.

Cool. I had redtails too. But the DEC came and took them away to the Buffalo Zoo. I was a stupid enough school kid to let the local paper see me walking down the street with a hawk on my arm. That was before there was a NYS falconery license.

I can even see the reddish color on the underside of the hawk's tail....

It is in the wide open spaces....More typical for the redtail than the forest oriented goshawk...

Sorry, I don't know care how many hawks you owned as a youth, but  that bird sure looks like a red tail to this old country boy..

I never owned one, but I have seen a LOT of them...

I stand corrected. It is a red-tailed hawk. I checked with my son and daughter-in-law who are ornithologists and they said, "Dad, totally a tail." You guys nailed it.
