The thing is; you put a claim in for something just over your deductible amount thinking "hell, I haven't had a claim in 37 years, they owe me".  So you get a check from the insurance company and have a rummy your cousin knows patch the roof, pocketing a few bucks.  6 months or a year latetr you get some water in the basement and figure WTH, I'll put in another claim.

That's two strikes against you and it goes in your homes CLUE report.

AND, you're ripe to be dropped like a hot potato and go into a risk pool.  Maybe......

Well that article was pretty interesting! I knew records of some kind were entered in a database somewhere, but had no idea this thing existed. Kind of like a carfax report for a house.

I'll say it before somebody else does - I didn't have a clue.^_^

Insurance companies are good in collecting premiums from you and that's about it.  When you put in a claim they will do their damndest to weasel their way out of not paying you anything or the least amount possible.  They ALL stink in my opinion!

Correct Steve.... They are not in the business of writing checks.

That’s the type of story I hear over and over again and the reason why I almost want to avoid calling the insurance company all together.

We pay for insurance yet for homeowners at least it seems impossible to actually use it with out it backfiring.

It really depends on your deductible. We have $1000 deductible on our homeowners so anything up to $1000 is on us. I'm handy so it's not an issue for us. It is more for if we had a fire and/or total loss of the house. I'm not sure how bad the 1st layer of shingles was but I'm willing to bet you would be fine unless it is already leaking. It shouldn't take much to slide under a couple new shingles and nail her down.

I agree with the others. Pay a couple hundred bucks and have someone patch repair it for now since your planning a full tear off in a year. Insurance companies suck, the less claims you have the better. I was dropped by geico for a broken tail light a few years ago. Had them for over 10 years and my wife backs into another car in a parking lot and they drop me over the cracked tail light.
I use Farm Family for all my insurance needs now. We have a homeowner/Farm combo to cover everything down to my new chicken coop. Liability for our egg sales and everything. And it’s cheap, about $1100 a year. Not sure if the wife’s cousin who’s our agent has anything to do with that but I don’t think I could get the amount of coverage we have any cheaper elsewhere.

That’s just what I’ll do. Get it patched for this year. The only time it ever leaked was when we had one of those 60 mpg heavy rain storms since then it’s been fine under normal conditions.

Thanks for all the input and I can’t believe how many have been dropped after a claim.

My wife was in an accident just over a year ago. Not her fault as some one rear ended her while at a red light and Liberty Mutual has been fantastic working with and for us. The SUV was repaired in just a few days and some medical bills got paid including her missed time off work and mileage. Now I know they just flipped that expense onto the other persons insurance but it still was a good experience.

wow what a nitemare to deal with insurance co. . About  2 years before  sandy allstate dropped me I panicked and called them [forget about the broker all he wanted to do was sell me life insurance] and they said oh I lived too close to the ocean I told then I live  3 mi from the ocean and a mile from the bay, I went crazy cause I had a mortgage and the mortgage co said if I don't find ins that they will and i'll have to pay big time . I called the nys insurance agency.and got no answer ,I was so lucky to find a local ins broker that got me insurance but it went from $850 to$1100. Well have dealt with metlife  which has some kinda deal with the company I work for and with aarp which is total b/s I would wind up paying MORE if I went with them and even if I bundled . So where I stand now I have national general for my autos and the Hartford for my homeowners and am paying $1400 for the house and neither will take the other so I could bundle. They are in business to make money and use any excuse to get the most out of you, The nys insurance did get back to me and said they would investigate. A few years later I got a notice that they had a class action suit against allstate  but it never went anywhere.

Surprised hearing about insurance companies dropping customers over claims. I can see for negligence but over acts of nature or occurrences that are totally out of your control, I don't get it.
I've been with Amica (homeowner's and vehicles) since around 2000. My wife has totaled two cars in that time, I had the hood on my truck shot through by a .308 (don't ask), even had a rodent chew through the wiring harness of my truck that they covered to replace the entire wiring harness. All claims paid with no questions asked and in a very efficient manner. Guess I've just been lucky.

We’ve also got Amica and they have been fantastic through several big disasters. We even got a nice check for ice damming damage
