maybe the tags were removed for a canned hunt on a ranch however big?  i doubt somebody would want to hunt something with a tag still in it's ear under the context i'm thinking.  can't imagine some would live a few more years. they might die from antler infection, physical stress from the rack size, or maybe injured or killed from a more robust naturally bred deer capable of handling the elements and buck interactions.
