Anyone going out for the Crow opener Saturday?  I will be out for my first opening day. Usually do not start until the migrations after Christmas, but Iam seeing big numbers in the feedlots and want to try some early shooting. Will mix in some pigeons decoys for a mixed bag. This pigeon hunting is so addictive

Got a few this morning before the pigeons started flying. Ol foxpro got them comin in pretty good

I went 2nd weekend. Only had 5 fly over but no takers.

Crows are really starting to flock up and move. Huge feeding flocks in the mornings over cut corn and soybeans.  I need to tagvout out on a buck up north so I can get in these crows before the snow flies for good

Crows were filthy thick yesterday morning. Couldn’t set up in the field we wanted bc of the mud...plan b was hiding under 2 huge earth scrapers on another farm. We managed 22 over dekes and the foxpro. When we drove by the first field there had to be 3000 crows feeding in it.

Spent the morning and afternoon scouting. My one trusty spot had about 1000 crows feeding. Got the blood pumping. Got the dekesreafy..fresh batteries in the Foxpro...and waiting to get on em.

Have yet to get out but scouted the last 2 mornings. Thankfully the birds are back to their normal feed runs in the morning at 3 of my primary spots. Saw several hundred at each location.  Can’t wait till Friday morning!!

Had a decent shoot this morning of 23 crows...had to use hand calls bc the wires to the battery holder on the New Foxpro decided to snap off the solder...NOT HAPPY. 

 

Afternoon pigeon hunt at a local dairy was tremendous. Killed 35 in an hour and a half. Had most of them not fkown over the feed bunkers it would have been insane. There were swarms of 150-200 bird flocks all afternoon.

It is strictly pest control for the farmers. The pigeons are city/bridge birds that fly out to the dairys to feed. I won’t eat them. And Crows...tried it once...never again.

Is it just me or are crows smart?  I had no problem killing fox or coyotes calling them in but the 4 or 5 x calling crows they would never come with in range..........

Crows they say have the intelligence of a chimp more or less yes there smart they also can recognize the faces of different humans  they remember.

Crows are incredibly smart and often send me home talking to myself. If you do not conceal yourself well, then forget about even trying. You can have the best calls and decoys money can buy but if they see you or something they do not like, its game over. Download the documentary "The Secret Life of Crows". It will give you a whole new perspective of what we are dealing with.

Got out in the HIGH WIND and snow this morning.  Killed 22.  Not a lot of birds this morning but the ones that were around came in low through low and screaming through the snow . Going to check out the pigeons when the wind dies down in a little while.

I have read where crows have a strong family history. Many generations flock together; unless some of you get to them first, LOL.

18 this morning in a new spot. Will know better where to set up next time. Off to chase pigeons now.

Ty.  Pigeons were slim today. They are spread out over various farms and not at our main winter farm. We killed 6.

18 this morning   Tough targets in the wind and had to adjust lead. The walk out and in was brutal. The ebtire field was a sheet of ice.  Now out to chase down some pigeons

They are smart and they can live quite a few years, I have had what I believe to be the same three Crows living in my area for many years. I plow out my barnyard where my chicken coups are and put out grain for the chickens, those three crows will watch for me to do this and come in and feed with the chickens. If it is real blustery out and I have a hood over my head they will stay up in the trees until I leave the area before they come down. If I have just a hat on they can recognize me and will come down when I am out tossing grain. I have hunted and killed a lot of crows in my days but these three have a free pass as I have seen them many times mobbing and driving off Hawks hanging around looking for a chicken dinner.

Killed 24 this morning. Then headed over to the pigeon farm but they were scarce.

Slow morning. The big roosts are breaking up. Got 6 with the new A5. Will try the big dairy tomorrow as there was a fair number dropping in there late morning. Season is almost over!!
