Salmon_Run
Congrats on the bear picture. I believe your tree damage was caused by a pileated woodpecker searching for insects. The damage has no claw marks I could see, was too high up the tree and the tree looked damaged by insects and dead.
Salmon_Run
Bear marking would look like this and not circular into the tree with chips taken out laying in a pile under the damage. Hope this helps you out, and you'r able to secure more pictures of your visitor soon Edited September 11, 2018 by Salmon_Run

Steuben Jerry
Was going to say the same thing as Salmon Run. Especially that pic with the pile of chips on the ground.
Dom
This tree scratching could be from porcupine and not only from a pecker.
crappyice
Big FootCome on man. You are better than that. Squatches don’t scratch- they uproot and replant (upside down)trees of that size. stubborn1VT
I would wager a fair amount that the trees were 1) rotten 2) worked on by a pileated woodpecker 3) taken down by a combination of wind & gravity.
