Help me identify an old flag

Below is pictured an older flag, ł believe it to be Canadian but am not clear on what era it is from or any historical significance. 

Any help is appreciated, ł know you can't see the whole flag and unfortunately ł don't have and cannot get any more photos soon.

The flag is red with a small "union flag" in the top left.

Accompanying this was what appeared to be an American flag with a grey field behind the stars. Didn't get a photo nor was it unfolded enough to count the stars.

Don't know but  probably Canadian or British, 

You should try doing a Google reverse image search .

Did the American flag look old? I know some of the blues used on the flags were pretty crappy and could fade to a grey. Other than that I have never seen one with a grey background. 

The U.S. Flag was also old, my guess is late 1800's or early 1900's.

The field looks to have intentionally been grey.

ł hope to get better photos in the next week or so.
