Joe Paterno - Fired - Thoughts?

Why wasn't all this taken care of when the post grad coach or current qb coach walked in on the guy molesting the kid in the first place!?

And why isn't he being investigated or fired for not reporting to the police if he was the one who saw it happening? I know if I was ever in that situation where I saw something like that happening, I would have jumped and beaten the perv while calling 911 on my cell phone and held him until police arrived.

These kids were from broken homes... He started a children foundation which basically gave him unlimited access to kids with issues.

Regarding the Karate, that's a great idea, and something I'll be doing with my daughter once she gets old enough.

That all helps but the one thing that you must have with your children is communication. They have to feel comfortable talking about anything with you. You have to assure them that you will be open and understanding. Being molested at an early age and feeling ashamed or guilty can take a heavy toll on a person. Talk to your kids and keep an open line of communication and then use the Karate chop!

Burt you are 110% right. Open communication with your kids is the most important thing. So far I have that with my kids. I will certainly do whatever I can in my power to continue to keep that line open. But I've also told them if you feel you are in a situation where you are in fear for your life, or someone else's, etc., then you will be justified in doing what you have to do. By the way, my kids know that the martial arts they are learning is not about showing off and impressing your friends. They are learning about self control and knowing they will have the ability to use it if and when necessary to protect themselves or others.

Agreed on most accounts. Steve is right, these kids were manipulated, not attacked (well you know what I mean), however the arts teaches kids how to stand up for what's right. That's key in a situation like this one.

I highly recommend Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (aka Gracie Jiu-jitsu) for self defense. It's designed for smaller people to overcome a larger opponent and is focused on ground fighting (even from your back) Groundfighting is still the most neglected phase of a fight even today. Why is beyond me. I think it's the movies, but here's some vids so you can all see for yourself.

Guys, at least supplement your training with some form of wrestling/grappling, Make sure your kids school let's them spar live (randori). Not just kata's.

and here's a pic of Royce Gracie (1st UFC champ) and I just for you guys!

John, I started both my kids at 5 y.o. through the Nassau County Police Athletic League. My daughter is almost 15 and my son is now 10 1/2. I don't want this to sound like I'm selling you something but they are located all over Nassau. The past two years they changed the curriculum from basic Kenpo (simple forms & basic self defense) to TSD (Tactical Solutions for Defense) http://www.pfs-liny.com/index.html It is essentially street fighting, using anything and everything you have or can find as a weapon to disable your aggressor. The instructor in my area is Andrew Hall. He is a good friend of mine and he has been teaching for the last 25 years and many blackbelts have come out of his program. I don't know how old your daughter is but you should look into it.

She is 5 months old, so its a bit early :)

They actually do spar with full gear on and the instructor lets them have at it to see what it feels like although it is mostly controlled sparring. They also have learned ground fighting/grappling, full mounts, side mounts, arm bars, etc. They also learned how to use sticks as well. So I think they are on the right track. I actually prefer this curriculum a lot better than the old one. He's teaching them how to survive in the street. Its exciting watching my 10 y.o. take down a 16 y.o. 175lb kid with only a few moves.

Back to the topic ........ Paterno was told about something and when nothing was done should have elevated it . These "kids" that were rioting on Campus for their "God Coach" should have a taste of what Sandusky gave to those poor boys . Then maybe they would get their heads on straight .

It's all about money . When the problem was elevated , they probably thought the school would lose money if this news got out as a lot of rich Alumni donate to Penn State .
