I got a text from one of my buddys on the farm the other night. His daughter got her first buck, a nice 4, and his one son bagged a really nice 8. We are having a banner year for bucks on the farm, only 1 of us left that hasnt taken one. I want to see him drop Hayrake. If he doesnt, I hope to in ML season!

I have quite a few friends that are girls. Some of them are really good looking, and I have never tried anything with them. I have others that I have already had...um...relations with and they are still friends of mine.

This past weekend was a pretty good one for me. I ended up at a poker game until 3am on Friday night, so when Saturday morning rolled around, I said the heck with it and stayed home. I got all of my venison ground up, packaged and then put a nice package of 30ish lbs of meat together for the manager of the farms I hunt. Sunday morning, a friend of mine was meeting me at my place so I could take her down to the farm and see if we couldnt knock down another deer or two. She got there around 5:30 and we loaded up and took off. For the morning, we went to a double hang on set that has produced alot of venison this year, albeit all of the kills had been in the evening. We heard some deer moving through the thick bedding area just 50 yards away, but didnt see anything once it got light out. We heard a shot come from the farm and I got a text that one of the other guys had dropped a buck over on the other side of the farm. I decided around 9:30 to get out of the stand and take a slow walk around the perimeter of the cow pasture to see if we couldnt find some feeding or bedded deer. We ended up kicking up 3 does, but that was about it. We wandered over to meet up with the other guys, and see what was on the ground. It was a small 6, and was the guy's first buck. After congrats, and shooting the breeze for a bit, we headed down to check a trail cam and go back to the truck.

 

We headed down to the local diner and had a bite to eat, then stopped by my buddy's place to put a plan together for the afternoon. I thought the guys might be wanting to do some drives on other properties, but everyone seems to be about deer'ed out for the year. I decided we would head down to the swamp, and sit on the last standing corn for the afternoon. We got down there and got set up, and what rolls out in to the corn, but the combine! Sweet! We were setup perfectly to intercept deer heading from the field to the woods. After the farmer hit the edges of the field and emptied the combine, he started on his long rows. On his second pass in our direction, 2 big does and a doe fawn blasted out of the corn just ahead of the combine. I watched as they ran out into the neighboring hay field and headed right toward the corner where I was posted. All three ended up 40 to 45 yards from my stand, and when all was said and done, my Mossberg 500 20 ga put one of them on the ground. I climbed down to make sure she was dead, and then headed for the truck to put my shotgun away and grab the muzzle loader. I moved my friend to the stand I had been sitting in, as its one of the better stands, and I figured it had the best chance of more deer going by it in the afternoon. I hopped up in another stand and we sat out the rest of the afternoon. No more deer for the day. We got my doe taken care of, loaded up and headed home for a backstrap dinner. It was a great end to the gun season.

 

I will probably get 1, maybe 2 hunts in next weekend for muzzle loader season, but thats about it. At this point my score is 6 deer. I gave one away to the farm manager, and have 5 left in my freezer. I wont be shooting any more does next weekend. I will be out for one deer in particular, to finish up my 3 year chess match with him. Hayrake. Hopefully the rest of the corn is gone by then, as it gives him less places to feed under cover. Hopefully I can finally put him down. It sure would be some great icing to one hell of a deer season!

I'm about "deer'd out" myself. I figure I have one good day of hunting left in me for deer season this coming weekend. Family obligations and personal projects I have lined up that I want to get started on are helping me come to grips with the close of another season. Normally I enjoy MZ more than regular season.

Same here phade. Im just burnt out this year. Lots of other stresses have played into it as well.

You guys think the birn out is due to achery season starting on 10/1?  We were talking about it down at camp this past weekend..  You tack on 2 additional weeks/weekends on the front end of the season and the burnout seems to hit in early December.

 

This year I said I wasn;t going to hunt the first couple of weeks (especially if it is warm), but you wait all year for the time to come and it is hard not to be out there.

Nope. I was working on stuff almost daily since late August, and at least weekly since July. I dont remember burning out like this last year.

I don't think the early opener was a contributor at all. If anything, the earlier, colder weather was a bigger deal. I don't mind the cold, but it gets old fast if you are not getting onto the bucks you want to target regardless of how you vary your tactics.

I have been getting a bit worn down as well last couple days. No way I will not be out at all opportunity though. 7 days left and then can not hunt deer again for 9 months. ick

Well, I didnt get out at all for late muzzleloader this year. Now my attention will be on squirrels and coyotes. This weekend I will head down to the farms and pull my trail cams for a while. I will also be starting to loosen stand straps, etc, but may wait on that until the snow goes away a bit.

This snow and the temps sucks. Feels like Feb and not December.

 

I got out for one morning of MZ. Talk about a giant letdown.

 

I have quite a few cams still out, and in places I don't want to venture with this snow and temp. It looks like a slight above freezing weekend as far as the highs go, so maybe I can sneak out one day and try to grab them all.

 

Bonus is I have a cam and two blinds to retrieve at the one spot where there are a few black squirrels. I'll be toting the .410 and sitting for the first 20-30 minutes of light to pick one off and then get busy packing.

I have this belief with squirrels that I only see them in droves when I have nothing on me while checking cams or moving stands, etc. When I set out to find them darn things, I am lucky if I come home with one of them. I'm the world's worst squirrel hunter, lol.

lol same here. We just have so darn many of them down there, and nobody hunts them. They need a good thinning out. If you want some, Ill let you know when I go and I can bring some back for ya.

Saturday I went out to the farm for a little squirrel population control, to get some work done on stands and pull my cams to clean them up and dry them out. Well, almost as soon as I got there, the rain started, so I said the heck with it, Ill just work on stands. We made the rounds to almost all of the stands on the one section of the farm. I pulled safety straps down, removed screw in steps, and loosened straps on the stands and ladder steps. We also made note of the stands we wanted to take down and maintain this year. While we were at one of the stands, I noticed a gorgeous layer of fog that had rolled in, making for a great snap shot...

 

 

After checking the stands, I pulled my trail camera and headed to the truck. By the time I left, I was soaked to the bone, so I figured Id head up to the other farm to grab my other camera. I was planning to drive right down to the plots and make it quick, but when I got there, I found the whole bottom was flooded out....

 

 

 

 

I parked to check the water depth on the trail. Yeah, it almost went right over my boots. Youll notice it wasnt that deep over the road, but on either side it was over a foot deep. I wasnt gonna chance it so I left the truck on the road and walked in. I noticed that the food plot was starting to get a little stinky, like the radishes or turnips, whatever they are, were starting to get a little rotten. Pulled my cam and headed home. I still have to go through the cards to see what I have on there.

Man, its been a while since Ive updated this. Havent had a ton going on though, just some scouting, trail cutting, maintaining the farms, etc. This past weekend we got 4 of our plots tilled up with the 5 foot King Cutter 2 tiller my buddy got this year. We have a good little operation going with the tractor, tiller, side by side and roller. We also acquired a sprayer this year, which i have a little work to do on, but it will be good to go for next year. We were thinking about 2 more plots this year, but we are going to spend time working the ground in the 2 new ones, which are both going to be planted in clover in the spring. The 4 we have done now will stay in annuals.

The first plot we did in a mix of winter peas and turnips. Second one is Dwarf Essex Rape and Groundhog Radish. Third is some buck on a bag Rape, PTT, red clover mix. Last one is another buck on a bag Peas, beans, and a couple of other things that we threw some Groundhog Radish in with because we werent sure how well it would do this late.

The tiller sure made things easy, and combined with the power of the 90hp JD, chewed through everything we threw at it. Root balls and everything. I figure we are going to till again in the spring and plant some rye or clover, then till that in mid summer and go back to our "deer candy" for the fall. After those two additional tills, the plots soil should be perfect, and easy to work.heres a few pics and a vid from Sunday's work.
