Here is where our taxes go for Education

Recommended Posts

I promised I would let this topic fade away but I went to www.seethroughny.net and found out that the Kindergarten teachers in my school district typically make $110,000. a year and it got my blood boiling all over again. One of the gym teachers makes over a $160,000.-

People don't realize how bad it really is out there.

thats freakin insane!

and we should keep this thread alive...its thru our complacency that the teachers unions and politicos have been able to sneak this all by. most people have no idea of just how bad this situation has really gotten, its been done right under the publics noses whilst we were all out trying to find a way to make the money to pay the damn taxes. thats why alot of people dont vote on the school budgets, their either busy working or too tire from working to show up after work to vote! unlike the teachers who start at 8 and then you see them running out of school with their breifcases at 2:30 before the damn buses even pull out!!!!!

This is todays local newspaper, http://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/cuomo-escalates-pension-battle-1.3598188#disqus_thread

Here is the best line, "

The biggest municipal employee union hoisted a giant inflatable pig on the Capitol steps -- saying it portrayed "greedy Wall Street" types..."

Sounds more like the pig represents teachers salaries and benefits.

Those are some awfully high salaries. I looked into my district and we are nowhere near $160,000 salaries for our teachers, it is upstate NY however not LI. The highest paid teacher is making around 120,000 they teach technology(shop) and driver ed after school. He has probably been there 30 years or more.

I dont have a problem with my school taxes, they only went up $82.80 since last year. I have children that attend and receive a great education. Our school has been ranked in the top 100 in the nation and always is battling for the top spot against other local schools. We will see what this year brings with a 2.3 million loss of aid from the state to the district.

Seems to me Long Island and Upstate NY are operating on two different levels.

Did you check the salaries through www.seethroughny.net? I don't see how you can say that a $120K a year to teach shop and drivers ed part-time is not a lot of money. Don't forget that the retiring teacher will get a pension of 50% of their pay and lifetime health benefits. That eqautes to over 2 million dollars should the teacher collect for another 30 years. In reality that teacher makes $180K a year and is simply waiting to collect the extra $60K when he stops working.

Do a google search, I can guarantee average income in your area is around $60K a year and those workers won't get a pension when retiring.

The school rankings at this time are nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Every school tweaks the numbers to make there school look great. That is why the governor is going to require a standarized test for all students and teacher rankings. That way you will honestly know where your school falls in line.

I did use see through ny for the salaries, the other top earners were all administrative. The town I live in has average income of $85,000 and 21% earn %150,000 or more, boy I feel poor now.

I still am happy with the school district here and what I pay for the education of my kids including the $82.80 school tax increase we had last year.

Wow!! You must live in a nice town. Sounds like Greenwich, CT.

Those numbers are very high. Then again maybe most of your residents are teachers. Average income per person here on LI is probably around $75K a year. Average teachers salaries are around $90K a year.

What a topic!!! Let's just say this: my folks are in their mid 80's and I don't have any kids. At what point do my folks, who are on social security, get a break from paying school taxes, since they are on a fixed income? And what about me, no kids at all, and fronting the same school taxes as people with kids? (and who get a tax break from them at the end of the year by the way, so what are they actually paying for school taxes?) This entire School tax thing should be based on a percentage..............if you have kids in school, you should be be paying MORE!!!!

I don't want to hear the song and dance about people paid for me when I was in school, look at the salaries back then and what they paid, compared to todays rate and amount!! Something has to change..............

were upstate are you, only an 82 dollar school tax increase? the average school tax increase for the Minisink school district increased 450.00 bucks. thats if your school taxes were only 5K. if your paying 6 or 8 grand for your school tax bill then your increase has gone up, well do the math.

Your numbers sound a bit off. Can you tell me what school district you are referring to? Are you a teacher by chance?

i often have to wonder when i walk around and look at my land and my home, my tractors and cars, walk thru my barn and look at all the stuff i have acquired over the years of hard back breaking work, more hours of labor that can be imagined by most, taking chances in life with my hard earned money and being lucky a couple of times and having wins that have outnumbered the loses. dont get me wrong here, im not trying to bragg but i did it all on my own.

never had the luxury of security nets, or saying i need more money for what i want and expecting the public to cough up the funds so i could do it...how must it feel for an individual who goes thru life just knowing everthing will be takin care of for you, and that you will be OK when your very neighbors homes are foreclosing and retires are going back to work at McDonalds to support your life as a teacher. and then to be able to come on a public forum and say, well if you cant pay yer taxes to support me then maybe your in over your head????

this is a major part of the problem with our country and i just cant help but thinking this is all going to end badly when people start to think like that..sorry for the rant!

The real kick in the azz is that if you stop paying your property or school taxes... regardless of the reason... your house can be sold out from under you... doesn't matter how much you spent on the house... how much money you've put in it... doesn't even matter that you own it outright with no mortgage... the government can take it away from you... tell me what is fair about that??

I find it kind of odd that so many blame the teachers for the salary they make. It seems to me that they are not the ones who approved those slaries they only requested them and it was the School boards that approved them. It's the same with all of the government employees. The Politicians approve the pay that the employees recieve. Simply put if they didn't want to pay that salary all they had to do was say no to it and there is nothing the teachers could do about it except to go to arbitration where a political appointee decides the case. No it's not the workers fault that they recieve the salary they do it is the fault of the politicians. I will fault no working person for seeking to make a better income, in the end if the government didn't want to pay those salaries then those employees could have sought work elsewhere. I have a feeling that it is the politicians who are driving this hatred against the employees and there is always a reason behind it. They mnust want to rape the employees not to give money back to the taxpayers but instead to keep it for their own use. Those of you who run a buisness know how it works. Your employee requests a raise and you either approve or deny it, does anybody really think it's different for the government employees? They can't even strike they have no strike no lockout clauses in all of their contracts.

its all about a political system that for decades has been groping for votes with promises that are unsustainable, and by doing this they have set up alot of people, teachers and taxpayers for a bad ending to this story...

This is the info regarding my inaccurate school tax increase you wanted to know about. 2010-11 it cost me 3535.20 and in 2011-12 it cost me 3618.00. Assessed value is 180,000 so I multiplied 180 times the rate for the given year. So the increase was $82.80.

Bethlehem

School Tax Rates

Listed below are the school tax rates for the past several years. Tax rates are per $1,000 of assessed property value.

2011-12 $20.10 2010-11 $19.64

2009-10 $19.10 2008-09 $18.79

2007-08 $18.09

Sorry the formatting got screwed up.

i dont hear anything about the unsustainable pension and healthcare promises that we will never be able to pay for existing workers. hell NY has 10s of thousands of employees working today that still have years and years on the job????

then you read about Coumo's solutions which nip a little here and alittle there and only on future employees? this state is sunk and everything i read shows how the political scum that runs this state wont dare mess with the unions.

Anyone hear the Cuomo commercial? NY is #1 in the US for per student dollars spent and is ranked 38 out of 50 states for percentage of students that graduate... hmmm... yeah, lets just keep throwing money into the school system... I mean, it's working so well.. don't you think?
