  3. He caught it while fishing off the wall at Sylvan Beach. Submitted photo Sgt. Brian Shapiro, a Fort Drum soldier recently home from a tour in Afghanistan, caught at released this large sturgeon recently while fishing on Oneida Lake. He caught it off the wall at Sylvan Beach. It was about 4 feet long and weighed nearly 50 pounds. View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

  4. I don't think they should allow the rifles at all. they are unsafe. I think it is much better to allow arms like the 22-250-...30-06...300Win Mag in a pistol...lol. I can walk out my front door and use my Encore in a pistol configuration but not in a rifle config ...in the same calibers. DOesn't make sense to me.

  7. I agree with Bubba on this one. Whatever centerfire round you are the most comfortable shooting is the one that will work best for you.

  14. I would shoot what you feel comfortable with. A 100 grain sierra will kill a deer easily. I personally use a 25-06 with a 115 grain bullet. Most tell me it is too light for deer also. Put the bullet in the right place with any center fire and the deer is yours. The idea that you can make a poor shot with a bigger caliber and still have the deer seems a bit over confident to say the least. Practice a lot get good and fill your freezer. The only reason I carry a heavier caliber on occasion where I hunt is the fact we have bears there also. I would be sketchy with the 243 or 25-06 around those guys.

  16. Yup! and that sure does mean a whole lot than some hack-job by a news reporter. Relative to who Nugent speaks for, or doesn't, I will say that I really don't go out of my way to act like a loyal fan ...... because I'm not. However, I will also say that I don't go out of my way to throw him under the bus either. I find no benefit to hunters to do that. As far as I am concerned, anyone who wants to devote that much of their life and energies toward speaking up for hunters and gun owners, (When almost all hunters won't even bother to pick up a pen and write their opinions or hunting concerns to legislators), is probably not someone that I feel the need to tear down. I guess I just don't get the motivations for some of this spite that we seem to enjoy heaping on people that do speak up for us. I see the American hunter as being the most self-destructive set of individuals in society as they seem to get some perverse joy out of destroying those individuals and organizations that volunteer and serve as advocates. Really, I just don't get it. Maybe I don't necessarily like his abrasive style of speaking. Maybe I don't like his personality. Maybe he does make some mistakes along the way (don't we all). Maybe I don't like his music ....lol, but I have yet to hear much of what he says that I disagree with. I don't have to like the guy, or like much about him in order to not go out of my way to try to get people to stop listening to his positive views toward hunters and hunting. I don't see that sort of thing as being beneficial to me as a hunter and gun owner. Why would it be? Also, I would say that as long as we demand absolute perfection from our advocates, we needn't wonder why we have so few people saying anything positive about hunting and gun ownership. We do it to ourselves everytime.

  18. No, I'm just saying that every so often there seems to be a feeding frenzy mentality that develops where for no particular reason that I can determine, a rather innocent post receives a strange out-of-scale negative or hostile reaction. We can certainly ask for more details and perhaps even offer alternative opinions of what may be going on there without declaring skepticism about the whole story, or declaring the story to be a little thin, etc. I don't know, I just think that it is not a great way to promote participation. It's not a big deal, but it just struck me a bit odd the way the whole reaction to the post went.
