NYBOW, NYCROSSBOW, NYMUZZLELOADER, NYTRAPPING. BLAH DE BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!! I am just about sick of all these specialty hunting gangs and that is all they are. Thugs. How about a NY hunting and fishing in general orginization seeking to open up new opportunities for all sportsmanl!!! If these supposed smart people dont pull their heads out of there arses soon we may not have hunting for anything in the next 20 yrs. So lets all lay off the PETER measuring and get down to the business of opening opportunities up for all NY sportsman.3 points

I have never hunted Elk nor do I intend to but ......... I would think I would use a heavier arrow and broadhead . Elk are much larger than deer and I would think a heavier broadhead would pack more of a punch .2 points

Visit a few gun shops...handle several different guns; When you find one that feels right, then you can think about caliber. A .30-30 in a lever gun makes a good deer rig...A .35 is even better. If I was looking for a bolt action deer gun (whitetail only), I'd consider .260 and 7mm-08. For an all-around bolt gun, I'd think .308 or .30-06. My opinions.......2 points

to add to Elmo's post. I would really do two things. One has been touched on and that is to handle as many guns and type of guns that you can. Second I would sit down and list what you want from the gun. How far do you anticipate shooting. how much will you be shooting. what $$$ factors are there for the gun priuchase and the ammo purchases. Are you willing to buy used or is New your pick. will you be trying optics or iron sights. Wat type of hunting do you think you may be doing? alot of walking? stand hunting?FIelds? thick brush on the land you plan on hunting? Any questions you can think of. The answers will help form your pick or lead to more questions. next for my 2 cents on the caliber. I started rifle hunting with the 30-06 because it is what my father used. If I had a child hunting I would probably not go that route anymore. I would also agree with Elmo I think. .308 win. easy to find ammo, wide range of bullets. surpluss FMJ can be had at reasonable price for plinking. moderate recoil.1 point

I've talked to few people who are new to shooting and/or hunting. Every single one of them seem to fall in love with bigger and further. I guess from watching too many movies and playing too many video games. I betcha if money was not an issue, they would try to hunt deer with a .50 BMG or a .338 Lapua Magnum. I'll be completely honest, I was the same way though the most recoil I've shot so far is the 7mm rem mag which is a touch harder than the 30-06. After going into the woods a few times and spending some time at the range, that macho bravado is now gone. I also realized that it's going to be rare for me to shoot beyond 200 yards. I actually prefer rimfires and the 223 when at the range. I enjoy the challenge of trying to get a pin point accurate shot without much over kill. I use 308 during big game season though.1 point

I don't think CCC did, he made the point you should have in one post. I'm not going to get in a great debate but no way you can honestly say that your intent was to just let him know it was illegal or you could have simply said "not sure if you are aware but it is illegal to use bait, or attractents of any kind in NY for whitetails" instead your first post you made a comment to suggest that but yet make him feel inferior but not just stating the law, you baited the post for others to chime in and bust on him. If you say otherrwise I think you are fooling only yourself. You did state the rules in the 2nd post but again it's overkill once you state the law leave it at that or just turns poeple away because I'm sure he doesn't feel like he just learned a valuable lesson, probably feels more like he got kicked out of the boys club. Hey man I'm sure you are a great guy I have seen many of your posts ad appreciate them I'm just saying it always seems like sites like this end of getting crapped up because people get to uptight about things and are way to oppionated and honestly by me entering into this mini debate I'm doing the same. Good luck with the upcoming season I hope you do great.1 point

What I meant was, I'm pretty sure the guy and everyone else knows mineral licks are illegal, its not really all that tough to know that, so why beat up on every single post people put up, it's not like DEC is going to see you scold someone and give you a medal. Even if you want to inform them, thats fine, PM them or something but dont start the same "great debate" over and over and over again. Maybe I'm that only one thinking this but I highly doubt it. And all I meant about the cell phone or speeding etc. is simply that people break the law everyday all day and obvisouly we know about it but there is no need to tell someone like they don't necessarily already know. And I think there are many sportsman on here that follow the rules myslef included but again, we are all on here becuase we love the outdoors and share a passion, there really isn't the extra need to beat up on someone who is posting pics and discourage them from future posts, their mineral block can only get them in trouble not you so let the cards fall how they may.1 point

I think that public union members should be banned from voting for their self interest at the expense of taxpayers. Private sector employees don't get to vote for their benefits so why should public employees vote for their's? If things were on the level only those who pay the tab should be able to vote. Private sector employees create money to pay the benefits of public employees. Public union employees make nothing, but are better compensated than the people who pay for their benefits. We can't last as a nation if we continue to pay for benefits when we don't have the money. California today voted to cut benefits of public employees and the Walker win in WI may be the turning point. Let's hope so!!!!! JMHO As Obama always say's pay your fair share, well the public unions should follow their leader. Hopefully to the unemployment line.1 point

Both parties are working together and have been for years. They are just not working together for us, ratherto empower themselves.1 point

Incidentally the politicians determine the size of government not the unions. If there are too many working for the government than you have only the politicians to blame.1 point

Ditto. He can't because he's too busy working like the rest of us. Did anyone find it strange that all the news channels were claiming the race was too close to call? How is a 60% to 40% too close? I thought Palin nailed it on fox. (yep, I used Palin, nailed, and fox in a sentence ) http://video.foxnews.../1675571731001/ Anyone catch the woman on either Hannity or O'reilly with Juan Williams? She said something like " We can't go on half (of us) making and half taking." A unionized middle class can not afford itself.1 point

The seat on the Bushmaster is almost just like the one on my Viper. Its not the typical sling seat that can pinch or be very uncomfortable. They are extremely comfortable, and known to be some of the best out there.1 point
