  1. I stopped by yesterday to show a buddy of mine the turkey that I had just killed on his farm and he told me he had something for me. He went to his truck and pulled out the shed antler of a buck that I call "Little Freak Nasty". I had picked up his left antler back in December and had given up finding the match to it. He was out herding up cows earlier in the week and found it stuck up in the branches of an apple tree right behind the barn!!! The set has 14 scorable points with another that's broken off and 4 more stickers under an inch. He's got really awesome flattened/palmated beam tips. I ended up trading him a 30 pack of beer for it...LOL. Can't wait to see what LFN is gonna look like this year @ 4 years old!!!

  3. I am so excited for him! My husband took his first turkey today, and his first game critter other than squirrels. I should probably give a short backstory... I grew up hunting with my dad and I love spending time in the woods with the people I love. My husband grew up in an anti-hunting family, and he wasn't sure about the sport when we became a couple. I introduced him slowly and taught him what it was about, and cleared out the stereotypes and whatnot, and he grew to love it! People actually seem to get a kick that I got him into hunting and not the other way around. He's been hunting with us now for the last several years. He's had few chances at turkeys, mostly in the fall, but he was still learning and didn't know if it was safe to take the shot so he didn't. Today we were hunting on a lease that my uncles are on, with permission. They only deer hunt so they don't mind us spring turkey hunting up there. After a day of hunting hard and not hearing a peep, we were just on our way out, walking down a logging road at around 11. My husband hurt his knee yesterday and was in need of a rest and I knew I had to get home and start working on dinner for my mom so we were leaving a bit early. I stopped near a small clearing (before trudging down the road in plain sight) and gave a few last 'desperation yaps' and was surprised to get an answer from two gobblers. It was very hard to tell the distance because the wind was simply howling at that point in the morning, but I had a gut feeling they were pretty close, so I had us dive up into the woods and set up on the small clearing. I waited for the wind to temporarily die down and called just a little bit more, quietly. No answer, but I shut right up and waited. The wind kicked right back up again and it was gusting pretty hard, maybe 30-40mph. I was scared the wind would have them extra spooky even if they came in to us, and I was feeling extra spooky and must have checked for dead limbs overhead a dozen times. Yikes! It was actually snowing on us at one point, strangely enough. About 15 minutes later, a pair of hens came across the clearing. I was so excited just to see them! I must confess-- I don't know if the birds around here are just extra tough or if I am just not good at hunting them but I've never been able to connect with a spring turkey before. Fall birds-- yes, but we don't often even get any gobbles out of the local birds and they are a very tough hunt for me. So even seeing those hens was a delight. Seconds later, two jakes popped out and it was clear that they were the double gobbles we heard. It was hard for me to make a beard on the first, but the second one had a 4-5" beard sticking out for sure, so I guided my husband onto him and told him it was a legal bird if he wanted him. I don't know who was more excited-- him or I! When the larger jake got in range I putted softly to get him to stick his head up. Well, the setup was perfect and it was a safe and clean shot so he took it and the jake went down cleanly. What a blessing this bird is! I am so proud of him and I know he took joy in this. I cleaned the bird when we got home (after getting mom's dinner started, whew) and am happy to do a nice tail mount for him. I know it is 'just' a jake but this experience has been pretty awesome for us both and we're super thankful that we can hunt these beautiful birds.

  5. May 8th, 2013 Rick McDermott Gallivan Signature.JPG DJV_Sig_sd049a[1].BMP Ryan Signature.TIF 491 Albion Cross Rd Pulaski, NY 13142 Dear Mr. McDermott, We are writing to invite you to provide comments at a legislative forum on the appropriate manner to regulate the use of crossbows as hunting implements in relation to the proposals included in S. 1699-A, A. 283, and A. 1362. Except for use by the severely disabled, crossbows ceased being legal hunting implements on January 1, 2013. For the two prior years, crossbows were legal hunting implements only during big game firearm seasons. At the same time, many neighboring states have made crossbows legal hunting implements during archery seasons. The purpose of this hearing is to gather input from the sportsman’s community and related interest groups as to how they believe crossbows should be regulated as hunting implements. The hearing will take place in the State Capitol, Room 124, from 10:00-11:30 A.M, on May 22nd. Oral statements will be limited to 5-10 minutes, depending on attendance. Written statements will also be accepted in addition or in lieu of oral statements. Time permitting, we will open the floor to members of the public following invited presenters. Please RSVP by May 20, 2013 to Todd Aldinger who can be reached at [email protected] or 716.907.4076. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Patrick M. Gallivan David J. Valesky Senator 59th District Senator 53rd District Sean Ryan Aileen M. Gunther Member of Assembly, 149th District Member of Assembly, 100th District

  7. Not my favorite thing either but I have to keep up with the neighbors. I have a pretty big lawn but my son usually does half and I do the other, so its not too bad. The lady (nut job) across the street up and moved out in the middle of the night, about 3 weeks ago so now me and my next door neighbor take turns cutting her front lawn so it doesn't get out of control. My wife mentioned buying a couple hanging flower baskets to but on the lady's porch so burglars don't think its abandoned......Nut job #2.

  8. My lawn is natural! I hate yard work and mowing!! I have a huge lawn it tales me almost 2 hours on the Scag just to mow it and another hour to weed whack it. I got pretty dandelions, crab grass, clover, wild strawberries and a zillion other kinds of weeds in it. Heck you may even find some real grass there! I can not wait till it gets burned out and stops growing and the fall when the leaves fall to smother it!! I would rather be fishing, hunting or poking needles in my eyes than lawn work!! lol

  12. After taking a friend's son to this spot over the youth weekend, we saw this bird in there but couldn't close the deal that day. He looked like a good bird then. We went back there and after some light calling the bird flew down and was gobbing walking away. I moved up to close the distance and after a short wait he headed back to where he heard the calling. He was a "long beard" measuring 10.75 inches with 1" spurs. One of my best birds yet.

  17. Glad you have an extra arm ..It's much handier than having an extra of some other body parts... I mean, who needs 2 or 3 belly buttons ? Reminds me of a girl I used to date.. She had 3 breasts....One grew in the middle of her back... She was my favorite girl to slow dance with.... She had to pay a BUNDLE for those custom made bras, though....

  20. If you prep it right you could plant anything. If you have deer on in your yard they will use your plot

  21. The 12 that scored 126 0/8. The other 2 are 8 the elk is 4x4. The elk was done by fox studio. The deer where done by a guy that doesn't do taxidermist anymore

  22. go to this site and read posts and threads daily to learn how NY's Andrew Cuomo will relieve you of all your firearms over time while you sleep. There are organized groups in our state that will stop nothing short of having you hunt with a peashooter. So instead of checking in at your convenience get involved and educated on this important issue before someone knocks on your door asking for your firearms. http://www.nyfirearms.com/forums/

  23. I sure like the way they look, especially if you do them fresh. The skull ends up really white and the antlers keep their color. Thanks Wooly- an evil voice in my head keeps trying to talk me into messing with some of my white sheds...

  25. Cool stuff!! My Dad and I save all our antlers & skull plates. We have the local butcher give us the skull plate/antlers back with as little guts/hair as possible. Then my Dad boils them in a big pot and scrapes off anything remaining. I might look into this "Buck Boiler" as a father's day present.
