That is true. I had an old Mk V 24" in 300 Roy. You could light a cigar with the flame that ripped out of that rifle. There was no doubt that its recoil was harsh, but no worse than a 300 Win Mag which has less chamber pressure due to on a single radius on the shoulder of the cartridge as compared to the Weatherby loading which is doubled (much sharper shoulder 90 degree vs 45 degree). But the design of the Mk V stock made the barrel lift more than shove back. Both of the 7mm Rem Mags I had were Ruger 77's. Pretty much a straight line from the bolt face to the meat of the shooter's shoulder. Definitely hits hard and fast in the Ruger style stock design. There is an article and table that Chuck Hawks has about recoil. It says that stout slow recoil isn't perceived to be as hard as fast snappy recoil. Basically the speed of the recoil is what people perceive to be more violent (link below). If you think about it, it does make sense. A 35 Whelen gives a good shove back, where as a 300 Win Mag has about as much recoil force but comes back faster. More people would describe the recoil of the 300 Mag as worse, but its only because of the speed of the recoil, the energy is about the same. I've shot a friends 338 Win Mag, and a 300 RUM and I can attest to the fact that they aren't pulled in tight you will need to see a dentist with the "violence" coming through the top line of the stocks. Those are both Model 700's and the weights on the heads are of this are 225 gr and 180 gr respectively. He hands ag properties in Cherry Valley, takes far shots with confidence in doing so because both rounds in his mind carry the mail that he needs to 300 yrs plus. I can't say because I've never hunted with him, only shot at th range. But he has the pics in his phone and taxidermy bills to make one believe him. I have also shot 338 Lapua a few times in LE configured bolt actions. Heavy rifles and in lead sleds when I tried them, I have video of a muzzle rise in one..... WOW!!!! The 7mm that this all started around isn't the worst thing in the world, but if its gonna be mostly to hunt deer in the northeast there are more reasonable and comfortable choices for hunters. In my own experience, if 7mm rifles I had by design did a better job with recoil I'd likely still own them today. http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

Finally pulled the trigger on a "pocket" gun
eagle rider replied to ApexerER's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
we are authorized the Glock 43 or the LCP..... no Bodyguards. They can be flaky on the first squeeze. There is a document account where a Texas Trooper off duty buying food at a gas station in Galveston found himself in the middle of a robbery. He pulled a Bodyguard out of his pocket tried to stop the robbery, it turned into a firefight. His first round was a misfire, he was able to duck behind a display, clear the misfire, re-engage and kill the misunderstood college dropout. Video in the store cleared the cop, and the clerk backed the story.... so no harm, no foul. When the Texas State CSU team checked the gun all seemed okay, the cleared round had a very light strike on the primer. They subsequently fired the round later that day in the same gun it misfired in. There are other accounts out there like that. I carry an LCP in my pocket at all times!!!! -
I don't have a love affair with Rage heads but they do work well on deer. The farthest I've had to look for one even with a not so great hit was 60 yards. The price is high on them though. I prob only go through two a season so its not like it's hundreds of dollars. Honestly a quality box of ammo is just as much. It's how things are nowadays. I tried Steelforce, and Magnus. Admittedly my sharpening skills weren't there and they both wind plane a lot. I've lost well hit deer on Thunderhead 100's so I'm over them big time. As far as Muzzy's go, I get a really flyer every one and a agin and the Phantom was trash so I've kinda been sour on them as well. As far as other expanding heads go, the NAP's aren't that impressive to me. I never shot the Reapers, the Montec's, or Meat Seekers. The Meat Seekers look wicked though as do some of the Rockets. The best fixed blade I ever used was the old Wasp Cam Locks and they stopped making them 20 years ago. I wouldn't be unwilling to try one of their expanding heads.

We've down south, shooting across bean fields, a lot of guys like the mags. Honestly all the times I hunted in S. Carolina it's been 30-06 and once 270 WSM. Which honestly performed no better or worse than the 30-06 did for me. I don't want to hijack the post, he should buy what he wants but when I owned 7mm Mag it was a round I really needed to teach myself to shoot well. Recoil was wicked. If you're gonna hunt deer and you need to own a magnum I'd look more towards the short mags. The only mag in my safe by way of a long gun is a 270 WSM. It's a Weatherby. It's very accurate and no worse in recoil the Weatherby than a lightweight 30-06 or a smidge more 308 would likely be. Hell I had a Remmy Mountain 700 lightweight 308 that you couldn't hang onto when you squeezed the trigger, had a couple of synthetic Browning A-Bolt II in 30-06 that were the same way. The added pounds adds a lot of stability.... There you go, get a 12 pound 7mm Rem Mag and it'll be a dream to shoot!

copper is killing me....

So here is a quick update. Went to the range today with the BAR, its grouping consistent and carries from 1" to .5" depending on how well I'm doing what I have to. The range was a bit crowded today so concentration was in short supply on my part. The bore fouled again, not as bad this time. #9'd it for a couple of hours and pushed two dry blue patches through. Using the Tetra again now, I mopped that goop in about an hour ago. I'll start scrubbing it through tonight. I'm letting it sit for a few hours more. -
This one is all Belgian (Mk I), The MKII's (around 77) where when they started to assemble in Portugal.

copper is killing me....

I was actually able to get the tip of an offset dental pick on it. I was steel to steel so I didn't apply any real pressure that would harm the rifling. The spot does not feel rough like a rusty spot would and it is white in color when I shine a bore light on it compared to the silvery black of the rest of the inside of the bore. I have no clue what it is. The accuracy on the rifle is awesome. I don't think its pitting. Maybe a tool mark from 1968 when the rifling was cut? Whatever it is it seems to be part of the steel. I don't know how else to explain it, but I don't think there is any copper on that spot or in the barrel elsewhere. I pulled on the spot with the pick inside the groove and on the lands side of it as well. The spot is both in the groove and up on the land. I am totally baffled. After I was done I solvent cleaned, dried and oiled the bore again. Any ideas on this???? -

still got one spot that I just can't get out on a single spot in the barrel. Gonna try some 0000 steel wool on a bore mop with copper solvent. Its a small spot right under the front sight. Getting desperate. -

update and good news. As far as I can tell there is only one lands effected. About 1/8" long and deep looking copper. Douched it up again and nylon brushed it in. Hopefully It will come out when I start running patches down in about two hours or so. -

I called Barnes today, they said their Vortex TTSX isn't a problem, its hard as nails. Their old X bullet was an issue because it was way softer. They said likely there was copper deposits deeper in the barrel and that the hard body of the TTSX dragged it up through the lands. Anyway I've been three days with the Tetra and I still can't get all of it. I've gooed up a bore mop and got my basement smelling like a meyth lab! Went through a whole bag of 30 cal patches. I might try Sweets, it has a higher ammonia content, the guy at Barnes recommended it. -
The Loggy is a Predator, It was in the woods for one season then we took it out. The Millennium is an M50, was never in the woods. The Cougar Claw is a Cub Climber. The Woods and Water I believe is a Model 20 XL climber. It was never used. Steps are Ameristep Grizzly.
-
I can get them for you.
-
i would. But they are the majority of the cost in the whole thing.
-
Got four stands for sale. two climbers, and two lock on's. The climbers are a Woods & Water and a Cougar Claw. Both in good shape. The lock on's are a Loggy Bayou and a Millennium (never been used). The Millennium has and extra bracket. Have also about 8 or 10 Ameristep screw in steps. I don't need them. I use Summits when I climb. I'd like $225 for all of it. The Millennium is worth much that alone. I'm in 1C and can get you pics later on. I'm not climbing into my garage rafters right now. Let me know.

Thanks, he was a great guy,.... but we'd have to add to that video him teaching a kid to play poker and read a racing form..... LOL. He liked his cards and loved his ponies. Somehow he always came back from the hunting club with more cash than he had when he went. Anyways.... I spent a lot of time with him as a kid. Tough as nails with a big heart, he'd crawl across broken glass for someone he loved. He had a great life story, came up from nothing, he was the oldest kid raising his two sisters. They were orphans by the time he was 11 living in the north Bronx in a church basement. A NYPD Sgt. took them in with his wife and raised them as their own, they weren't able to have children. When he was 20 (just back from the Navy) he took the NYPD test and was hired that year. Made Sgt after 5 yrs, then Lt. 3 yrs later in the Mounted detail where he spent 11 years total. Somehow got a detectives shield after that. I don't recall the rest of the path but his last 5 years he was Dep Inspector. He retired just short 30 years. He died two days after my son was born in 1996. Exactly a year and a half after my grandmother died. They were married for 65 years.

No problems at all with other stuff,... I don't get it maybe it was just a bad lot???? Either way getting the copper out isn't easy.
